SUBJECT TO FAVORABLE WEATHER - MAY BE RESCHEDULED IF THE WEATHER IS CRAPOLA

As many of you would know by now, our much loved riding buddy, and all around dirt-bike queen - Melissa - is headed to the Finke Desert Race in June.
Now, you may not be aware that she is funding the trip herself, and that the expenses for such an entry run very high indeed. Many thousands of dollars in fact.

A few years ago, Mel was seriously injured in an accident with a drunk driver. Her fight to walk again would have been effort enough, but now she runs Tri-athalons and races dirt bikes!!! We are very proud of her, and are keen to help her realise her dreams.

So we, her friends would like to show our support by offering the

'Send Mel to Finke' Introduction to Enduro skills ride and BBQ!!

This ride is for everyone, but it's especially for newer riders who would like to step up from Grade 1 riding, and have a go at some Grade 2 and 3 terrain, at an extremely easy pace, and with total support from more experienced riders.
I encourage the chicks to get on this one too, all skill levels are welcome.

    THE PLAN:

We will have discussions and demonstrations of basic enduro riding skills, such as:
Body positioning (riding standing up etc)
    Slow riding
    Emergency braking on gravel
    Balance
    Water crossing
    Riding in deep sand
How to tackle rocky hills and more.
Also some handy hints for preparing your bike, maintenance, handling the bike when in tight situations. All the stuff it usually takes months to pick up... the hard way!

After the ride, we will put on a BBQ snag sizzle and some light beers and soft drinks.

So come along, grab some skills, have a great social ride day with no pressure at all, meet our very own lady racer, enjoy some food, a drink and some great company.

All we ask is that you make a donation of around $15 towards Mel's entry and support fees.

Here she is in action, thanks to B1 for the video:

AS WITH ALL OUR RIDES, YOU SHOULD RIDE AT A PACE THAT YOU FEEL IS SAFE. YOU SHOULD NEVER ATTEMPT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH, AND YOU SHOULD SEEK ADVICE OR HELP IF UNSURE.

The sand part of Finke is easy, its the whoops that wear you down, bloody hard on you. Tell Mel to watch a Finke movie it will give her an insight. If she can,t get hold of one PM me and I will post it to you.But I would want it back. Shouldn,t be too much water although it was raining down as far as Deep Well this week.

Rider fitness is critical for sure.. But skills training in glass house isn't really ideal. My advice is Get Mel to join a Mx club and smash whoops. Also do plenty of speed conditioning. You gotta teach the brain to react at high speed.

Find some deep sandy river/creek beds and flog yourself

Get a good dampener get your suspension set up specific for the task.

    Good luck Mel.

You said in your intro 4.5 hrs across the desert to Finke, actually the cut off time is 4 hrs. If you take longer you cannot race back to Alice, so you need to average about 60 kmh for the whole distance to finish in time. To average 60 you need to do some fairly high speeds in the good spots, you also have to allow for 2 fuel stops.

I want Mel to do what she wants, go girl.

    My view

    It's a precedent.

If it is training with payment attached, then it should be vendors.

If it is a recognised charity (ie charitable tax status, helps a whole lot of people, QLd floods etc) then I am OK with it being here.

    It seems a mix.

Do we want a whole lot of I want to race this race, give me some cash type of request here? I want money to ride here threads that soley benefit an individual.

Should I start a Give me money so I can go to the OCR, I'm cute and I will take lots of photos thread?

    edit typo.

If it's a business activity then there's all kinds of red tape and insurance considerations bla bla bla..

As a newbie to the awesome community that Strummer has been so graciously and selflessly cultivating through the giving of his time, I'm more than happy to give something to the group in support by way of my money.

If any man or woman doesn't want to give of their money (whether they be able to or not), they will surely receive the same benefit of this event as anyone who decides to give some moolah.

It's not a charity nor is it a service in exchange for some kind of benefit, Strummer is giving of his time for free as always :clap

I'll wander on back to the peanut gallery now :D
