I loaded up the KLR and headed south out of northern Colorado to trace the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, The Royal Road of the Interior Land. The Camino ran from Mexico City to Santa Fe for over 300 years bringing conquistadors, religion, merchants and culture to New Mexico long before the pilgrims landed. My plan was to start in El Paso and ride north, as the Spanish did, and end in Pueblo San Juan, just north of Santa Fe. Riding south, I visited ancient sites, which New Mexico is full of. First, Three Rivers Petroglyphs has over 20,000 rock carvings, around 1,000 years old.
