Last week i received a private message from a member of the Adventure Rider, informing that he would be in the island for one day, and that he would rent a motorcycle in ANC MOTO RENT (http://www.motorent.ancmotorent.com/) to ride and to try to find some of the places he had already seen on my pictures posted here,
Of course he also would like to meet local Adventure Riders and ride with us, and that was what ir happened :clap
His name is Cordell, i think Cordless here on ADVRider, and i saw immediately that he was very nice and sociable.
The comunication between him and the group started very well and it was always something very natural during the day.
The meeting point, in Ponta Delgada city, in front of the Hotel Marina:

Our goal for this one day ride was to show Cordell some of the main touristic points of the island.
It was a hard mission, but we would try to do our best :evil
Ok, has for the first places we visit, we went to Sete Cidades, that is located in an volcano, that is "sleeping" for many years now.

Experts say it's no longer in activity, so we hope :D
And the first stop on the belvedere Vista do Rei with one of the most known views over Sete Cidades.
    Cordell in the photo.

Passing in the center of Sete Cidades, to show Cordell this small vilage and for him to take a closer look of the beautiful lagoons.

Nothing uncommon in this island, just a horse in the road and it's owner trying to get him to the inside of the stable.
We helped him and it worked :clap

The next stop was the north of the island, Ribeira Grande city, where our goal was to show Cordell the wonderful Lagoa do Fogo.
Lagoa do Fogo, or in english, lagoon of fire, is another volcano a "sleep", but not extinct. It has volcanic activity and experts say that i will blow some day. it can be in a year, 5 years, next century, no real dates for sure :D

And the photo with Lagoa do Fogo behind:

Next stop was in Furnas, another volcanic part of the island, with some things that reminded Cordell Yellowstone Park.

Cordell got the chance to watch the withdrawal of boiled food from the earth.
Here in sao Miguel island, it's a tradition to put food inside a pot and insert the pot inside a hole, and after 5/6 hours the food is cooked and with a very special taste :evil

For lunch we had this kind of food and i think Cordell liked a lot, especially the blood sausage :lol3

After lunch in Furnas, we went to Povoacao, that was the first spot in the island of the first inhabitants.
In Povoacao this ride got a little more adventurous, with us taking Cordell to some off road trails.
This rainbow was just waiting for us, what a luck!

Some water crossing, always nice to cool down:rofl

Nothing like riding in a very closw contact with nature :clap

After Povoacao, we entered in another off road trail where a strange thing happened to my motorcycle, suddenly the KTM started loosing power and throttle response and stoped.
after stoping, there was no batery signal, which got me worried :eek1
I thought it could only be something wrong with the batery, probably one of the batery cables not correctly connected.
    Had to dismount some things...

And there it was, one of the cables was not connected:

After connecting again, the KTM came to life again and we continued our riding.
Yeah, we are back in business :clap

At this point we were at Tronqueira, a very cool place for off road riding, especially for big motorcycles :evil
Cordell got the chance to try the KTM 950 ADV of my friend, and i think he loved the bike

    Stoping in Tronqueira belvedere:

    Kodak moment :D

Than we went to one of the highest point of Nordeste, the top of Bartolomeu mountain, where the view is fantastic :evil

Cordell was very lucky, because these hight point of the island normally can have lot's of fog. But today it wasn't the case :clap

Cordell asked from us a little more of off road riding, so we took him to Graminhais, where the trails are made from gravel.

In Graminhais another fantastic view for Cordell :clap

    My friend Miranda:

And Cordell with me (Bruno) and Francisco:

Some more off road riding :clap

The day was almost ending, and sunset was starting to show off, so we rode towards another belvedere, where we believed it would be possible to watch a nice sunset.

    Almost done with Graminhais :1drink

And going to Salto do Cavalo belvedere to watch the sunset:

And we were right, we caught a beautiful sunset over Furnas valley:

Everyone want's a photo with this sunset :rofl

What a day for Cordell :clap

Despite the day was ending, we still had time to visit a very old tea factory, where Cordell tasted some local tea, brought by the Japonese to the island many years ago.

Not only Cordell loved the tea, but also loved the old tools and machines used to produce tea.
Vistiting this old tea factory, Gorreana, is like taking a trip back in time.
Well, after tea, we were almost done, mainly because there was day light any longer :cry
We left Cordell at the hotel and said goodbye.

This was the route of the ride with Cordell in Sao Miguel island - Azores:

In short, it was very nice to meet someone of another country and especially someone from Adventure Rider.
Cordell was a real nice guy and we were pleased with his presence in our island and ride.
We hope to ride with him again, in Sao Miguel or even in the United States of America.
We hope Cordell enjoyed as much as we did and if we could we would have done a lot more.
Thank you Cordell for searching for us and for being our new friend.

    See you!!! :clap

Bruno, thanks for posting all the great photos and the narration. I confess I wasn't quite sure where I was on the island at all times. The map helped.

The volcanic lakes were stunning. The furnas cooking in the ground was great. The blood sausage was a treat from my childhood.

This was one of the best days of riding I've ever spent. I gave up on an Iron Butt ride in New Mexico to join the crew on Sao Miguel for this ride. In 307 kilometers we probably turned more corners than any Iron Butt I have ever seen.

I will remember last Saturday's ride for a long time to come. I cannot thank my new friends enough for hosting me on this ride.

The ride was great but not for everyone. Here are some reasons NOT to ride with Bruno, Paul, Miranda, Francisco and crew (I hope I got the names correct).

    You prefer to:

    -- ride the speed limit
-- never spin your rear wheel
-- eat fish rather than blood sausage
-- stay on the divided motorway
    -- ride level ground
-- see only what the ordinary tourists see
-- never annoy the villager with your moto noise
-- ride for no more than 90 minutes per day
    -- drink only Lipton Tea
-- avoid the smell of natural hot springs sulphur
    -- ride with boring people
-- ride with people who know how to loosen a KTM battery protector bolt
-- ride with people you would not like to consider friends
    -- keep your clothes clean.

This ride was a triumph of ADVrider. Without this site I would not have gotten in touch with Bruno and Crew.

Oh, and I got to ride a Transalp all day long. That's a rare bike in the US

Wish I had seen this thread. Just returned from the Island last night after a 2 week stay. I know the paved roads well as I have visited the island several times as my wife was born there and her parents still have a home there.

Did rent a bike on a previous visit and the riding is just amazing. I only rode on paved roads but did several of the roads you did.

Will have to contact you prior to my next visit.
