Hondo, '82 FXRS, is back on the road with a new engine........ well, actually a lightly used engine pulled from a barn find.
Getting ready to do Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago and back!

I saw a brilliant 76 or 78 Shovel here in Amarillo Sunday....it had been the riders'father's bike. A beautiful FLH, with many special small details....he said it had about 500,000 miles on it.

That's potentially gorgeous . . . . but that rear wheel - guard seems just wrong. Wheel too far forward, shocks too long - could even be the tyre profile? I dunno, but that's the only thing I would try to change.

Looks to be FLH shocks on an FX..........fender and struts appear to be correct.

I just picked this one up last night:
    MINENOW.jpg
'77 FXE, needs a little minor maintenance, but she runs pretty solid.

WOW somewhere along the way a lot of $$$$ was spent. Mounting a split tank dash is an adventure, take your time & un hook the battery so you don't let the smoke escape the wires on the switch. Good luck it's bitchin

Im curious how many Shovelhead owners here would never part with their bikes? Or would you, had the chance arise, trade it for a modern Harley?

If I were to off my shovel, the newest I'd go is evo. Owned a TC already, and while it was nice it had no soul.

    btw, I have a 68 shovel and a 97 sporty. Both have it...soul.

7 years ago, all I had was a 4 year old 2007 Road Glide. I still have it, and ride the hell out of it.
4 years ago, I picked up a 1999 Dyna Super Glide. After some engine mods, it's quite the little hot rod.
A couple weeks ago, I picked up a1977 FXE. Starting to see a trend, I'm buying older, not newer. :D I'm in the process of cleaning some shit up, and making it mine. This is the bike I used to drool over 35 years ago.

The only bike of the 3 that I will sell or trade is the newer one. I'll likely get a new Road Glide in a couple years to replace it. The other 2 are keepers.

FX Shocks are open spring with the small cover on top bolt, FL Shocks have full cover like those in the pix. I never referenced shock length in my post. I believe my statement is correct.......

Re: Shovelheads, where have they gone?

When their value bottomed brokers quietly scarfed up tons of them and shipped them overseas by the container full. The rest of them are hanging out in sheds and garages.

The same thing happens to Triumphs and Nortons and BSA's when when the dollar is weak and the pound is strong.
