I'm a bit new to sat navs so does anyone know of 4wd or outback Aus maps that can be downloaded to android. I don't really want to buy a dedicated sat nav when I have a good gps on my phone. Just need good maps.

Yer well you can wade through all them .. or search..

Hint.. your thread tittle would be better if you mentioned "Android GPS maps for Australia" ... go ahead and post another thread on one of those forums.. in the mean time?

A google on "Android GPS maps" should give you lots

For Oz google "Android GPS maps Australia"

    ------------------
    OSM (vector map)
You should be able to get an app that uses 'Open Street maps' .. and have them stored on your phone (so no phone connection required). OSM do not have all the tracks .. you can contribute your tracks to make it better.

    Topo maps (raster)
http://androzic.com/ This is an app that can use 'raster' maps .. specifically topo maps. I believe you can get the 250k:1 topto maps for all of Australia for free off the web.

Let us know how you get on and what you decide on.

I have just bought a GS5 and so loading maps in my next task.

It is a bit daunting, but then again so was the learning curve with my Garmin and the associated software was steep.

So can this app do routing like I can on basecamp. that is, can I pre-plan a route and then store it for later use?

maps - are a downloadable file that are used by

applications - that display that file, along with tracks/routes/waypoints/etc

check out locus for ALL THE BELLS and whistles,
osmand for a few less options
and oruxmaps/dualsportmaps/maverick/etc on the android market.

there is a HUGE amount of information in hte 'will smartphones replace stand along gps' thread here on advrider.

check out locus and osmand for ROUTING options. the short answer is YES you can preplan, or even EDIT the route/track , right there on your phone. then store it, SHARE IT , or call it up for use later.

the important part is that you understand MAPS are usable completely offline, with no cellular signal, and easily found.

Hema Explorer is worth a look too. Doesn't auto route.
