Spring has finally sprung here in the Midwest, so I figured it was time for a weekend motorcycle ride to shake off the winter blues.

I headed south from Indy Thursday around noon, and arrived Dickson, TN about 5 hours later. The ride was kinda cold, and I developed the uncontrollable biker shakes north of Nashville, so I stopped and warmed up with the hand blow dryer in the rest area restroom. Took about 12 cycles to finally stopped shivering. :lol3

Here's my bike at the Motel.

Next morning I headed to Loretta Lynn's Ranch to check out the MTDR (Middle Tennessee Dirt Riders) Spring Ride 2011. :clap
    [IMG]

I got registered and sound checked, and headed for the trails.

The main trail is more for dirt bikes then it is for heavy dualsport bikes, so I did the Novice Trail, being led by one of the great guys from the MTDR. Thanks again, Joe! The trail was a blast at 3.4 miles, with tons of features and obstacles like berms and jumps. Just right for the KLR!

I rode the fire roads to check out portions of the main trail.

Thanks ClearwaterBMW. I will be posting the Natchez Trace pics today, and while I may not have any pics of BMW's on this ride report, I must have seen 2 dozen BMW's while riding the Trace. From old classics to new bikes, street and dualsport models. Always a wave and a nod from passing BMW riders. :freaky

Thanks imjinscout. That is really why I am doing this ride report. When I was trip planning, I didn't see a lot of information about the area for dualsport riders, so I decided then and there that I would share all I could about what I learned while riding the area.

The new KLR's do look pretty when all shined up. Course mine never stays that way for long!

Thank you all for the nice comments, please keep em comin! Questions and comments add greatly to a ride report, and all are appreciated!

Finishing up a great day on the Ranch.

After a tough year of decision making at work, these are the type of decisions that are good for the soul. (I explored them both).

There were no bad decisions. :D

    My home for 3 nights.

Saturday morning I was off to ride the nearby Natchez Trace Parkway. And what a glorious spring day it was to ride!

No trip to the Trace would be complete without a visit to the Loveless Cafe. :deal

    Let's do this!

Thanks Kodiakman. Glad to share. The whole weekend was a blast. I definately shook off every bit of winter blues on this ride. I am planning on revisiting these areas this summer and again in the fall to see the differences the green and multicolored foliage make. :ear

Thanks Kenny. As you know, the wear indicators on my rear tire started to show on the ride back to Indy. Not good on a Sunday evening with 300 miles to ride, but made it home fine. Thanks for ordering the set of Shinko 705's for me. Looking forward to the Tech Day next week to mount them up at Redbird Station, and then take em for a test ride at Redbird SRA! :clap

Thanks MBABC. I have been amazed this year at how good the dualsport riding is in your neck of the woods. I checked out Mammoth Caves National Park (above ground) and Land Between the Lakes earlier this year in the car as a shakedown run , and started making plans right away for a weekend motorcycle getaway adventure. So close, and yet so awesome!

Thanks ihatefalling. IMHO the Land Between the Lakes, including Turkey Bay OHV park is the one of the best kept secrets in the midwest. An easy 5 hour ride from Indy to arrive in a dualsport paradise? That's a no brainer for me. I will visit many more times through the coming years. :clap

Thanks Tim. I had actually planned on riding the main trail at Loretta Lynn's Ranch the whole weekend. When I arrived at the trailhead, Joe with the MTDR advised against it because the trail was pretty greasy in spots. They said it wasn't from rain per se, more like permafrost melting up from the ground. Even the lighter dirtbikes where having trouble on some of the long hillclimbs. So I did a few laps on the novice trail, which was more then a handful for the KLR with a bald Dunlop 750 on the back. I did get some mud on the bike there, but the rest of the ride was dry dirt roads and asphalt. Sorry :lol3

See ya at the tech day, Tim! I'm gonna clean Powerline Hill this time with my new Shinko 705's. :ear

You don't want to miss the possible carnage there!

The weather for this weekend edventure was absolutely gorgeous, and motorcycle riders where everywhere!

I stopped for lunch and socializing at Leiper's Fork.

And met a great guy, Don. It was a blast chatting with you and the other riders Don. The food was downhome southern and the conversation was even better! :freaky

My spot on the bench awaiting my return. :clap

Continuing down the Trace, there was a waterfall to check out.

It's not Niagra Falls by any stretch, but a great place to stretch the legs and digest some of that southern home cookin! :D

    A natural waterslide?

    I like trees with character.

Time to head back to the bike.
