    Claude should answer that , as he has before but a Ford engineer I know told me exactly what Claude did.
    Leading arms ride better and the majority of touring sidecars in production use them, trailing is more HP and less problematic, I've had 3 trailing and 1 leading the leading was the EZS Summit rode like a big German sedan and caster increased as it was compressed.

    I reckon there might be a reason why VW beetle front suspension was (and still is) used widely for off-road buggies and cars.

    So I was figuring I'd stick with that trailing arm design/principle when building mine (still gathering info/data and haven't started yet).

    Now you guys have me all confused

    VW front ends, AKA: Beam front end. They are not commonly used in off road in new builds. Except for a couple of limited classes, A-arm front ends are now the off road buggy standard.

    I had the privilege to co-drive in Baja Bob Gordon's Chenowth for the 1st 4 years of the NORRA Mexican 1000 in which we won 3 of those 4 years! Here is a pic of me & Butch Arciero in Bob"s "beam car" known as "Betsy":

    I wasn't implying they are the standard/rage. Just that they are still used and surely wouldn't be if it wasn't a good/decent design?

    This isn't rocket science ! Your way over thinking this ! Just build a Ural clone DMC has succeeded with that philosophy.
    Why do you want to build your own ? Is this going to be a square tube, no miters ,butt joint obviously no structural welding experience deal ?
    I put people and things I care about in my sidecar and haul them all over hell, I like to think its well built .
    Good weldors are worth the money !

    Like I said limited classes (classes 12, 1600, & 9) still use them but those classes are dying out rapidly, I haven't seen a Class 9 entry in Baja for several years. Most popular limited class is Class 10 that uses A-arms and Ecotech motors. State of the art in Class 1 (unlimited). I was the "Co-dog" with Terry Householder in this car for 2 years. A-arms LS-7 motor with 6 speed sequential Albins transmission, no clutch, uses a torque converter instead. Car got a little sketchy at 125mph across the desert as air would get under the front end causing it to lift enough to make the steering scary light!     I rode a Ural with a sidecar and can't say I cherish the experience.

    As to why build one? I'm getting older and the knees are making it harder and harder to go off-road. So I want a sidecar for more stability and safety. I was leaning towards this type of design:

    My ideal requirements:
    • frame as light as possible
    • allow bike to lean (better for off-road riding and can still use the pegs for better control)
    • wheel on sidecar probably 18" for compatibility with the bike (e.g. tube/tyre size, bearings etc).
    • sidecar room to be used for fridge, fuel, etc.
    • sidecar wheel intermittently driven by hydraulic pump (will help in sand when going slow)
    • wheelbase (bike/rack width) about the same, but slightly less than a 4x4 (wheel rut compatibility)
    I haven't seen anything for sale out there that fits the bill

    As I stated above, I built the DR' leaner specifically so he had the ability to lock it to create a rigid/conventional sidecar as and when required.

    The bloke is more than happy with it.
