The abandoned ranch with the red cabin and stream crossing just north of Battle Mountain was on the TAT, but that was the only location I recognized as definitely being on the TAT.

When we did the TAT, we routed over Hinky Pass based on a suggestion by, I think, Docking Pilot as a short "alternate route" for the section near Paradise Valley. We didn't have time to go back and compare the official TAT route, but Hinky Pass is definitely worth going over.

Thanks for reading the report. There is some beautiful country down there!

Hinkey Pass is definitely cool. That, climbing Beatys Butte, and the area around Jarbidge are some of my coolest memories of the 2012 trip.

I sent a message to the TAT guy before we left but he never got back to me. I think we might have been on it the first day from Denio Junction to at least where we passed that cabin. I imagine some of that 2023 road would be a handful on a bigger bike. Some of the group was a bit worried about the loose rocky grade when we were on our way back to DJ. It turned out to be no big deal even tho we were all spent and hauling butt straight into the sun. We were trying to crest that last range before the sun set after having to get creative with the route because of some fences across the road (twice).

We might have been on or close to the TAT further all the way to the Zimmerman Ranch too. The woman at Zimmerman Ranch told me there were often bikes that came past her ranch headed westbound but that we were the first she had ever seen going eastbound. There was a guy who showed up at Denio Junction who was riding the TAT when we were there in 2011. I think Denio Junction is a fuel spot on the TAT. I have never seen the actual route so don't know.

    Hi Remarksman,

I am not sure which abandoned ranch you are talking about but we were not near Battle Mountain. We were way up near the Oregon / Idaho / Nevada border while crossing the Owyhee desert in 2012.

I kind of assumed you were talking about this cabin when I responded above:

I think the we might have been on the TAT from Denio Junction to just past this cabin on the first day. But we might have been on it further judging by the Zimmerman Ranch owner's comments to me.

I have had some time to fool around with the videos I made on the trip since I smashed my foot trail riding last week. Here is the first one. It is the trail up to a viewpoint just outside of Denio Junction off of Wilder Creek Road.

I am still trying to sort out how to embed the video so bear with me... :huh

Thank you for the kind words. :D

We really enjoyed ourselves out there and plan to get out and do some more in the future.

Get yourself a Benchmark and plot a course thru the desert. It is fantastic!! So much to see!

I still have some more vidoes left to edit and post. I hope you like them!

Here is a quick panorama from just slightly north of Hicks Mountain. It was a bit breezy up there but absolutely beautiful. One of those long climbs up a hill that ends with topping out over the saddle to an amazing landscape.

    Enjoy!

Coon Creek Pass and the climb to Deer Mountain outside of Jarbidge, NV. What an absolutely fabulous area to ride!! I cannot wait to go back. So much to explore and discover. :D

    Another video.

This is part of crossing the Owyhee Desert headed westbound. I had a close encounter with a pair of antelope.

The water crossing was easy in 2012. Here is what it looked like in 2011.

Hinkey Pass is amazing. A quick twisty gravel road through some amazing rocks. :clap

Then on to Oregon with a bit of Domingo Pass and Beatys Butte. This was a real blast too. A steep climb up a rough rutted 2 track straight up the side of the highest thing around right to the top. Probably not the best thing to ride a big bike on but a real blast on a thumper! :D I lost the track near the top and dropped my bike trying to find it. I decided to just leave it there and hike the rest of the way to the summit. It did not look too far away. I was winded when I finally made it to the top. Speaking of wind, it was windy up there!

Hinkey Pass, NV pan, Domingo Pass, OR and Beatys Butte, OR.

I'm dying to know where this pic was taken: [IMG]

And is that somewhere that could be accessed two-up on a beast of a bike like a BMW F800GS?

It is on a side road taking off from a pass between Jarbidge and Charleston, Nevada. It think the top is called Deer Mountain. I don't have a map here in front of me to look at. There is a video of the climb up a few posts before this one.

The road between Jarbidge and Charleston is definitely one you can do on that bike. That last climb to the summit was a little loose and steep but you can do it. It is a beautiful area!

Thanks! I'm going to have to figure out how to shoehorn that into my upcoming trip. I've been watching this thread for a while and will finally have a chance to go exploring with my fiance.

I'll dig this one up from the archives. What a great area to ride. The RR in my sig line has some of the same areas you rode. Beaty's butte us a must ride if you're in the area. Looks like you missed Cavespring at the bottom of the butte. Way cool place to refill on water.

On another ride in that area, my cousin rode the trail west out of Shirk ranch towards Hart mtn. on his loaded F800GS after a very long day. The ride to the top was wicked difficult for him be he made it. He must have gotten bounced of the trail a half dozen times. We were trying to reach the hot springs to camp for the evening but by sunset were still too far away and way to tired to keep riding so we just stopped and pitched camp right in the middle of the rocky trail. Slept....like a rock.

Thought I'd give this a little bump back to the top!

I was just having a look at some of my old ride reports in preparation for a another trip starting from Jarbidge next Saturday.

Sure is fun to be reminded of what a great trip we had! :D

Hope the weather improves by then. Was just down there and the mountains were getting hit pretty hard. Rode from Montello to Jackpot and just got to Jpot minutes ahead of a nasty hail storm. The water crossing looks a little higher in the pic than it was last week. Most of the bad weather seems to be north of I-80 ----------dave
