A friend is heading up towards Santa Cruz in a few weeks and wants to do some camping along the coast or maybe up in the coastal hills/mountains between Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz/Watsonville. Being that their planning is a little late, they need no reservation camps but need to be able to access with a car, not 4x4/offroad capable.

    Any advice?

I have already mentioned Kirk Creek, since it's one of my favorites. Also mentioned Limekiln already. Both of these suggest, but don't require reservations.

Nacimiento Fergusson Road has some other primitive camping options and great views. I have seen a volvo up there before.

Andrew Molera state park is first come first serve. The campsites are hike in, but only about 500 feet from the parking area.

A couple I just met said they stayed in a first come first served just south of San Simeon. San Simeon S.P. Washburn loop. Pit shitters. Water faucet. No showers. Said the place was EMPTY!

He might try, if he has an iphone, the Campwhere App. It has a fairly comprehensive list of public (not privately owned) CGs, addresses w/contact phone numbers. To me it looks to be a pretty cool app & looks like a nice way to wander around and then in the afternoon look for the evenings destination.
At this time I haven't used it on the road but that will change in a couple weeks when I head north looking for starbucks and campgrounds.

I've had the app for quite a while. Works in California, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore via iTunes. That said, if one goes to the iTunes App Store and just search for "campground", about 100 similar apps show up.:deal

    It's a good idea.
