I'm a bit late catching up with your trip... I'm on the east coast, near Tauranga. I imagine you'll be on a more direct route back to Auckland, but if you do end up with some time I'd like to buy you a coffee, even on the road somewhere through the Waikato.

Are you going up through the Catlins? The East side of the South Island is one of the last areas to get a feel for the way NZ was back in the early part of the 20th century. There are some beautiful waterfalls there, if you have time to see them.

Depending on how tired you want your arms to be, the Port Underwood Road from Rarangi to Picton is quite the drive. Lots of great scenic vistas and views of mussel farms. I don't know if the Mussel Pot restaurant in Havelock is still there, but it was good back when.

On the North Island, the 309 Road in the Coromandel area is a great ride, too.

I'm loving the RR. Keep it up!

More front page material from this ride report! I am just to the part of the trip where you guys are riding the salar in Bolivia. I must say all the photos are excellent and from a distance the salt looks like water to me. All of the ones where you walk away from the bike and look real small are awesome. The one I vote for front page material is the ADV sign you and Mike made...absolutely fantastic!

After such great weather in both Milford and Doubtful sound.... I am getting used to it! But it is fall and the mornings are crisp and reaching into the 30's F some mornings. But quickly warming up to 50-70's.

As I ride the road south, the farms open up. Have seen lots of Deer Farms. We have them in the woods, and in NZ they raise them in the farms. I keep thinking they will jump over the fences and head into the road, but they do not :deal

What has been great about riding the roads in NZ is the lack of much traffic as I ride the rural roads! :clap

The road soon follows the coastline.

Always nice to smell the sea breeze, feel the sunshine and enjoy the peacefulness of the place!

The blue sky, Green fields sometimes dotted with Sheep, bluish Ocean. Really great!

I arrive early afternoon to Invercargill. First stop E Hayes and Company Hardware.

One of my very favorite Movies. "worlds Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins.

They have his original bikes, and parts on Display, as well as many other bikes and a few cars.

Loved this wall from his shop, and from the movie.

Also had to take a quick ride out to the Oreti Beach..... Where he tested his bikes for speed.

He would have been speeding down this beach. Very cool!

And then I met up with Scott (chekamus) Adv who invited me to stay. They are british, and recent arrivals to stay in NZ. I was able to load my GS -911 software on his computer and connect it to the bike, with Scotts help.

GS-911 is really cool as it gets you access to all the computer data for the bike.

So it has to do with a fuse of the fuel pump..... Talked with Sebastian up at Experience BMW. And he was really helpful. Next job is to pull the fuel pump and check to see if the filter is still attached...

Thanks Scott and Kate for a nice evening of travel, motorcycle and life conversations. Good Luck on you new life in NZ!! :wave

    Chasing the Sun

I was planning on going to Stuart Island, but the rain was coming in for the weekend, and so I decided to continue to follow the sun! Headed East to explore the Caitlins Reserve on my way to Dunedin.

Even had a herd of cattle to sit through as they passed down the rural road!

    Right along the coastal road.

    Some beautiful bays.

With some sweeping views of the ocean....

Some gravel roads as I explore the area

Perfect day for riding!! The colors were vivid and contrasting!

I found the very southern point of the south Island

Just enjoyed the ride along the coast.

Great roads, and scenery in the Caitlins

    Including Nugget Point and Lighthouse

Looking down. See the little Zodiac??

As I rolled along the hwy heading toward Dunedin........ Just finished passing a bunch of RV's and Car in a passing lane, then :huh

Appears that I was tooling along a bit fast.... and I now will be paying an Unwanted Donation to the Dudedin tax reserves :evil

I had chuckled to myself that I show break out the "No Smoking English" in my best broken spanish and see what happens... :lol3 Then I thought better as I might end up in jail.

My Policeman was very nice, but no chance in not writing the ticket. This was my first ticket in 18 months on the road, some 55,000 miles or so.... Since my last performance award. :deal Bummer.... But not unwarranted .

He told me it was Friday of a Holiday weekend.... :huh Oh well, on to Dunedin.
Cool town. Had a evening checking out downtown. My room with a view.

Had dinner in an Irish pub.

and Stayed at the Hogwartz Hostel.

Another great day, sun was out, nice rural roads with lots of twists and turns! Great scenery! Just following the Sun!

Are you going to pay the ticket or just let is go? I guess that it would depend on long they gave you to take care of the citation and when you plan on leaving NZ. I don't think that NZ would extradite you from the USA. :lol3 :eek1

Tell us more about how much over the speed limit etc.

I got stopped in BC Canada once for about 15 K over the limit and the female RCMP let me go with a verbal tongue lashing. She was pretty nice about it since I was in a very desolate area.

From Dunedin I rode north. Always choices on the way, as I wanted to go back into the mountains, but with my fuel pump issues, decided to play it safe and get to Christchurch. Pull the fuel pump, check the filter and see if that was it, and know there is a dealer if I have any issues.

Was 250Km ride. Nice sunny day! and passed the 45 degree South Altitude

As I rode into Christchurch.... This sign caught my eye. A communist who used Violence in South America to secure Fidel as leader of cuba is now selling Hamburgers in Christchurch. :lol3

I ended up staying at the Jailhouse :evil sort of Appropriate after yesterday :lol3

Then Met up with Arnout again! Had a nice dinner in Christchurch as we shared more travel stories. He is flying to Asia later this week, and I am continuing onto Australia..... Who knows where we might meet again!

    Safe Travels my Friend!

And we walked around Christchurch. Amazing two years after the 7.1 Earthquake that a huge part of downtown is still the fenced off "red Zone" where 80% of the major building have to come down. Huge Huge amount of work. Sad to walk through and see so much work to do.

So much area all sealed off as they continue to tear down and rebuild.

And a shopping and eating area all set up with Containers.

Using containers to shore up old facades

    Old and new condemned

This art represents the 185 people who lost there lives that fateful day.

    Poem on loss and grief

Adios Arnout .... Until we meet again!

..... Ride Arthurs pass tomorrow. Then continuing back north to catch a ferry back to the north island. Time is going too fast ....

as I finish this thread after 3 weeks of on and off reading as much as I can. I am glad to see that so many people have followed your adventures. It is truly amazing to hear the generosity across the globe.

One day we all hope to be able to have an adventure like you are achieving.

Keep up the postings I hope you have many many more areas that you discover and share with the rest of us. cheers

I think there's a motorcycle in here somewhere :lol3. Glad you're having such a good time down over and under. I feel the same way when I pay a ticket...... hope it goes somewhere good. Saw a lot of glorification of Che when I lived in Europe, never understood it. Loved the Motorcycle Diaries but in the spirit of comradeship, he did a lot of very bad things. Peace be with you hermano !
