SE dies sporadically - fuel pump? fuel line connector QR?

    Did a big DS ride with some friends a few weeks ago. We ended up getting some gas out of my bike on a longer leg of the ride by unclipping the fuel line QR and pressing on the internal button so that we could pump some gas out of the tank. Hit the on/off button a few times, fuel pump pumped gas into our bottle and off we went.

    riding to work last week, the bike started to run on one cylinder, then stopped all together. Pull into a side street and checked the fuel cap (new fuel cap) but no pressure release as I unscrewed it and plenty of fuel (8 gallon safari tank). I checked the fuel line connector and it looked like I never put it all the way back together. Pulled it apart (it wasn't fully seated), and plugged it back in till I heard/felt the click of it connecting, and it fired right up. off to work.

    So riding yesterday, I had the same symptoms where it started to run on one cylinder for 100yards or so, then cut off completely. I pulled over, checked the connector and it was connected fine but I disconnected it and put it back together and it fired right up. Any ideas if these are the symptoms of a fuel pump going back or is there maybe just something I didn't get straight on the first time I connected it back on. Or do these connectors go back?

    I rode maybe 50 miles or so between the time I put the connection back together correctly, and the second occurrence. After getting it running again, I rode about 30 miles of pavement, single track and some whoops/jumps/berms chasing a 9 year old around a small "track" on a 110. lol. No problems.

    Bike is an 07 950 SE, just turned over 10k miles on the clock. safari tank with new gas cap (venting fine) and checked the fuel taps and everything is good there as well.

    I doubt the disconection, reconnection the second time was the fix. Next time just shut off the bike and wait a minute. If it starts afterwards and ryns then it might be the pump starting to go. Then I would take a look at the points on the pump. If you havent replaced the pump before, you are due.

    My SE fuel pump points went bad around 10,000 miles. It will give you a warning like you mentioned . . . Then, it will not work at all. Get new points or Dr. Beans solid state unit.

    I changed the points on my SM at 8,000 miles (PM) . . . Looks like it had another 2K left in it. All the wear was on the top point:

    ...I agree. My vote is for the Dr. Beans upgrade. It's been very reliable for me so far. It's an easy fix and provides a lasting result.

    Whatever you do, heed the warning you are getting before you get stuck in BFE.

    Buy a Dr Bean Kit. = Fuel Problems gone forever.

    Yes the quick connect fitting can be a pain in the arse to reconnect.

    The fuel pump is exactly the same pump on my Africa Twin., Plus its the same on a ZZR 600.

    +1 on the DR Bean Kit.

    Like it better than the Facet since it fits in stock location and no moving parts since it used an electronic eye.

    Did that to mine when converted to carbs.

    Best money ever spent.

    Just looked for and found dr beans upgrade. http://www.lc8.nl/download/fuelpump manual.PDF

    I think I have a spare Facet in my garage, ill have to check.

    Jeff, I think my Adventure is due for the same thing. Running like crap this weekend, it kept wanting to stall ... Backfiring and the smell of fuel. Coming home down hwy60 from Two Wheels of Suches was not pleasant at all.

    Acme has new points in stock so i'm going to go that route for a temporary fix, then research a bit more into the Mikuni. It seems to be one option that has very few failures if you locate the pump in the right place and do the plumbing correctly.

    my buddy steve also has a mikuni but hasn't mounted his yet either. That way we can carry a spare and share it between the two of us on rides. lol. :)

    flux i'll keep you posted on outcome and what it looks like in the pump.

    What Hodgo said. The Dr Bean kit works.

    While you are working on the bike might be worth giving the ignition switch a clean as well.
