The section of Bowman Rd from Bowman Lake to Jackson Meadows is a well traveled road, nothing difficult, only a few rocky sections. Once you get passed the end of Bowman Lake you've gotten through the most difficult section and it's just a field of baby heads you could drive a mini van through.

Henness Pass from Jackson Meadows is asphalt until you cross Hwy 89, then it's a smooth rock/gravel road into Verdi. Between Jackson Meadows and Hwy 89 the old section of Henness Pass parallels the newer asphalt so there is a dirt/gravel option but it's a bit cut up and you can find yourself off route if you miss a turn.

I'm planning on taking a weekend with a buddy on his KLR, I'm running TKC80's so I have decent traction, But I'm unsure of good routes out there.. I mean, total range is 250 miles on road, and about 150 offroad fuel-wise with what we bring with us

Any good routes? I can handle some single track believe it or not.
I'm fine with anywhere within 2 hours of here to get to the area. I'm located in Sacramento.

I wish I had a garmin, I can convert almost any maps, and I can read the standard GPX with my GPS.

PM an email address and I'll send you a GPX file. It looks like a 230 mile loop from Roseville (80 and 65). Goes 80 to Colfax, out 174 to U Bet/Chalk Bluff to 20, then up to Hwy 49 at Yuba Pass on all dirt roads. Then down 49 to Downievile, back on dirt into Nevada City. Plenty of sight seeing along the route, should be an easy two day loop with no real technical riding.

Gas is available in Colfax, Downieville, and Nevada City so there are no gas issues. Plenty of camping up near Jackson Meadows or Milton Reservoir. Food available in Colfax, Washington, Sierra City, Downieville, and Nevada City

    If I ain't flyin'...I'm there!

If you guy's haven't been to Troops' Throwback Thursday thing in Grass Valley at Paco's Tacos...ya gotta check it out. Even if all u have is an old dirtbike...in the back of yer truck.
Troop has created a real cool, old school 'scene' here of vintage bikes of all kinds specializing in minimalist, homemade creations of the bobber variety, but all types welcome, even some new stuff. Live music.

Here's a vid I shot of Throwback Thursday in '11

I would love to take you guys out and show you the local good roads, but I'm busy this weekend.

Do you guys want to get dirty, or just ride some good roads in the hills?

:waveScott, Im available for a ride next Saturday (5 Oct) if that works better for you. I would mind doing some dirt, as long as its not too technical. I just got the Explorer and havent installed the crash bars yet. Im also coming from the sport bike world, so still getting used to the handling and weight of the bike.

If we stay on pavement, I will invite a couple of my buddies along as well.

I could fit in a a shorter ride in the middle of the day on Sept 28. (Oct 5 is even worse for me.)

There's a one-hour loop out Scott Road to Latrobe/Shingle Roads that has a few miles of dirt, but your friends could go out around to Jackson Road and meet us where we come back out on Latrobe and S Shingle.

There's another ride off of Foresthill that has a lot more dirt that can be done in three to four hours. It's all relatively easy stuff that you can drive a car on if you don't mind it getting dirty. It's also much more scenic. Although it could be ridden by a determined rider on a sport bike, I wouldn't recommend it.

Let me know if either of these sound interesting.

I'm usually around, for light dirt (Running street tires now) and any street on the weekends. DL650. Skid-plate and crash-bars equipped. :)
