In Holbrook AZ at a Burger King just because there are seats inside. I scored onion rings. They are bad for me but delish.

There's a few Tesla charging parking spots in this BK parking lot. Very cool.

My all pavement day was lots of miles. 100 extra miles. I didn't get stuck in the mud, as a result. My hiney paid the price. Got a few showers on the way. Chilly. Traffic was surprisingly OK. Blasted south to Flagstaff then hung an east for 80 miles on I-40. No wind. I-40 is windy a lot on that stretch.

Going to top up on gas and roll on some dirt or wet dirt for a few miles. I hope to snap a pic or two.

So did you take that same dirt road you got stuck on before, or did you have to detour because of the rain? Nice that you got to see Ted again -- and his new companion!

Hey there bum. It's tx246. The Texas guy on the Ktm 525exc. We left right behind you. Saw the same storm and laid up behind a mound by the lake on the right. Saw a dirt road that headed away from the storm. It became perfect never ridden this year kind of two track. We went 10 miles to the left of the storm and paralled the pavement on dirt for awhile before returning to the pavement. Right where sleet was still on the road. We figured you ran thru the storm. The electric show sceered us. Glad you made it thru safe. We are in Boulder. Sleeping inside tonight. Rolling the Burr Trail and Mexican Hat tomorrow. Thanks again for breakfast.

Sadly I didn't. The rain was iffy so I wimped out. That's OK. Turned out I saw plenty of mud on the way to camp last night.

It was so clean and happy when we waved bye a few days ago in your driveway. Now it's dirty and happy.

    My pleasure!

Right after I snapped that photo, a few big fat juicy bolts zapped in the vicinity of the falling stuff. The little welts on my left bicep remind me of the ouch moments. Who knew those tiny fountain drink ice pieces could be used as a deterrent?

Ride well! .....and who knows, maybe our paths will cross again someday. Maybe in Moab. Maybe at my favorite coffee shop. Mmmmm

    Thanks!

I'll try to remember to wave. I will be chewing the dirt on 288 in an hour. I'm freezing here in Heber. OK not really. But I need my heat. Globe will warm me up some.

Really liking this RR. Got the itch to do something similar. Got a used Africa Twin, and now you got me wanting a 701!!
The old XR400 I don't think would be up for this. But maybe it would.
Only found this yesterday, and just got caught up. Takes a while, with flipping back and forth to maps and Google Earth to follow along. Omelets or burritos, maybe together, that would be great!
    Thanks for an awesome read!

Is it too late in the year to start a trip like this? Maybe not Alaska this time, but Texas to Colorado, Utah, Arizona?

Scored a 2nd cup of coffee. Sitting in the shade with my jacket on. Easy like a Sunday morning. Got 55 miles on the odo from the last fill up. 120 miles to Globe. Gonna dump my spare gallon of gas in the main tank. I'll be thinking about NFL Football on the way home. Omelettes, too.

Last night after those delish but gross onion rings, I watched the wall of rain get closer to me. Seemed like it was travelling 70mph right in my direction. Then it was bath time. Bike and me are nice and clean.

Time to turn right. On the dirt road.

Picture is kinda dark. There is dirt underneath that water. I think.

    Nice sunset.
    20170909_184403.jpg

Muddy and yucky. Again. It happens. Everything gets cleaned when I get home. The side bags get 86'd.

Stop and dismount and the mud is 2 inches deep. Soft and fluffy, though. Messy..

Set up the bum hut and dozed off as the stars came out. One of those big critters with the clothes dryer mounted on top of his head kept saying "Hey, Baby!" all night long.

A coyote (one of my distant relatives) translated. We chatted a little then he yelped off. Yayhoo.

    This morning:

Romeo came by this morning and I asked if he'd hang for a bit and hold my rain fly on his antlers so it'd dry in the morning sun. He looked all offended. I tossed him some leftover alfalfa I stored for emergencies. He tore it up while I dried the rest of my laundry. Told him the chicks dig a guy with laundry on his head. Don't be so gullible, McFly.

Dry clothes and rain fly packed. Told bone head Later. Braaaaaped outta there.

    Thanks!

Omellete burrito. Yum. An omelette you can eat wrapped in nature's most delicious envelope. Double yum.

If you do this similar trip on a 701 with the stock seat...you might opt for the post-trip fanny replacement. I'm scheduled next Tuesday for that procedure. Takes about an hour. It's just an outpatient procedure, but they put vodka in your IV drip.

    Don't know.

It's cooler and days are shorter. Less tourists in those rental RVs on the road. I usually do my annual canyon trip in late September or early October. That's just AZ and southern UT.

Dave, Excellent! Thought maybe I missed the chance this year. Might have time, and I'm kind of minimalist. Means Ive bummed around and not got my stuff together that I need. Just the basics. Soft bags, and duffel. Kind of lazy that way. And first bike trip and all that means.
    Thanks again, maybe see ya.

Blasted down 288 in the last dirt of the trip.
    20170910_120612.jpg

Dry dirt, lots of washboard areas. I was Luke's Fatha about 50 times. Still makes me laugh every time.

    Time for summer gloves!
    20170910_123412.jpg
Loosened the top buttons on the jacket. Unzipped the vents. Now that's what I'm talking about. My heat. Comfy when moving.

Rolled into Globe and wanted a fast fill up. So, of course, I stop here.
    20170910_131852.jpg
Like it has my name on it.

Bounced out and eased to a local fast food restaurant for a refreshment and a chair.

Hwy patrol went blazing by on my exit from the gas station. Better check roads before I turn south.

    115 miles to the shower.
    It's 2pm.
    Full tank of gas.
    I'm wearing sunglasses.
    Punch it.

But, the question is, do you have "cop brakes", "cop motor", "cop suspension"? Just wondering...

Back home. Rolled in 4ish. Jumped in the truck to run errands thinking about Sunday Night Football!
Had a little glitch, tho. Got home and got betrayed. No Football tonight. :-(
