    Hi guys,

I'm in the area on my helping survivors mission (madetosoar.org). I want to get into some off road riding here on my dual sport KLX250S, nothing too technical or intense, just some easy trail riding for a beginner like me! Any suggestions?

    Here's what I'm looking for:

Light trail riding, not super technical single track or very rough terrain (I'm still learning)

Lessons with an experienced trail / mx rider to help me learn in the dirt

Looking for a ride buddy or two as well!

    Thanks,
    Mark

I'll be glad to show you around on Saturday, February 1st. You'll have to meet me in Folsom or somewhere further east, though.

If you're fairly new, we might want to start out over at Prairie City for a bit of practice first. The last rider I took along on what I had considered easy dirt managed to lock up the front wheel on a downhill turn on a dirt road and bent a few things on his BMW. I would like to avoid having that happen again.

Decided to run up to Graniteville last Saturday, to see if I could get all the way to Bowmann Lake, and to look at the pit on Spanish mine road.

    No snow on the Buttes

Took a wrong turn and ended up going up to the Ancho something mine, forgot the name. Got back on the right track and passed the big pit.

Graniteville. In January. We're in trouble.

A few miles past town, I had some traction issues on ice.

Bike came through it ok, my leg broke the fall. Need a new handlebar though, rode home with my throttle hand two inches above and to the rear of my left hand.

I figured Bowmann was snow free, but there'd be a lot more ice on the road so I turned around and headed back through Washington.

WeatherUnderground says rain late this week, hope it's a good storm.

We were up there a few weeks ago and got stopped by the same amount of ice in the spot shown in the picture above that. We did not attempt a crossing.

St. Stan! good pics and ride report (except fer that 'lil ol' patch of ice). Great exploring weather for January!
Yea, it's Ancho Erie Mine...here's a vid I shot exploring up there in '12 on the Bush Pig DR650. Very cool stuff to see.

Speaking of drought, here's a pic I shot last week flying low over Bullards Bar Dam, The now exposed bench you see was used to build the dam.

Looks nice up there except the lack of snow. Yeah we're hurting this year.
I can't beleive you're running the stock skid plate on that KLR, broke mine the first 2 weeks of owning it. :lol3

Visualizerent, nice gold nugget. Bullards Bar not looking good. Same with Oroville and Shasta Lakes. ECV, good memories (insert braying jackass here, :D)

Thanks for the link to the Ancho Eire site, I'll have to check that out.

Speaking of snow, 4 and 108 are still closed, but Monitor Pass (89) is open, rare for this time of year.

Folsom Lake, from Jan. 20. The historic townsite of Red Bank has been exposed by the low water and is quite the tourist attraction.

Just to avoid possible misunderstanding, no, you can't ride your motorcycle to the ruins. You need to park in one of the same places that all of the cars are parked. If you're willing to pay twelve bucks, the marina parking lot is best. Otherwise park south of there on Hidden Acres Drive and walk a bit further. A mountain bike might be the best way to get out there, if you don't mind riding over rough ground.

I was just there on Saturday and would have loved to have ridden my XR650L on the exposed areas, but I try to be a law abiding citizen for stuff like that.

I'll be helping out a fairly new (to the dirt) rider on a KLX250 on Saturday. We'll be going over to Prairie City OHV park to do some practice, then heading out to find other dirt. Probably roads around Foresthill like Ponderosa and Yankee Jims.

If any of you are interested in tagging along, we're meeting at the Chevron station in Folsom on the corner of Prairie City and Iron Point at 9:00 a.m..

The ride should be appropriate for any motorcycle that is supposed to work in the dirt. I'll be riding my XR650L, but I don't expect to go anywhere that wouldn't work just as well on my KTM 990.

I was going to suggest Latrobe Road and Michigan Bar Road, that's pretty close to Prairie City. I actually went through there on my W650 way back before I got the KLX.

Also there's an unpaved section of Meiss Road between Dillard and Ione road not too far from there, nothing special, just a ranch road.

Latrobe/S Shingle/Michigan Bar is an option if the other guy doesn't want to do the longer ride around Foresthill. We might even be able to work on our water crossing skills. :D

Sounds like a great plan, but alas my skills are lacking a little to jump into that level of commitment. I'll work on it and try to make the next one.

I'm up or equally down to ride some pavement and dirt, it aught to be perfect and just wet enough to be near dustless!

Yankee Jims, Shirttail, ect… or wherever. I'm in Fair Oaks, so ~9:00 somewhere around auburn or Colfax is doable for me. Or a little earlier or later I don't care.

    I'll watch this space.

Have a good ride Scott and Mark! FYI, smile and make small talk with the ranger at Prarie City, they sometimes let you in free if you ride in.

See you in Colfax. Guess I'll ride the WR. What do you anticipate the route to be? Thanks Tom
