Revs problem (990 adventure)

    Hi All,
    I decided to put this problem on this forum as the KTM UK forum has not given me an answer.
    Last time I have a problem with a crazy revs.
    I start the engine normally. The revs are about 2000 for w while and next goes down to about 1300-1500.
    Jump on the bike and start my ride. After a short while I see that if I press the clutch lever the revs were swimming in the range 3500-4000... so controlling the bike during a slow ride was very hard. I had to use a clutch... so I stopped and turned engine off and on... revs 3500-4000.... so tried again and revs back to normal but when started ride it went crazy again.

    This was happen first time about 1month ago when I was riding in the rain and cold day...
    A couple days later when I used a bike all was ok (good weather).

    Last time it happen again... rain and cold again.
    I don't know is this a problem during a rain (bad connection somewhere) or it is just coincidence.
    Bike has about 30000miles on the clock now... 2006year 990adventure.

    Just an update:
    I have found that I have a small leak (all is wet) under the left tank from under a fuel pump (I think it is a fuel pump)... But not sure has it got any connection to my problem with revs

    Sounds like a TPS issue.
    Dealer time

    Or you need someone with an electric meter (or TuneECU) to check out the adjustment of the Throttle Position Sensors on the throttle bodies.

    EDIT
    I bet it's water getting into the TPS wiring, maybe at the ECU under the headlight.

    Try bypassing the clutch switch. I had the same problem and it was a faulty clutch switch.

    I have found some stories in the Fuel Pump Issues topic and maybe the faulty fuel pump cause this problems... Someone there wrote that the high revs or very low revs has been caused by fuel pump when the fuel level in tank was low..and that how it is on mine now. I have to refuel it and check.

    TPS -- Check and set this between .54 and .6 ( when engine is warm ).

    Do you mean I have to use TuneEcu software ? sorry but I don't know anything about this so if you can provide some more details.

    Ok, I have a question. My 990 started cutting out around 6K rpms. Bike acts like I cut the fuel switch once it hits 6K. Should I start with the TPS also?

    Not sure if this applies to your problem,
    but one of my 990's has a high rev issue similar to yours
    and while I have not found a resolution to it, I have narrowed it down.
    It seems that the idle stepper motor is causing the over rev.
    When I start the bike it jumps to 3500 + - rpms and after a short time
    settles down to normal idle. But when the throttle is bliped it jumps back
    up and stays high again settles down.

    Clean your fuel pump filters.

    No need to buy new, remove them and swill about in a jar of fresh petrol, blow dry, swill again in clean petrol, blow dry, refit :)

    Smear the tank and O ring in silicon grease to aid fitting.

    Max- my 07 is now doing the exact same thing. Please post up if you find a solution (and what have you already ruled out?). I'm gonna check the clutch switch, see if that does it. I dropped some serious money last fall while the local dealer F'd w the (in spec!!) valves and basically stared at the bike for 3 wks. I noticed that I could turn the bike off and on multiple times and it would sometimes reset itself. Am I correct that you can't replace just the stepper motot--you need to replace the throttle bodies too?? This is bullshit!!!

    Sorry I don't have a link. I to replaced my stepper motor because idle speed was going everywhere from 1500rpm - 6000rpm while riding. The bike didn't slow down with the throttle closed
    Dealer told me the stepper motor could not be ordered separately so I had to by the entire FI system + work = 1300 euro
    With the help of this forum I found a second hand FI system took of the stepper motor and replaced it with mine. No adjustment or calibration necessary. After a while the problem reoccurred. I installed a new TPS and everything was fine again... for a while :baldy After al this I bypassed the clutch switch and the problem was solved, for many miles now :clap

    I doesn't effect economy but it will help rideability in the lower rpm's

    My 990 is doing the exact same thing and I bypassed the clutch switch and is still doing it. Any other suggestions on how to solve this problem that is driving me insane?

    Mine had a bad connection from RR to the battery, drove the ecu nuts. once replaced the solenoid conector, no longer did that.

    apparently the power available coming from the RR to the battery was fluctuating and it was caused by corroded connection.

    Once the solenoid was replaced, all went back to normal
