Scorpa and Yamaha

    Yeah. He passed through here last Monday. Nice fellow. I passed on the bike due to some paperwork issues, and a lingering reluctance to part with that much cash. He's returning through here tomorrow but I have no way to reach him unless he calls me. So - we'll see.

    Classic dillema - I want the bike but not for that price. And the owner, being an old school Southern Colorado gentleman, priced it as he thought it was worth and I don't suspect he'll budge much more.

    I know the owner and rode that bike.It is a very sweet little bike!

    That works out to a little over $5100 US, which with the long ride seat and tank is a better deal than the one I was looking at over here (except for this one over here had the electric start - oh boy). And it seems like it would be a fun toy for hard trails and dinking around at trials and whatnot.The engine is supposedly dead reliable, easy to maintain, and parts are everywhere. The chassis looks top flight, especially if its the racing model with the hydraulic clutch and tubeless tires, which it probably is. But, yeah, it's a lot of money. But also, being somewhat rare, and apparently desirable, it would probably hold a good measure of its value, even if you beat it up a bit. Maybe see if he'd come down closer to $5500 NZ.

    I picked up one of these bikes last spring and I gotta say it's about the most fun bike I've ever owned. Bought it to learn basic trials technique, but it's a ton of fun to just fart around on in the woods.

    My local GG dealer says there will be a couple of the 125 GG Randonne's in the country next week price will be $5,549.00 good news!.

    I offroad tested it as well as the scorpa 125 4strokes and I can tel that for trial purpose the scorpa feels lighter than the randonnè.
    The randonnè comes with better components than the scorpa. Especially the clutch components looks cheap on the scorpa. But still I prefere the handling of the scorpa. The gasgas is still good to practice easy trials. But don't expect to climb big rocks!
    I also wish they put a 250cc engine instead on those bikes which has been a perfect ratio weigth/power.

    The fact that the Gas Gas has a Chinese made motor, isnt something that gets shouted from the rooftops.

    As far as I have been able to ascertain (and believe me, I've been looking into this a lot recently), the engine in the current GasGas Randonne and the current 2012 model Scorpa TY125F (European model) is basically a [licenced?] copy of the original Yamaha 123cc engine you find in the TTR125 - ie. with an electric starter fitted - but it is not made by Yamaha at all.

    However, I also understand that for 2013, GasGas at least will be offering the Randonne with a bigger bore (possibly an aftermarket kit, either dealer or factory fitted) which I imagine will be the same as the 163cc kit currently available for the existing/earlier Yamaha-engined Scorpa's, and which was basically the same as factory fitted to the TY-F200.

    Now that, with it's street legal lights and an e-starter could very well make the perfect trail/play/dual-sport bike?

    ps. Away from the factory/dealer offerings, another option is that in Europe at least, the Yamaha Trailway comes as a 125cc - so presumably they share the same bottom end/crankcases? (which I have yet to have confirmed) - If so, then I imagine fitting a TW200 or even a XT225 engine into the Scorpa or GasGas frame shouldn't be too much of a stretch - as long as the head/carb and ancillaries fit into the space available...

    I only kind of talked to importer about 4 - 5 weeks ago, at the KC Trials meet... He had one of the randonee, anyone could test ride (the 125 that is).

    I asked, because in the back of my head I thought neater than old reflux's and with electric start maybe the wife could ride it, and we could use it in town instead of the car...

    But, He said to make the bike street legal in the USA, it has to undergo stringent EPA certification, which costs upwards of 15-20 Thousand dollars... So at the time of the discussion, it didn't sound like you could tag one, in the foreseeable future. I then moved on and watched other stuff going on in the area.

    But, as they always say, Consumers decide what will be and what goes the way of billions of other failed to sell ideas, I would imagine if there was enough bikes to be sold in the USA for such an endeavor as the certification, it could be done. I bet if they sell 50 of these a year (IMHO a LOT to sell), that means each bike would have to just have about $400 added to the price tag? or absorbed as "overhead" for all gasgas models that already are too high (like everything else) because of the friggin weak dollar!

    Yes, it is crazy... I was chatting to Adrian at Lewisport recently about exactly the same thing... what is so stupid is that this bike meets all the current European emissions legislation already, so you'd think they could just accept that? (ok, maybe not in CA, but everywhere else...)

    He said he doubted it would [ever] be 50 state compliant, and was certainly not intending to sell them as street legal in CA... however, I know other states have more lenient rules regarding registering dual-sport machines (I DS'ed a Honda XR650R in Nevada at the end of 2007 for example, fitted a lighting kit and got it inspected at the DMV - done.) - so what is to stop anyone getting one of these and registering it yourself - inspected in Arizona or Utah for example? - especially as it has ALL the street legal lighting and other dual-sport equipment fitted from the factory!

    PS. I have a Honda TLR200 back in the UK - like you say, this is essentially the modern equivalent!
