Heading up to Colgate University this Friday from New York City. Which route should I take? I have all day... I'm going to stay there all week and I hope to do some riding in the area. Any sugestions? Any dirt roads I should check out?
Couple of possibilities below staying on state roads but anything you do on county roads tends to be good stuff in that area. Either one is probably the better part of 6 or 7 hours to get up there. 1. Taconic North to Rt 23, across the Hudson then 23A west (may have to do 9W south for a few to get to 23A), 214 south, 28 west, 30 south around the reservoirs, 206 west, 8 north to 80 west then 12/12B north on into Hamilton. 2. Start at Port Jervis, 97 north to 30 north, 28 north to Cooperstown then 80 across to 12 north, then 12B. Enjoy the time up there. Colgate is one of the prettiest campuses you'll come across though I might be biased being an alum. There are a number of dirt roads in the neighborhood, just don't remember them well enough anymore to suggest any specifically. Kevin
12 south to Sherburne (pleasant valley views) 80 east to Columbus (rolling hills) the grey road east to Edmeston (rolling hills) 80 east to Cooperstown (rolling hills) 80 north to Fort Plain (beautiful lakeshore, then twisties through farmland) 5s east to Canajoharie (ehhh) 10 north to Higgins Bay (BEAUTIFUL twisties through forest) 8 west to Poland (pleasant) 28 and 169 to Little Falls (pleasant) 167 to Richfield Springs (nice twisties through farmland) 28 south to reconnect with 80, back to Edmeston, Columbus, Sherburne) This is a very nice ride. Post a report if you make the loop.
