OK Dan, it's time for the dutch uncle, brother to brother talk, when I went down last year I had an epiphany of self actualization.

Simply put I'm NOT a young man anymore,I'm not as fast as I used to be, the ground hasn't gotten any softer, rocks hurt & big bore bikes are too much me to handle, but for me not to have a bike would be the same as a death certificate, I WILL RIDE till they put me in a body bag or a home,as long as I can swing a leg over there will be a bike under me, there's to much to see on the other side of the mountain or around the next curve, I can't give up now so I'll slow down smell the flowers take in sights & live in the moment.

So now lets get down to it, you & I are about the same age, I'm pushing 70, AZ Tom is pushing 73 & mefadv is up there too,& you,my friend are in good physical shape, still kickin it w/the young bucks, & still have a zest for life----YOU ain't dead yet, nor will you be anytime soon.

So lets give this some serious thought, Hows about you sell the widow maker, get healed up, and look into a smaller cc bike, 650 s seem to be the ideal in power & weight, I can see you on a BMW 700/800 GS with no problem, surely not the best bike in the world but does everything you ask of it from forest roads to tarmac

Guess the bottom line is I don't want to lose a ridden buddy who can dish it out & take it at the same time, plus there aren't many of us o'l farts out there any more & who else can I BS with Expo? Dammit, I just can't see you without a scooter.

    Remember "OLD GUYS RULE!!"

I hate to see you hang it up, but taking the risk we all take is a personal decision. If you do get a Jeep, don't take it personal when I flip you off on the trail ;)

Shame to see someone who enjoys riding with friends pack it in. I know from the many different types of riding I do that if it scares you to do it or your thinking about crashing it's time to pack it in... you do what is best for you mate as I would rather see you around the camp fire sometime than see you hurt.

    Cheers

I agree with this. When I flipped the Jeep I sold it bought motorcycles. I just felt safer off road on two wheels. Then about 2 years later I bought another Jeep (actually a 4runner) because I missed it. However I no longer wheel with the die hard "lets see if I can climb that" crowd, any off camber steep hill scares me and I'm tired of the crowd who says "oh come on, you can do that". Simply exploring the back country is more my speed. That applies to either off roading with the wife and dogs, or motorcycling.

Hey guys. I got the old man's back still. I'll just shove him in the co-pilot seat and we'll get into the swing of chasing for yaz-all in the BIGDOG mobile. You'll like those cold refreshments when were along.

Seriously I understand the difficult decision all to well when calling it quiets. As Belstaff said, the ground just doesn't get softer, and it takes a lot longer to heal when you hit the twilight years. Doesn't mean we have to stop playing. We just need to change the tools.
It was the hardest decision to decide to quiet riding after having to many crashs on the dirt. Then when my wife and I went down last Sept. on the tour bike, I thought it would all be fine. Even though Christy said that was it for her, I thought I would continue but without her or others to ride with it kind of takes the joy out. She still has physical and mental issues with the accident. I can't discount any of that so for now I choose to ride in comfort in a 4 wheeler and still get some fun time. Just need to get it going with all you hoodlums again somehow.
Maybe in a few weeks I'll host a Payson Weekend up here when Redeye is ready to get out and destroy some of his brain cells a little more.
I'll be seeing him on Monday after the surgery. I'm sure he will be here giving all of you a hard time with his old school harassment like he usually does.

I was a Dillons yesterday & saw your bike. Looks like it fared much better than you. A few bolt on shiney bits & it'll be as good as new.

Kinda looked sad, worried about it's injured rider....

Hey Dan I just heard the news. For a guy who has been riding as long as you I know deciding to give it up was not an easy decision. That is why we have all those good memories and pictures.....to get us through when the body just is not in the mood anymore. Just take it easy, your normal state mode :D, and heal up fast.

Dan had the plate put in his tibia down by the ankle today. That went well. He's not wearing a brace or that contraption that most people wear when they have a broken collar bone so that is good but he says it is broken pretty badly.
I helped him get in the house after his surgery was done. He'll be a computer racer for a while now. Probably try and find every motorsport he can find on the TV. He's going to be housebound for a while I think.
He's a tough ole coot that will be up and about before he's supposed to like most of us would.
I'm sure he'll be on here soon.

Dan, Sorry to hear about this accident. You gonna sell the bike and get a quad instead? Just kidding man! If there is anything I can do let me know. If you need the bike transported for repairs or need parts brought up from the valley you got my number. In the meantime, here is a poem from Uncle Tim that should cheer you up:

    Ode to Flatlander

You drive from the Valley with all its concrete and glitter.
You drive 100 miles just to deposit your litter.
Stirring up dust on your quads do you race,
And of our forest you leave not a trace.
Through the woods you will go stomping and stamping,
In a 200-foot trailer you call it camping.
Of Jeremiah Johnson your dreams they inspire,
But when you get lost you light a signal fire.
If just once I could see a little gratitude,
Why must you bring your bad attitude?
Like the gates at a derby they will all start,
In a mindless mayhem to shop at Wal-Mart.
