It's been a long dry spell I know,
    but ...
Stay tuned ............. more tomorrow, I'm on some kind of a roll...
Probably stale, moldy, and worm infested..... but a roll none the less.

Uploading pictures last night was a bit challenging of the 1200 baud dial-up connection ...
(Ok, it wasn't dial-up.... it just felt like it ....)
so I've compressed down some of the better pics, and ....obviously not in chronological order we have:

Nick being welcomed as a member of the WhereDaFukRWe tribe:

    WTF 2_comp.JPG

His "able" assistants chiming in with valuable advice:

    WTF I dont know_comp.JPG

    and... the eternal question ....
    Air up, or Air down?

Whatever it was I got was not your typical "Montezuma's revenge" or "tourista diarrhea" I, in all seriousness, have not been as sick as I was last week since I was 11 y/o
    and got pneumonia ...

As of this morning all systems are pretty much "go"....

I'll be leaving here soon to get back to some touring, but I am honestly going to miss the hotel staff here.
They treated me like family. Could they get me anything from the Farmicia?
They shared their meals with me, gave me run of the hotel kitchen and refrig. (the rooms don't have refrigerators).
They have all been really "genuine" folks. I hate to say I'm glad I got sick .... but had I not gotten sick, I'd have missed a lot of insight into rural Mexican culture,
and how awesome it is.... :clap

And now for a few gratuitous water crossing shots:

I might have come in a little "hot" on this one ... but did't want to run out of steam out in the middle,
So I erred on the side of "more shower" ...

Glad to see you are among the living, and back to posting. But 1200 baud is ok... I remember using a 110 baud cradle-style modem... how long would that have taken to upload a single image?

Good to hear you're getting a chance to see real life and having a great experience.
Don't get too caught up in having to keep us all updated. (Though I enjoy RRs immensely.)
I've seen several times on tour where guys were missing out on things because they were too worried about keeping up the blog. They didn't see it at the time, but then looking back it can become a regret. Keep on rolling and having a good time, in whatever form that takes for you.

Thanks guys I'll strike some happy medium between riding and blogging ...
I like the blogging as it's kinda like keeping a "journal" ;-)

    12Mpixel images ... had to go .... I squished them ;-)

    Meanwhile back at the ranch.............................

So having Gary settled in at Ponca City OK, awaiting the delivery of a working GPS
Jim is now ready to move on ...
He checks his watch, his calendar and his bike and thinks....
Hey .... as a result of this Horizons Unlimited conference I went to this past April
(highly recommended by the way ... go to one if you can: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events )
I stumble across this guy, Jim Foreman, that has organized a ride tour of Mexico that is going to commence from El Paso Tx on 10/01.
Well... my trip was supposed to get underway much earlier so I'd dismissed hooking up with Jim's group but ... seeing that things didn't exactly pan out the way I'd planned
I shot him an e-mail and he'd had a cancellation so ... he had room for me to join up with his group.

    Excellent ...

It now roughly 9/17, I need to be in El Paso 10/01 ... (this isn't a marathon challenge for me ... it's an extended and well-deserved vacation)
This means I can cross OK, get to CO meet my Novia (girlfriend for you gringos) and spend some quality time in Durango CO
(mgmw here on ADVRider by the way ... http://advrider.com/index.php?members/mgmw.400813/ )
get some gear issues sorted (more on that later) then blast south to El Paso TX and have a "qualified" expert help me with my first international border crossing ...
I love it when a plan comes together ... especially if it happens more or less spontaneously ... :ricky

yeah... so now I have to get across OK ... there was a comment earlier by another inmate about this "trial by fire".....

Oklahoma ................... where the wind comes sweeping down plain... really ....???
    you think I'm kidding?
Where ELSE do you see windsocks for MOTORISTS?
No, this was not a joke ....
I'd stop after an hour or so of riding because my neck hurt from having to be held upright aginst the wind....
Kinda like a NASCAR driver ... always turning LEFT.....

    OK ... Oklahoma................
yeah ... the wind sucks ... but at least you have some really boring roads....
"Alligator Alley" in Florida has NOTHING on you guys ....

    OK boring_comp.JPG

I work with the boredom by stopping at abandoned farms when the look interesting and poking around................

I have to say ... that if I wanted to get into the "reclaimed" lumber business there is some fine stuff in No Man's Land OK .....

    No mans land OK_comp.JPG

When I parked the bike to take this shot...
A park maint. guy came running over to tell me I couldn't park on the grass.
He had a shirt with his name embroidered on it ...
It said "Jesus" ... based on my extensive Spanish lessons (more on that later....)
I was pretty sure it should be pronouced "Hey-Seuss"
Using my best spanish (none too impressive, but you have to run with what you brung)
I used his name and said I just needed a picture ....
    He laughed and said ...
"Every gringo but you calls me "Christian Jesus" ... take all the pictures you want"
I snapped my shots and we talked for a bit ... I made a new friend.....
He was a nice guy ... poor SOB had a broken jaw that hadn't healed/been set correctly...
and I could tell he was self-conscious about it ...
I looked him in the eye and we talked for a while ... I told him of my quest ...
We shook hands and I was back on the road in "windsock" territory.....

So I have this great pal "JT"
    I love him like a brother ...
he and his dad like to rebuild old cars & in particular TRUCKs....
At the next farm I found a restoration candidate....
At the very least there's some crap in the carb.................
but JT and his dad have the shop and the skills..................

    OK truck_comp.JPG

    OK truck carb_comp.JPG

I'm really at kind of a loss to explain the "under the hood" condition of this truck....
    but ... hey ... JT ... if you're interested ...
I can tell you about where this restoration candidate is located ... :loco

    So ... long story short
(Ok... yes I know it's too freaking late for a "short' version of the story... but hey ... you signed up for this :ksteve )

    made it to NM_comp.JPG
I made it out of OK with most of my neurons still firing ... thank God for the abandoned farms....

Yeah... the duffle bag on top of the top case is typically much smaller....
right at this moment ... it's full of dirty laundry that I could be bothered to stuff into the panniers...

    I'll take one demerit ...

    Now...
To any Boy Scouts out there... you know that New Mexico holds a special place.
Philmont Scout Ranch ... 135,000 acres of the most pristine wilderness you've ever seen
(Boy Scouts don't leave empty frito bags on the trail....)

My son and i were there in 2011 ................
I'm an old Eagle Scout... he's also an Eagle scout and an awesome young man.
Philmont is awesome ... he and I being able to take a trek there together is easily
one of my top-10 life experiences....
and I don't think there's any chance it will get bumped out of the top-10 ... :super

and ... just like they do on the TV shows......................................

    "To be continued" .....

    I'm still not quite well...
    almost, but not quite....

it's time for a shot of good Mexican tequila,
    a shower,
    and a nice soft bed.

Good stuff! My kid (pending board of review) is an Eagle as well. We never made it to Philmont, sadly. Glad you updated the thread, we were all wondering, well at least me, when the untimely end happens.

Good to see you catching up and making progress!

OK blows. On my recent TAT trip I had the 110 degree temps and winds temporarily interrupted by those wonderful heavy thunderstorms that made riding off road impossible so I was forced to do the 60 degree angle getting blown from lane to lane deal on one long ass road day. I posted this on FB.
