My buddy and I are planing a ride in April. We both have Basecamp. I'm the one who always does the route planning, but I want him to be able to view and modify my routes. He lives in UT, I live in TN.

We are both novices when it comes to BC. Can someone educate me on sending a route I've already made to him, so he can view it on his PS using BC?

    Thanks.

You would get better response if you posted this in "layin down tracks" section

To share a route, track and waypoints created in BC, you can use 'Export'. A *.gpx file will result that you can send to him. Highlight the 'List' in BC which contains the route, then click on 'File' at the top of BC, then slide down to 'Export' and place it anywhere you want. The file will take the 'List' name with a *.gpx file extension.

Your buddy will use 'Import' to bring it into BC.

If you want your buddy to see exactly what you're planning, you can also publish to Garmin Adventures from Basecamp.

If you're going to share routes, it would be best if you each had the same route-able map releases...

Good point....forgot about that.....he only has Mapsource 2008 on his PC, and I have 2008,2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013! So that would be a problem....either use the 2008 (old maps maybe)....or just take a screen shot of my route. Or, investigate the GPX solution someone kindly suggested above......I wonder how that would work.....

The real issue is what mapset you each have on your computers and GPS devices. For example, do you have City Navigator North America maps, and if so, what version? Maybe this is what you meant when you referred to Mapsource. You can run into some problems if you create a route using, say CNNA 2013.x, and he gets it, imports it and has a different version of City Navigator maps running on his PC/GPS. Ideally, you'd each have the identical mapset.

Deek, tell your buddy to let the moths out of his wallet and get the lifetime maps update for his old CN set. :deal

You guys should really run on the newest map set if you possibly can.

This is essential especially if one of you has an older map. For instance if you have CNNA 2913.1 and your friend has CNNA2010.1 the maps will not match entirely.

He will have to redraw or retrace the map to be accurate in his version of CNNA.

I think by the time we get to CNNA 2913.1, continents will no longer be in the same place, let alone roads. :lol3

It has probably been said, but if you convert the routes to tracks and use these to navigate, you will get around all the issues with different types and versions of the various mapset products.

You will have to filter the tracks down to 500 or 800 points for some GPS units.

I know his eyes would start to glaze over as soon as I say "i'm sending you a gpx file....just import that into your mapping software." A techno-geek he is not!:eek1

I have not played with tracks yet, but did a trip last week and plan to do so this week.

One of the reasons I stick with Mapsource...I find it a lot more user friendly.
