I do that regardless on any app I use. I need my guidance to be as flawless as possible, so I only have to quickly glance at the phone if there is an upcoming turn. What I dont want is an app telling me to make a U turn when I know the route is straight, and was straight when I proofed it the night before - which has happened a number of times with Scenic.

I am planning on pushing my map apps hard this year, because I need to find a "best (for me)" app that allows easy route importing, offline maps and can jump continents. I want to hit the road full time in the next 18 months and spend the 3-5 years after that seeing the world. I need something reliable for that without going for an external GPS device.

I'm very interested in that comparison between apps. Not only to make Scenic better but, if you'd like, also to post a story on the motomappers blog. If you're interested if course.

What apps are on your shortlist for testing at the moment?

Short List of apps, pretty much in order of use.
    1. Navigon Cruiser (replaced Navigon North America), my current go-to. It is as moto-centric as you can get, so far. They have really done well to make their Navigon base mesh with how motorcyclists ride. I dont have to do as much route planning with it as with the rest because I can just set it to get really wild with the routing through smaller and windier roads. I generally will put a mid point and end point and let it route between. It is also really good about rerouting without pausing or a lot of hesitance. It does it so smooth on the fly I have never heard it day "Do a U-Turn if possible" except for one time when I turned down a road that ended up being a dead end. I use this one in my car as well.
    2. Navigon North America (used since before I had a motorcycle.) - This one just works. Not as many scenic settings as Cruiser, but then it is a bit older and not geared specifically towards motorcycles.
    3. Rever - no turn-by-turn directions, I have not purchased the subscription.
    4. inRoute Route Planner - I gave it a look a while back, but got lost in my searching for a "perfect" app. I am also not a fan of their premium plans - too constricting.
    4. Google Maps - backup, just in case.
    5. Apple Maps - backup, just in case.
    6. Waze - not really a great moto-centric app. Too many bells and notifications and distractions. I dont even use it in my car.

I will check the Blog out when I get a chance. I was not aware of Calimoto, so that one will have to get a test as well.

The biggest + Scenic has going for it is the Furkot Import! I am headed down to NC and TN in May to ride for 4 days, and I planned out a ride for each day. Being able to easily import those routes is awesome. However, I am a bit leary about the routes being handled properly and not sending us off on random u-turns or off track. None of my routes are going off-road or anything. When I imported my Friday route, I had to fix a number of spots that would have sent me astray. But I go over the routes with a fine-tooth comb. Riding is distracting enough, especially with distracted cagers, following a route should be able to be done in the background with minimal effort while riding.

You should give a serious look at Navigon Cruiser - they did a great job with their route selection tool.

I've noticed something strange with my Scenic app while handing off between devices.

    iPad 4 - iOS 10.3.3 (can't update to 11) - Scenic v1.66
iPhone 6 - iOS 11.2.6 - Scenic v1.66 (plan to try to use as a dedicated GPS in airplane mode)
    iPhone X - iOS 11.3 - Scenic v1.66

Here's the issue I'm having. I created a route in Google Maps on my PC and dropped the URL into the motomappers.com web app. I then imported the route on my iPhoneX and saved it without any edits. Later, I opened the route on my iPad to clean up and edit. I didn't realize it at the time, but my iPad was running Scenic v1.56, but has since been updated to v1.66 after the edits were made. After making edits and saving, I am able to view the revised route on my iPhone 6, but not on my iPhone X. After several attempts to refresh, log out/in, kill app and restart, re-boot devices, etc my iPhone X still displays the original, unedited version of the route. I have made other edits across devices such as changing routes from public to private and deleting routes in my "favorite" list with those changes being made on all devices after refreshing. I even started navigation of the route on my X to be sure it wasn't just displaying the original route preview in the favorite list, but the nav was correct...the nav was not correct. Any idea on why my iPhone X is still displaying the original imported route?

I intentionally did this to test the hand off capability between all devices and the simple fact that it's easier to make edits on a larger screen such as the iPad.

Also, and please forgive me if this has been asked before, but is there any way to drop a "waypoint" on a route to mark a place of special interest?

Hmmm. I'm not sure what's causing this... v1.56 (which was the version you used while making the edits... correct?) still had some issues with syncing if I remember correctly. It could also be a difference in map version between the devices. I recommend the following... since by now probably the sync mechanism got corrupted...Remove Scenic from all your devices and then redownload it from the app store on each device. Then login on your devices ONE-BY-ONE (so not simultaneously on multiple devices). That should bring map versions in sync and you'll start with a clean 'syncing' slate.

Know what you mean. Currently Scenic can not distinguish between a stop and a via point. It's not possible to add 'stops' and get ETA, ETD etc information on it. I'm planning to add this in the big update. Until that time the only way to get this is to split up the route in 2 smaller routes.

That appears to have fixed the issue. Thanks, Guido!

I'm looking forward to the new update. This app has come a long way since I first downloaded 1 1/2-ish years ago!

I'm not a current Android user, myself, but just to add some fuel to the Android fire... There are currently some relatively cheap Android phones on the market that are pretty rugged and some are opting to buy them to use as a dedicated GPS with no plans of using as a phone. I now have a spare iPhone because of an upgrade to the X, but iPhones are not cheap and to buy one with the sole intention of using it as a dedicated GPS is probably not as likely to happen as with an Android. There seems to be an ever growing interest to move away from the traditional GPS/Nav units.

This thread comes to mind in case you haven't seen it yet. If this would take too much time and mean less support for the iPhone platform then forget I said anything as I'm selfishly more interested in the iPhone dev. :evil

Yeah... getting more and more Android requests. However I'd have to hire someone to do this for me. I don't have the financial means at this time, but more importantly I don't have the time to guide this person (or persons) without it taking time away from the iOS big update. I do want to go to Android... but it's going to be after the big update is finished in June/July. So... we're talking next motorcycle season.

I understand completely. Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to giving Scenic another go this season. I admittedly haven't used it much in awhile, but the easier methods of adding routes and now having a dedicated iPhone to use it on has renewed my interest.

So, I hit the road Friday and forced myself to stay with Scenic's routing. I did not turn on the voice, didnt want to waste the credit. It stayed pretty much true to my route, but whenever there were deviations, it took forever for it to reroute properly and drop the "Make U-Turn". There was one point where a bridge was out, so a detour had to be made, and if I had not known the area, it would have been very frustrating. I was 3/4 the way through the detour before Scenic caught on and rerouted. At the end of the day, I had to cut short the trip and take a shorter route home. I ended up having to just kill the routing, as it never picked up I was skipping the points. Now, I did cut nearly 30 miles off the planned route, but only 1 waypoint. But, I never did see a "Skip Waypoint" come up (which would be nice to have to quickly allow a waypoint to be dropped on the fly).

Other than spending an hour with a microscope once I imported the route from Furkot, Scenic did well enough when I stuck with the route.

Deckyon is that gpx file the one you created on Furkot or an output version from Scenic?

Ah, Okay. That explains the lack of waypoints which I thought could be problematic for any routing app attempting to stay true to your original route.

Hey Guido. Scenic has started crashing when I press Start Trip or Resume Trip on my iPhone. It does this whether I've created a new route or if I try to navigate one of my favourites. Any suggestions, please?

What is your iPhone model, memory, iOS version, Scenic ver? How many other apps do you have open in the background? If you close all other apps, and only run Scenic, does it do the same thing?
