I went to the auction yesterday. Yeah, kind of weird seeing nice cars noted as "structural damage". I'm thinking that not all used car dealers disclose that info when they turn around & sell the car.

Either way, I did find that there are different categories that they list on the motorcycles: theft, collision, donation, etc. I'm sure the "donation" ones are the best bet, but then again, why are people donating them?

"theft" sometimes is a good bet, at least if you want a solid structure for a parts bike. Often insurance companies will write the bike off once the wiring harness has been messed with.

"Donations" often come from families that have a death in the family, and they hire a company to settle the estate, and in many cases those companies don't mess with cars/boats/motorcycles because of variability in condition and relative value. And, in some cases, those items are actually included in the home sale or property sale, so those people or the original families just want rid of them, and hence "donate" them to certain people in exchange for of course, a tax write off. A friend of mine has a family business that handles dealing in the legal interpretation of estate contracts and the said sales of items; even though the dad is a car expert, he still never touches any motorcycles or cars, instead calls people he knows to handle them or offer the family a reasonable value based on their opinion.

Of course, there are many other scenarios. Again, you can defintely find some decent deals, but it's not like going on the flea market on here, getting some good history of the bike, and being able to get a solid feel of it's history and actually riding it.

Agreed! I’ll be back to Lauderdale on the 17th. Anyone up for a midweek ride sometime 17-23?

Shinko 700's. Good tire for 50/50. Not great at anything but not terrible either. They work for me as a nice compromise tire. They seem to last a quite while as well. Rear normally lasts around 6,000 miles and I typically get around 9,000 out of the front.

Rode Loxahatchee and Corbett with Puttering yesterday. We managed about 110 miles with half being dirt roads. It was a nice casual ride to shake down the new to me DR650 I picked up on Saturday. The previous owner never had it in the dirt so I popped the cherry on the big girl.

We had one lil mishap. We were riding the double track below the levy when it turned into a water crossing that I didn't want to try. I rode the DR up the hill onto the levy and Jason pondered crossing the water. I discouraged him and said he should turn around the way we came and get back on the levy that way. Instead, He decided to ride up the embankment like the DR but he had a few things going against him. The first was that his tires were packed in mud. The second is that the Versys is not a billy goat. The last is that he doesn't listen to good advice (It's become a pattern when we ride together). The end result was the Versys bucking him off toward the downhill side. 2 summersaults later, he was back on the double track and the versys was laying downhill with it's tires uphill. Neither man nor beast was injured in these photos. I of course apologized for taking the photo before helping him.

    Good times!

Nice shots! I'd have loved to take my DL650 along... if the Versys can hack it (sorta) then my weestrom should be good to go as well.

The wee would be fine for what we ride. We realize that we don't have anything challenging in the area, but we still like to get out and enjoy a few hours off the beaten path. I've taken my GSA on this same trip, excluding the lil climb that brought the Versys down.

That is WAAAAY to clean. :-) I sold my WR250R and bought the DL650 since there really isnt anything good down here that demands the little bike and getting around on the highways with the little wrr wasn't much fun. It would pull hard enough (barely) for the turnpike but it was... well... unpleasant.

Here's a glam shot of the DL650 in touring mode... This is up north from a couple months ago. My eldest boy rode the DL and I rode my FJR up to Wytheville, VA.

Great photos! I had a blast. I had to at least try that hill ...now I know what to expect next time.
It was a ruff day for the versys but it is still running strong as my daily commute.
Let's ride it again after the new year.
Att Adam and josh (the riders we met at Corbett) hope your checking out this forum.

Happy Holidays!!! So I'm going to the Polar Bear Rally up in Ocala area. Anyone else? I have a camp site reserved too. I'm thinking of starting to ride up there on Wednesday and do as much back roads/dirt/gravel as possible and if up to the camp early on Thursday go riding and exploring around that area. Then return on kinda the same idea ending back in FLL on Monday mid day. This is all tentative and open to ideas.
