Had a fair few questions this year about the oil cooler prototype from Terry Brown that Terry and I were running in Siberia this year ... the round cylindrical thing where the oil filter cap normally lives.
Well the legendary Stephan Scheffelmeier is now set to begin producing a batch, improved and refined from the prototypes we had, to his normal fantasy quality and will kick start the CNC machine for it once there are an initial 20 takers.
In return for being one of the initial 20, he is offering a 20% discount, for a price of 114.24 EUR.
The oil cooler adds a couple hundred ccs to your oil capacity (2.5 litres) and by both increasing oil volume and by proving a finned cooling chamber to reduce the temperature of the oil, the level of protection for the engine is significantly enhanced. One of the few causes of failures on this engine under rallying conditions was losing the main bearings, due to the oil being too hot under extreme conditions and being behind bashplates that cut off any airflow to the bottom of the engine. Increasing the volume also increases the service life of the oil, meaning cleaner, better lubricating oil at any given amount of mileage.
For me personally, fitting some sort of oil cooler has been a goal for several years, both to increase capacity and cool the oil. But there was never an easy or economical way to do it ... until Terry hit upon his simple solution. Rather than 500-600 EUR for an oil radiator,plus plumbing, plus finding some way to tap into the oil circuit twice, this simple easy solution has done exactly what I wanted something to do ... offer both cooling and extra capacity for the oil that is simple to fit and use and is very affordable (much cheaper than I thought it would turn out to be). To get it manufactured with scheffelmeiers quality is the icing on the cake.
So can we have a show of hands .... and when we get to 20 I will tell Stephan to fire up the CNC machine.
Hmmm.... I would guess that it would fit all the Rotax Engines from 2000 up to 2007?
(Probably the China 650's, too?)
Could anyone confirm especially if this would fit the single spark Rotax?
Other than that, cool item, for a pretty good price, I've been thinking about the oil cooler issue for some time now.

They all have the same oil filter cover (just different colours): You may or may not have to carve away a bit of the plastic chain guards on other models , but the cooler should fit the engine.

How the hell could be the terra about 30kg-s heavier than the X challenge? Is there any way to burn that fat off?
All steel frame and swing arm, twin exhausts, bigger fuel tank. Can't see you dropping much weight without it costing an rm and a leg.
Well technically speaking its 21 kgs heavier. Dry weight of 165 kg vs 144 for the XC.
A lot of the XCs frame is cast alloy. Only the uppermost part of it is steel.
The Swingarm will obviously weigh more ... I doubt anyone will come up with an aftermarket swingarm in alloy for the bike ... so that one you are wearing.
On the other hand ....
The XC needs weight added to it that the Terra doesnt ... so not all of the 21 kgs difference is as real as it looks.
On the XC you really should swap the airshock for an emulsion shock. The difference in weight there is about 2 kgs. Then you have the steel subframe. A steel subframe on the XC adds 3.5 kgs.
So once you give the XC the steel subframe and emulsion shock it really needs you are up around 149 - 150 kgs ... which oddly enough is about what the X-Country weighs with those bits on it.
Then the difference is only 15 kgs. Out of that 15 kgs, I reckon you will lose 5 kgs by getting rid of the cat, and putting a single exhaust in.
Now you are down to only 10 kgs difference.
Not sure there is much more you will be able to shift. I reckon the frame and swingarm are just about 10 kgs heavier. Just a shame they didnt build it with a lighter frame and swingarm to begin with

first of all sorry for the rant and hijack and your right mate, but first when I heard about it I thought they`ll shoehorn the 650 into the te630-s frame and suspension and well reading about what they`ve done...just disappointed it could have been IT...
