Recommend a good two-up

    I have a girlfriend. More specifically, I have a girlfriend that likes riding with me.

    Currently I have a 2002 SV650S. It rides fine with me on it. She actually hasn't ridden with me yet on it, because its been in the shop since it got warm. But the front suspension sucks and the rear shock is a little saggy with me on it, even adjusted all the way up.

    The only difficult problem of this equation is that I'm about 250 and shes about 150. Which seems to be a lot to put on a stock suspensioned SV650.

    While waiting on my bike to be returned, we've been out a few times on my buddy's 2011 GSX650F, which is supremely comfortable for both of us. While it doesn't have an excess of power it is adequate, since we're not slamming through twisties at 3 gees.

    So my request to the inmates is, recommend a solid road bike for the stated weight that I can find used around four grand. I have been looking for a GSXF but they're a little hard to find.

    I've never done any real shopping for a good two-up machine so help a guy out

    Vstrom and Bandit come to my mind. The 650 strom will preform similar to your sv, but a hell of a lot more comfortable, especially 2-up. Add thq 1000 strom or a 1200-1250 bandit..

    Any BMW Oilhead R1000, R1150 or R1200RT if you are mechanically inclined.

    A Honda ST1100 or ST 1300 for boring reliability if you are not mechanical.

    A Yam VFR and a Kawi Concours are good choices too.

    Research whichever bike you are choosing as different years of different models had some issues whereas other years are very highly regarded.

    VFR heat and valve issues and ST1100 alternators come to mind.

    Bandit 1200-1250 is a good do it all street bike and you get a lot bike for your money.
    Sadly many bikes could use better suspension, especially for two ups.
    I have changed the front springs on my ZX14 because the where on the soft side, the rear is ok for me but i ride solo. But those on ZX14 that rides a lot two up has changed rear suspension.

    Strom 1000 is pretty hard to beat for 2-up. The physical size of the bike really gives a lot of passenger room. Strom 1K seat is also very nice for a stock unit and the grab rails are nicely placed. It makes a very comfortable tourer that can still handle twisties. Look for a new body style DL1000. They have better windshield options and a few minor kinks worked out of them. I picked up a 2005 with 55K miles on it a couple years ago for $3300. Only negative to the strom is that it lacks a bit of stability at high speed cornering limits. You just have to pay attention and make more small corrections than a sportbike like the SV. Twisties at lower speed are a snap due to the wide bars.

    The DL1K has two common issues, clutch shudder is the first. It happens right around 3-3.5K rpms. Its more just annoying that a huge problem. Other than the first year DL1K they have never caused reliability issues. If its there, you should decided if you can live with it. Or you can have the clutch reworked by a couple of dudes in the aftermarket for a couple hundred bucks I think. Most people just live with it. Its no worse than a dry clutch Ducati.

    The second is lean fuelling at the same RPMs. It can cause backfiring and stumbling. Ask the PO if they had the FI tuned to eliminate this. It can be done with the stock computer by using a tuning box or it can be done with something like a power commander.

    Bandit 12/1250, mine was a bit thirsty, and made my fingers numb when cruising at steady motorway speeds, but otherwise, faultless. Even I could wheelie it!

    ........ and carefully consider how much money you have to spend. Also take a good look at style, service-ability and performance required. There's literally thousands of good options, until ya start looking closer at what ya really want in a motorcycle.

    Example: I'm very pleased with my Ducati GT-1000. My weight was up around 240 @ 6'-1" when I bought it, and my favorite female passenger is around 115 @ 5'-3". The ride is quite comfy for us both, and the engine's very strong torque hardly notices when she's riding along. My choice may not be a choice to be considered by you, for many reasons. But 'Lil Miss Duckie suits me just fine. Look around a bit, and see what tickles yer fancy - and her's, too!

    Any of the big metric vtwin bikes. Vulcan 1500/1600, Roadliner/Stratoliner, VTX1300/1800, and the 90 inch Suzuki's (C and M 90) can all be bought on a deal at 4k.

    A Harley Dyna chassis in a Superglide or FXR. Occasionally, you will see an older V-rod in that price range too.

    A Vstrom 1000 and all the other sport touring machines mentioned.

    An ST1100 isn't a bad choice to consider at all. They wear like iron and have a big aftermarket for suspension parts.

    4 grand can buy you a lot of bike right now, if you shop around and narrow what you're looking for in terms of style or any brand bias you might have.

    I would second this. We've been doing quite a bit of 2up riding on my 2006 Vstrom 1k and it works very well. We've test ridden many bikes together and for the money it's hard to beat the Vee.

    I'm ~200lbs she's ~115lbs. The stock suspension handles it no problem. The rear shock has a hand preload knob so it's easy to crank in a little extra preload for when she's on the back.

    Fueling is easy to fix with a Power Commander and there are a lot of maps available from the community. Once it's properly remapped it runs like a dream, pulling smooth from 2,500 rpm on up and they aren't slow.

    The brakes aren't modern powerful but they get the job done. I'd suggest SS braided lines and good pads.

    I think you need to decide what format you like, pure street/sport, touring, or ADV style. Something like an FJR1300 will do nicely also and when you remove the bags they are pretty sporty.

    Be happy your gal loves to ride with you and have her go along when you test ride your choices. A lot of bikes are not so comfy in the back with real high pegs or hard, poorly shaped, rear seating. Listen to her opinion on how the back feels so she will keep riding with you. Just keep her off the full boat luxo touring rigs with arm chair back seats or she'll be spoiled for life.

    True upright or sport touring machine. So this means, no cruisers does it also mean no touring bikes(i.e. Goldwing?).

    I've done some research but not nearly enough seat time on good two up bikes, that aren't what I'd call a land yacht. For the most part it's just a matter of how much of a trade off you are willing to make.

    Things to also consider though, seats, backrests and peg lowering kits can make a nice difference for a passenger. Look for bikes that have some/all of this sort of thing as it'll save you some coin in the long run. Some bikes it's a non-issue and it depends a lot on what each individual finds comfortable.

    I bought an R1100RS because many people found there SO's loved it for 2up riding, some even called the back seat a throne. My wifes back hurt so bad after 25 miles she could barely walk when she got off. I'm sure the suspension was shot, and stock seat, no back rest either.


    If you do the leg work, most say the bandit's are cramped for the pillion, shame as the 1250 sits a lot like an fjr1300 and I find it to have good ergo's at least at first impression.


    For big ST rigs, in trying to keep with your price range I'd look into a modded ST1100, if you can find an ST1300 in your price range that'd be a hell of a bike. Might find an FJR1300 in your range, I've read a lot of mixed reviews for passenger comfort there too. Connie's are cheap, and fairly similar in ergo's. I've got a Triumph Trophy now(old version) and I could see it being pretty decent 2up but after the R1100rs I've yet to talk her into getting back on a bike.

    More upright "non-st" bikes, V-Strom,(650 or 1000) get pretty good marks and actually have a little leg room due in part the there height. Definitely around in your price range too. GS's tend to hold there value and can be expensive for what you get, as much as I like bmw's I'm not sure I'll own another due to maint/repair costs this is something for each person to make up there mind on though. The Triumph Tiger is likely another option in this category, probably others I'm blanking on right now though, triple engine is pretty sweet.

    Are there any bikes out there that can handle that kind of load? Seriously? If you're Man Sized (200#+) wouldn't a big girl like that put you over the GVWR? I used to ride my 145# Girlfriend on the back of my R1150R and the bike felt sluggish, I couldn't imagine another 100#!!!

    It's hard to find more bang for the buck than an old C-10 Connie, they are solid as a rock, very comfy ergs, & whatever you could think to change or improve is available in the secondary market. Third party producers love bikes that stay around for 20+ years largly un changed.

    Love the VFR, perfect combo of sport/tour with Honda reliability & fit & finish thrown in for a bonus. I'm not sure that Honda throws them in on the Yam VFR (LOL)

    As for what's currently available, the Suzuki FA 1250 inherits the old Connie's mantle of "Most Bang for Buck". I've seen new bike leftovers for under $10.,000! That's amazing for a brand new,fully faired, 1250 cc, I-4, with full warranty.

    A Tiger 955i works great two up so long as the pilot has long legs as it is tall and a bit top heavy and they can be found for about $4K. They were marketed as ADV bikes but I consider mine more of a sport tourer w/ dirt road capability. From what I've heard many do not like the stock seat but I have a Corbin on mine and it is very comfortable for me and my GF...lots of power at all revs and the engine sounds amazing
