Gregg, I agree about the oil changing! we tried to keep it close to the ktm maintenance schedual which is every 15hrs. The new moter shares the engine and tranny oil so I really felt the need to keep up on it. We only changed the oil filter once in Loreto so changing oil wasnt too bad. I guess thats the price you pay for the high performance engines with small oil capacities!

Absolutely great RR! Some fantastic riding down in Baja, and so much to see off the beaten track. A little pig is on my list to ride those sections, fingers crossed that happens soon!

Thanks for posting all the road details and info, very informative. A great inspiration!

Thanks Krazygloo, I checked out your website, It kind of makes my ride report look a bit weak!! you guys do some cool stuff! I think this summer we plan to do the discovery route through oregon. This fall we will probably head back to Baja but ride all the way to Cabo and arrange to haul the bikes back on a trailer. This would give us a chance to travel lighter and enjoy the tight stuff better with a lighter bike.

    Great report mrdozer!
Really enjoyed it - loved your photos, especially the dog ones. :thumb
    You have a nice eye.

Hey, I think we did the "what the fuck were we thinking" trail, but in the opposite direction. :eek1
    Make rocks your favorite!

Haha, don't forget that Mr. Rockefeller also invented eggrolls, harleys, and air conditioning. :lol3

LittleWan, I've been following your RR and enjoying the hell out of it!! you are one tough cookie to ride on the back of a 990 through the stuff you guys are riding. If you did the "what the fuck were we thinking trail in reverse on a 990 your tougher than me!! I guess the storms really washed it out this year so its basically a river bed. Glad to see you guys met JD as well!! Keep up the good work on your RR:freaky

Thanks, mr D! :shog heh, stupid is as stupid does. :D

I'm working on the pics right now, they should bring back some good WTF memories for you! :evil
At the very least, we'll find out if that was the same trail.

I spoke to JD on 2 occasions, so I got to hear lots of stories! fun stuff.

Thanks for reading it Ceasar! and thanks for for 990 oil change line. Thats a great idea, saves hours of nonsense removing shroudes and tanks just to change the oil. I'm looking forward to checking out your bike!

    take care, Rich

Rich, this was an awesome ride report

It was also very expensive to read for me, as you already know

When I started in on this, I knew I had to "get me one". A KTM 500 EXC that is

I used a lot of your mod ideas and tips you sent me and that I found here. Bike is ready Wednesday. A public thanks to you for being generous with your knowledge and insights.

Now I aim to capture the Baja essence so well written in this ride report

    Rich,

If you plan to do the OBDR let me know. I can give you the intel. We have done sections 2,3,4,5. Maybe hookup for part if the schedule allows.

Way late to this one. I was still in Baja Sur when you did this report. I ran into Rocky and his crew last year while making a loop from Cabo to La Paz and back. Again, thanks for this great report. :clap

    Rich,

Planning on Jan 2014 for the small bikes. Did you save tracks of the ride?

Gonna have about 16 days from Bend.

You met Andy!!! One of the most interesting people I've ever met on moto trips, hands down. A fifteen minute group conversation with him and five of us was 98% him talking and us listing. The guy is entertaining for sure. We caught it all on video and laughed about it long afterwards. I was surprised that he created M & Ms (named after his sister, Marilyn Monroe, of course)!!!

GREAT RR and pics. Longing to venture south again!

I know I'm a year late to the party, but I just wanted to say that was a great RR. Interesting pics, just the right amount of detail and a good mix of human and canine fun. (You can really tell the animal lovers on this forum!)

As someone that is eying up a 500 EXC for next year and is quite interested in Baja, this report may have just sealed the deal for me.

    Well done!

Thanks CordR, the KTM 500 is really a nice bike. It does require more maintenance with oil changes because of the small oil capacity be its great for the tight trails. I think If I was going to ride more open stuff I might think about the 690.
