Yeah, Tokyo is pretty nuts. But so was Osaka and Kyoto. As far as Hawaii goes, I'll be on the big island.. where there aren't to many people. Trying to hook up a moto there if anyone has a bike or friends with a bike :evil

I'm surprised no one commented either. It was such an artful shot.

Don't get me wrong. Electricity scares me also. But I can "see" it and understand it. Good luck with the ME stuff. Maybe I'll be reading your RR in a few years :deal

Yup. It was great. Thanks for everything Gen. Especially the phone. I couldn't have gotten the shipping set up or gotten those dates if I didn't have a phone :evil

I'll cross post on there and ask them too help you out. I have a friend storing my ktm 300 on Oahu if you end up over there. You're welcome to use it. It needs to be ridden since I won't be there until May. I have good friends there that will help you with transport and will even take you riding.

Guys on Maui are just starting a moto rental business, I believe this is it:
    http://www.mauimotoadventures.com/

They got a bunch of KLRs and do guided tours, I picked all this up on
Accidental Broadcast's Youtube channel (#1 moto vloger in my book).

    I'd go there!
    Those guys are nuts!

That business is ran by Mike and our very own Chris Puder. He did a pretty entertaining ride report on here a few years back. We ended riding together in Mexico and I visited him on Maui last year before the business started up. If you want a good ride in Hawaii definitely look him up, just don't bring your girlfriend or you will have to keep an eye out for this lady killer.

Noah, what Stan said. Stan also contacted ADVrider Sfront from Florida who keeps a 530 at my place, you can ride it if you like with the understanding that it's returned in the same condition, I can check with another friend who keeps a street legal XR650R here as well.

    When are you getting here?

    Wow. thanks everyone!

I'll be flying into Kona Airport the week before Christmas and flying out after the new year sometime. My sister lives near Kona so that's where I'll be staying. I'm hoping to explore the island a few days.

First of all AWESOME ride report, really been enjoying it, and when I saw you bought my friend Lukes 690 to continue the trip it made it even better!

When you are in Hawaii Jason over at www.hiadv.com rents dual sports on big island of all sorts. Great bikes and great guy! If you make it to Maui let me know! :D

I'll be off a fair amount of that time so let us know what type of riding you want to do, there are ADVriders pretty much all around the Big Isle so we have the terrain covered. HiAdv & Speedmonkey7 in Kona, Big Bamboo in Waimea, Gasser and I in Hilo with bigger bikes on the west side and twosmokes on the east.

Great write up Noah, definitely enjoying your journey very much!

I'm a ME as well, but sometimes the ME stuff scares me quite a bit more then electricity. When you are standing 5 feet away from a piping system that is carrying hydrogen at 1600 deg F at 500 psig, you always wonder how the integrity of the metal and welds are holding up. Can't see that stuff either (at least while the system is online)! :eek1

Noah did you work on the bagillion windmills here in Tehachapi CA, I've never seen so many in one place, sprout out of the hills like dandelions.[IMG]

No need to quote, but I can't help but wonder what kind of hell that windfarm has inflicted on the bird population on that hillside.

If methheads had wings I'm sure someone would complain about that too.

I like birds and conservation but I wonder why no one has done a study on how many birds die due to burning coal?

I work a fair bit in oil & gas and that's what I wonder plenty often, especially older plants. No way to know when a pipe or valve might blow.

    Hey Noah,

Like many, I have been following along in the shadows, and enjoying your RR and also the really great info on your various repairs, etc. I've been lucky thru life w a ME father, who taught us how to build and repair w whatever might be available. A vanishing approach here in the lower 48. Gotta love the Nack.
With kids just about out of the house, I bought a '13 690 this fall. Never rode one. It just looked like the way to go. Super Stoked!!!
I picked up on your thread while searching for info. Wow! Captivating.
Another Gallatin Valley resident, class of '80. And yes, it's DUMPING here as I write! :clap

On to the question: (Could not find reference in the thread, sorry if I missed it). Did you switch out the exhaust on either of your bikes? If so, to which type/ model? I see you reverted to the stock air filter on the '08, and recall your #2 map setting.....any and all related comments/clarity appreciated.

Hope you enjoy Hawaii, Thailand, OZ n NZ! looking forward to following along.

I opted for the wings exhaust and LOVE it. Lighter, cooler, and sounds sssooo good. And if you don't like the sound of the exhaust, you can change out the insert and it sounds just like stock.
