Thanks guys !

Friday I'm off to Tajikistan. So I'm almost sure that the next update here will be when I'm back home.

Our bikes are on their way to Bishkek now. We'll fly there and ride our bikes to Tajikistan for 2 weeks. We have in plan Bartang Valley and Lake Zorkul.

so, until we are back I hope to put some pictures and updates from the road on our fb page: https://www.facebook.com/wildwalk.ro

@live2ridetahoe - have good luck on the road and good weather !

    Cheers

I was looking at the pic and thinking ... OK, he has 10cm of ground clearance ... before he has even sat on the bike. It much be 5cm with him on it. You want to be taking it easy with that sort of load and clearance

    Day 25, Wednesday, 7 August 2013

We say goodbye to this Mongolian very kind family and go on. The next meeting point is Moron city, where we’ll have lunch. There are 160 km and many passes up to there.

From Wikipedia “When travelling, it is custom to stop and circle an ovoo three times in clockwise direction, in order to have a safer journey. Usually, rocks are picked up from the ground and added to the pile. Also, one may leave offerings in the form of sweets, money, milk, or vodka. If one is in a hurry while travelling and does not have time to stop at an ovoo, honking of the horn while passing by the ovoo will suffice”.

As I was there making some pictures a car came and circled the ovoo 3 times, and after this it climbed the hill in the picture above.

Arrived in Moron I stop to check my mobile. I have a sms telling me the restaurant where my friends are awaiting me.

After having lunch we go to put some benzin. I also have to add some motor oil to my Shineray Mustang and to tight the chain. Towards Lake Hovsgol we have 100 km of asphalt.

After another 30 km of good gravel road we arrive at Toilogt yurt camp. They are full but it is better because there was very expensive. In 8 km we find another good looking yurt camp where we stay. Unfortunately we arrive too late and the kitchen is closed. And as today is Wednesday they don’t sell alcohol. We meet here an American guy from Boston; he’s a university professor and a musician (http://www.bradfordgleim.com/).

    Day 26, Thursday, 8 August 2013

The day starts well, it is sunny outside. We take some photos around the camp.

And after this we go to Toilogt camp. We eat something at the restaurant and after that we go to a little excursion by boat to the other shore of the lake where there are some reindeers.

Toilogt camp as seen from the boat

I feel sorry for the reindeers. They live well in the high altitude villages in the west of the lake, but some families come here in the summer for the turists.

So we go back to our camp and relax

    Day 27, Friday, 9 August 2013

Bogdan and Andrei go to a horse ride. I stay here to relax.

We leave the camp in the afternoon and go to a hotel in Moron. Being very hungry we order more than we can eat.

    Day 28, Saturday, 10 August 2013

We leave Moron in the morning. It is raining light, but the roads are very slippery. The way east is being asphalted, but there is still a lot of work. So we have to ride along the way.

We meet each other a few times

The last river we cross in Mongolia

There is almost evening when we finish with the offroad. From now on, there is only asphalt. We have another 70 km to the first town where we can sleep.

We stop in Bulgan. At the central hotel it is full. We find something else close to it, and we have the worst accommodation here in Mongolia.

    Day 29, Sunday, 11 August 2013

I leave the first one to take some advance. I go almost with no stop. Around Darkhan there is smoked fish. It is delicious. The next stop for me is Suhbaatar. I stop at a gas station close to the town and I call the border officer from Olgii. He calls some border officer from here and we meet in 20 minuts. I want to sell my bike with 100 Eur, she offers me 100$. Anyway I have no other choice so it’s good. After this I go to a hotel where I wait for the guys. They are a little late because they went to a service to change the front wheel bearing for Andrei’s bike.

    Very hungry we go out.

We find a good looking restaurant and, like usual, we order too much food. In the night I have some problems with falling asleep.

From today I’m a pillion on Bogdan’s bike.

    Today’s destination is Ulan Ude.

I like Ulan Ude the most (out of the 3 towns visited in Siberia: Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan Ude). It is the liveliest town.

    Day 31, Thursday, 13 August 2013

We visit the Buryat Republic museum. They have an English speaking guide there. It is very interesting. Here is a religious book; very old (I don’t remember details).

After lunch we go towards Irkutsk. Along Baikal Lake, in the villages, we find delicious smoked fish.

Me and Bogdan, we were wishing to put the tent on the Baikal shore. This is not easy to do because of the railroad. But in Babushkin we find a place. I’ve heard of a legend that if you take a bath in Baikal Lake you gain a few years of life. I wonder how much you gain if you only put your feet into it.

    Day 32, Wednesday, 14 August 2013

We arrive to Irkutsk and go straight to the meeting point with Kajman to leave the bikes. After this we take a taxi to Nina. In the evening we celebrate the finish of this trip and think of future plans.

    Day 33, Thursday, 15 August 2013

Today we take a walk in Irkutsk.

Because of our long stop in Moscow airport, we have time to visit the Red Square.

Fantastic photos!!! Which cameras did/do you use? I did Mongolia via Stans in 2011 on a Transalp 600, but my pictures didn't come out half as good as yours. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this rr and let us be part of the adventure. Looking forward to more.

    Thanks guys !

Next RR here on adv will be Tajikistan. If you are eager for a "best of" you can check this album here (unfortunately facebook deteriorates the quality of pictures) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.916846321665996.1073741841.178364595514176&type=1

In Tajikistan I had a crash with my bike. Because I was looking at the wonderful landscape ... (see the attachment)

I'm looking now for SH items on ebay. I've just bought a tachometer. I need a speedometer and a right side top front fairing (gray-black model). If anybody here has these items, please pm me.

ps: Noah, NZ is my favorite country I visited so far.

    Regards,
    Cristian / Bob

    Hi Bob and Christian,
    nice report and good photos!

I am currently researching for my trip next year. Did you simply use OSM for navigation on the Tuva track?

I am currently looking on Google Earth and I can follow a track for a while but this seems to disappear near the lake (Khindigtik Khol) then reappear after. My route would be from the M52 toward Tuva and back as we would then cross into Kazakh later on.... I am pondering whether I map a track using google Earth and save it into our GPS, or simply follow using OMS if this is good enough?

    Your advice welcome :)
