For a 39 inch long replica of an americas cup the Kyosho Seawinds is about $300 for the boat, 50-60 for a radio and a quarter scale servo for a sail winch.

For a double masted schooner similar to the one in the other post the closest kit is a Robbie Valdivia. Probably $1500 or more. And isn't nearly as fun to sail as a Seawinds.

    Do they sail easily/well?

I'd think scaling down a real ship would have odd results since the smaller you get the fabric gets disproportionally thick and less flexible than compared to the real thing.

The Seawinds sails great. The double masted scooner gets blown over easier so you have to be carful with wind. I also have a Kyosho Fairwinds that looks like a 40 foot cabin sailer that has a prop so if the wind stops blowing I can motor around.:rofl

The sail is a very light material. Some of the race boats use mylar sails not much thicker than paper.

    Ah, makes sense.

So whattaya do if you get it out to the middle of the lake and the wind stops blowing?

Wait till the wind starts again or swim. Or if I am with the club someone has a power boat and will push it back.

I'm thinking, that it wouldn't be too hard to build something fun-scale without breaking the bank... balsawood/foam hull, maybe a nice thin veneer wood on it, and the radio stuff... and you're on the water. As long as you know how to shape a hull.

How much weight is in that model Seawinds keel?

Its solid lead about 1 1/4 round, probably 5 inches long. From a parts supplier.

    "Usually weighs 1425-1435 grams"

    Heres a list of suppliers.

Here's a vid of my Electric 48" Ohio Combat RC Wing. It covers the building process and its first flight. It will do over 100mph in level flight and has a very wicked sound.

If you just want to see the flight and not the build you can skip to the end of the vid.
