A buddy, Carl Parker, has regalled SabMag and DCCycles with some of his tales of riding through western China and Tibet.
Now, he's put some of it on a web site

The [political] difficulties of bike travel in China are legendary, once the sole domain of large, wealthy or sponsered groups, but lately she has become more forgiving & some folks are making it in "unofficially." I am planning to to try this summer to enter western China from the Stans with a locally purchased Ural. If I can get in with a bike or purchase one in Kashgar, I hope to take CH 219 to Tibet (not really allowed for tourists). Some westerners have been making it by hitching in trucks over the last few years. We'll see how it goes. I am banking that on a local bike I may stand a chance.

    Wish me Luck.

good luck with that. we have a more basic plan (and angling just before the olympics), of flying the bikes to HK, ride north to xian, back across to shanghi, up to beijing, then north to monglila, its not mich of a plan but its all we have until we go to the embassy and beg a lot
