Remote positive lead

    Hi All,

    I am not sure what to call it. On my GS1150R Adventure there is a 'remote positive lead' so that I could jump start the battery with out removing the tank to get at the positive lead on the battery. Does someone make them for my F800GS and if so where could I pick one up.

    I just asked the service advisor at my local BMW shop what guage wire I should use to make a set of jumper cables to carry on my F650GS Twin [​IMG]. He recommended I use 8 gauge stranded copper wire. Just make a short run from the battery to a remote positive lead location on your 650/800 Twins (location TBD), as well as actual jumper cables if you want. Should be pretty easy/cheap to build/insulate too. Have Fun!![​IMG]

    I have not looked, but it might be possible to construct the remote lead to work from the postive terminal of the starter relay which is a little easier to get to than the battery terminals ......

    I would pay close attention to how you route the wire. A dead short in 8 gauge would probably sizzle long enough to start a fire. GH

    It's dangerous to jump motorcycle batteries. A car battery with Jumper cables can supplies a whole lot of current. If your bike battery was shorted out, hit it with this current and you could Smoke Test the bike battery (Physically blow it up).

    If it was me (and I have had to do this on my ATV when the battery failed) I would use the SAE connector that I installed to charge your battery. Don't jump start it, but charge the battery over this wire. It don't take long to put enough charge into a bike battery to start a bike.

    In theory you could even build an an SAE cable with you that could run from your buddies SAE connector to your bike so his bike charges yours.

    I was thinking of making an adapter as you describe ... Gerbing or SAE on one end with clips on the other, and not use to actually START the dead bike just to charge it.

    I'm wondering what the maximum current this type adapter might see in the worst case ... i.e totally flat battery in one bike and 14V on the other bike, most of the SAE/Gerbings I have seen are fused @ 15A ... I wonder if that is enough to carry it?

    BTW, it's perfectly acceptable to jump-start a bike from another bike, and even from a car as long as the other vehicle isn't running at the time. Just don't accidentally touch any metal parts on the bike with the positive lead from the other battery.

    I use a battery tender plus... i comes with a battery whip (sae connector) a whip with a alligator clip adapter and a charger.... sweet!
