My son is leaving the nest in a few days to go live with his uncle (Sam) for the next 6 years (minimum) as part of the U.S. Air Force........so I was sitting here this evening reminising a bit about one of our local father/son rides last Spring........decided to post up some pics/tracks for others to enjoy with their buddies/kids..........

We parked at the Pinyon Trail head and headed off towards "The Squeeze" where we made our first stop of the morning after passing through the rocks (it's a tight "squeeze" in a jeep but NO BFD on a bike)…….perfect day……sunny/empty/just me and my son…..awesome…. :clap

As we prepared to leave The Squeeze I pulled rank on the boy and said, " here, you mount the pig for the drop off, etc.”…..he wasn’t overly pleased with that executive decision but he made it look easy…….

Followed by a well deserved "Adventure Rider Salute" at the bottom of Heart Attack Hill…. :lol3

He handled the pig like a piglet……no problems for a fit/skilled 17yr old (I was happy to rest and ride the 520)

Once we got back down into Fish Creek, I remounted the Exxon Valdez Adventure Sled and we headed for Slot Canyon…….Since Jarrett was now back on the 520 he seemed to be having some issues with the front end :rolleyes …….you see, he couldn’t keep it down :lol3 ……..here he is sailing by me in the canyon's of Fish Creek…..he eventually dropped the front wheel (so he could turn the corner) :rofl

Then we headed over through Slot Canyon……from there it was off to Fonts Point……pretty awesome scenery...........

    The view at Fonts Point

We inhaled some cheap Mex food in Borrego Springs and set off for Culp/Jasper/Grapevine……man, I love that series of trails in either direction :clap :clap…..only snapped one photo along Jasper…..

Then we headed down to Rodriguez Spur to finish off the afternoon……a couple of shots from just above the barbed wire gate (BTW, I set waypoints for several items for future use/reference …..like the location of that "Barbed Wire" gate for folks new to the area/trail…….it’s not that visible so I could see someone from outside the area pulling a “Steve McQueen from The Great Escape” and getting tangled in that mess after braking too late……so now it’s marked ;) )

And that’s it……..nice ~135 mile day/ride with my son…….it doesn't get a whole lot better than that.....unless you throw on another day :lol3

    Enjoy the Tracks :D

    Two suggestions:

    1) You might want to just stay on Split Mtn Rd. to the 78, head west on the 78, then turn right towards slot canyon rather than taking Old Kane Springs Rd.......that ~6.5 mile stretch along Old Kane Springs Rd. *may* be pretty whooped out in segments and not worth the time/hassle.....

    2) Be advised that you need a range of ~100 miles to get to Borrego Springs for gas following these tracks and your normal fuel range will suffer riding in the sand (Jarrett is more heavy on the throttle than me......he ran the 520 dry on the final paved stretch into Borrego Spings about a mile short of the gas station.......luckily I was on the 620 super tanker and had plenty to spare).....so if your range is marginal I'd suggest carrying a fuel bottle or cutting over to the Blu Inn and topping off once you reach Split Mtn Rd.....then cut back down the 78 to the turn off for Slot Canyon.....

Nice one, Chris. My son's been out of the nest for a year and a half, we still ride together when we can, and he can still whoop my ass on a dirt bike without even half trying:rofl

Can't think of a better way to spend time with my kids than riding...thanks for sharing this. I've got a new place to put on the list now--amazing country.

It warms my heart seeing father and son riding together.

I actually laughed out loud when you pulled rank on your son and took the lighter bike in the rough stuff.

Me and my son years ago were riding what is called the toughest dualsport ride in the country-----"200 miles of bad road" it was called. The riding was true technical single track (this was 15 years ago)------he was riding my nice light Suzuki RMX250 2 stroke and I was riding my new ATK605 dualsport. I got plum wore out----and stopped and told him we were switching bikes----and with a smile I told him he didn't have a choice in the matter :D

Me and Gaspipe rode the same trails on my 520 a while back ---and even tho I'm 58---it was a breeze.

We still laugh about that one to this day.

    thanks for the memories.

Rode this route Sunday. The weather was a little wicked on the way out- rain, wind, cold (well, cold for me. I read about you sub-40 degree:1drink riders in the Great Frozen North and I'd stay home) and wet. Shortly after hitting the desert, the clouds parted and it was an epic day. Sand was hard packed, temps moderate lots of fluffy white clouds against azure blue skies.

    The reason I ride.

Go ahead- call it Kalifornia. Flame on. Then go shovel your sidewalks.

Thanks for posting this ride. I was able to ride it twice this past week with some buddies. One of the days it was raining. So good. We rode it from the s22 side of Ocotillo where we were camped and mixed in a couple other canyons from there. We were able to escape the Ocotillo New years craziness. Stopped in Borrego Springs at Jilbertos mexican food for juevos rancheros. I highly recommend timing your ride around breakfast or lunch there. Beautiful desert ride...Thanks again

Hey Fake Name, Any leads on getting an administrator from San Diego Adventure riders to give me access to the board? I signed up twice and still awaiting to hear from an Admin. I just picked up an XR 650L and am dying to ride with the board members!
