Kind of a long story about a crazy weekend...
I've been literally glued to my computer coordinating all things "LAPTOP SHERPAS" for the impending Cambodia ride. I love San Cristobal but I really needed a some new scenery. So I asked my friend Adriana if she wanted to come with me to the beach...I still had a lot of work to do but I really wanted to go to the beach, so my plan was to work in the morning and evening and enjoy afternoons lounging on the beach with cervesas and shrimp cocktails. After a short discussion we settled on two locations. One was a few small beach communities near Tonala, MX and the other was Comitan. Comitan is not near the beach but she told me she was looking for a reason to go visit her friend and a magical garden they have been building for the last 10+ years. So we flipped a coin. Little did I know how that coin flip would impact our weekend or even our lives. The coin laded on Comitan. Off to Comitan we went.

3 Hours later we meet Fabiola. Adriana and Fabi had been school friends many many years ago. They had much to catch up on and honestly I was catching about %15 percent of their conversation...as my Spanish is about as good as my taco making skills. Before I knew it we were in the car heading down the mountain towards the coast...as that point I asked, "Hey, Where are we going?"...El Chiflon they said...later I would see the largest and most powerful waterfall I have EVER stood in front of. Heres the vid

That night we were shooting some landscape star photography when I heard a loud helicopter coming towards us from all directions...At first I thought it was just the mezcal talking to me then I felt the earth begin to move under my feet. We were in a full on earthquake...it lasted for more than a minute and soon after we found out there was an 8.1 earthquake with an epicenter about a hundred miles away. At that point all I could think was what the people on the coast were experiencing. Depending on the type of earthquake the coast could have recieved a very large Tsunami. Adriana and I agreed that fun, off the cuff coin toss could have very well saved our lives. Later we would find our that the towns we were planning to stay in was evacuated but due to a landslide the roads were impassable. Luckily there was no Tsunami only damage from the Quake. Here is a photo taken minutes before the quake hit Comitan.

Some photos from Largatero Mexico! A great place to explore! Notice the corners of the pyramids curving downward...very interesting.

You may have covered this but what is the PVC pipe thing in this picture? I have been using it as my background at work meetings and now there is a pool on what its purpose is.

Im interested in what others think it is!! LOL!!

HAHAHA I get that question all the time...So I know my design is working well! It's a camera rig. Really helps get those smooth motion shots handheld. For this ride I knew I would be doing a lot more filming and I needed something no one would want to steal...it would also need to be durable and inexpensive. I made that out of PVC in about 20 minutes. You are looking at it upside down...the part that sticks up in the middle is a handle/stabilizer and rotates 360... I generally press against my head or chest for a 3rd point of contact. There is a bolt threaded on the top (in the pic) which goes into the camera. After about a month on the road, I noticed that if I strap everything in this configuration it actually helps lock everything together and keep the top bag from moving around when Im riding those long stretches of rough off road.

    WHO WON THE POOL??

No one won the pool. Notable ideas were a 3rd leg centerstand/sidestand thing. I device for holding your gear packaged together (Sort of a winner) or something that converts something into a table, and a fishing rig (how does that work?) Thanks for the info, I will break it to them.

I was honestly waiting all weekend to hear the results and now I'm bummed! My videos must still be too shaky!

Well this happens but I'll be honest...Its no reason to hate everyone...maybe just bust a few skulls ;) FYI, in the end they were running away from me...after a 2x4 to my face.

A saying comes to mind...no good deed goes unpunished... All the good you do, and this is what you get? Kind of sad eh?

Videos are great, they are all engineers and look at things a little differently. On did assume that the center may be able to pivot and was not necessarily glued in place. They didn't watch the videos, They just saw my screen background at a meeting.

Sorry about your bad experience in San Cristobal, and bravo for your attitude. Glad you are staying out there.

Yeah, life isnt fair...I see this is a reminder, I'm a target and even though I have a lot of friends here, this is not my home and some people dont want me here. I kinda feel bad for the 4 guys who jumped me...they snuck up behind me a hit me in the face with a 2x4...but thats the only hit I took...my memory is foggy but my knuckles tell me a story that they will think twice before trying that again. I dont condone violence but I will defend myself...I think most would feel the same.

Chiapas Mexico is AMAZING!! There are so many historic areas to explore...with no one around. Makes me wonder how these people lived? What they enjoyed, etc...Love Mexico!
