We've missed you and now is the best time to buy a bike. They are at their lowest this time of year and Christmas is only 21 days away. :ricky

Just to put you in the mood. :evil

Unfortunately, not on this occasion. Thanks to here a gate, there a gate, everywhere a gate gate, had just enough time to grab a quick lunch. Though did enjoy chatting with other guests at the Hutte.

Backing up... Mark of Outback Motortek USA East and a couple other folks wanted to check out the ghost towns of Thurmond and Nuttallburg in WV. Tom and I had been to those towns previously, but were game for another visit. The plan: Friday, meet at Mark's near Monroe VA. Saturday, stick "Thurmond" in the GPS, set the GPS to fastest route, along the way check out camping options/pitch tent, and get eats after or if in a pinch pull out the Jetboils. Sunday, maybe hit another ghost town, then head home. Basically, a plan so easy, no planning required.

I tell you what, navigating the back roads of WV in the winter can be quite the adventure in and of itself. The two campgrounds we checked out en route to Thurmond were closed. And gates on dirt and paved roads alike turned us around several times. By the time we figured out a route "likely" to get us to Thurmond, the decision was made to point wheels toward civilization to sort lodging. This was no loss, however, as we are talking about WV -- our explorations were naturally worthwhile.

As a last-ditch before heading to a hotel, we stopped by Adventures on the Gorge. Bingo! They had heated cabins available, but we chose to camp instead. Wish I could comment as to whether the showers were toasty warm, but alas I had prepared for primitive camping, which means I was not prepared to enjoy a shower, warm or otherwise. :doh Plenty of cut wood available for the campfire though. And 2 minutes' proximity from Country Thai restaurant, which is run by a Thai woman who LOVES motorcycles and serves up a prix fixe plate full of yummy and asks if you want more. Can't say enough good things about both AOTG and Country Thai.

Sunday after packing up and grabbing biscuits we beelined for Thurmond.

-- Edit: there is supposed to be a video here. I don't see the video here. Will put my head on it after a snooze. --

After touring the grounds, Mark and company turned for home, but I was all fired up and figured I could introduce Tom to Helvetia where we could grab lunch at the Hutte and still get back to Mark's by a respectable 5pm before heading home ourselves. Nice idea except the everywhere gates! Which made for more than double the dirt road fun but blew our eta out the window. When we finally made our way out of the maze (I was not about to give up, as I've been out there enough to know there had to be a way through, though apparently not enough to yet know the way through), we had a wee bit of time to make up. Which made for an abbreviated visit in Helvetia but a spirited ride back to Mark's. :ricky

Was a full and varied weekend. Couldn't have asked for better company, better scenery, or better riding conditions. Just perhaps a couple fewer gates. lol

Side note: how to cure a sinus bug -- stick helmet on head, ride interstate speeds in 50s, have a few adult beverages at the campfire, sleep outdoors in 30s. Next morning, ready to seize the day! YMMV. :D

I picked the bike up in WV, then went to look at the van in VA the next day. It's a pretty neat version of 4WD Vanagon with double sliding doors, the owner imported it from Belgium. Sadly too rusty under the shine for me. And pricey at 14k.

I'm thinking no earlier than 11, it's going to be cold an windy on Sunday. :vardy

I was trying to make some very obvious, but it was very dry and hard packed. Took me a while to confirm I was behind you guys on the one road. It looked like some of you were getting more spirited towards the end. Looks like you hit some of the Cumberland Forest and I know I went through Willis River road ahead of you, but I ride in a Leave No Trace manner in the park lands as to not give them any reason to ban motorcycles. There were a lot less hunters last weekend than a couple of weeks ago. I think it was too cold for some of them. I am surprised how many hunt directly from the road.

On my way home this evening I saw someone riding a TEX. Nice bike, amusing license plate.

Looks like Thurmond had their Christmas on.

For those who didn't know, this is where most of the movie Matewan was shot, and not in Matewan itself.

I'm just going to saw a few limbs so a particular log jump doesn't also have me trying to keep my eyes from being poked out.

Might also poke around a bit in a spot where I'd like to try and cut another trail.

Video upload, figured out. A couple bridge crossings and the like at Thurmond.

I like this one for seeing how video translates different aux lights. And hearing the different motor sounds.
