Very well done riding it out! What made you think to accelerate?
Any idea what caused the blowout?

You don't know what the alternative outcome could have been in any of these anecdotes. Maybe the Oilhead rider could/couldn't have tubed it, or would/wouldn't have been able to ride away on an older bike (likely to be ridden more slowly through the pothole, it's not necessarily apples to apples). Maybe the guy who hit a brick would have taco'd a lighter tube-type rim and blown the tube out the gap. Neither system is a panacea so you have to decide what you think will likely happen to you and what's important. At some point, a bad enough collision will disable the bike somehow.
Twice I think, we've been swinging sledgehammers on the side of the road to get a really bad dent out of a tubeless rim, but that was just to allow it to turn again. :eek1 Sorry we weren't there for the R850R rider.
For me, tubeless wins for street use. I've dented rims several times and always been able to ride away, but if I had to patch a tube every time I've had a puncture, I'd probably still be out there walking.
I have been running without tubes in the stock wheels on my 76 LeMans for ever. No problem so far.
Hello, im new to motorcycling and to BMW airheads. I own a 1982 R100RS. Recently did just under 7000km around south africa on it. I made it back just in time as my front tyres tube tore quite a bit just from old age ( i think it might have been 28 years old!). Anyway, the tire is a tubeless tire and after realising this ive just put the tire on and pumped it up. Is my bike not meant to be ridden with tubeless tires? I havent ridden it yet (doing maintanance) but it seems to be keeping the pressure. Help on this matter would be appreciated because I dont want to do anything stupid!

The wheel is designed for a tube and a tyre. You'll need to ensure you don't lose air via the valve stem if you choose to run tubeless.
The tyre may say tubeless, but these days most do.
Many run tubeless on these rims, and have done for years, but they aren't designed for that. Your choice.
Instinct made me accelerate I think....I don't really know. Just did it.
I didn't see it, but the 2 cars drivers that also hit it, and burst a tyre each, said it was a broken truck brake.
