Its been a couple of months now since I was on the road.

I had designs on being in the Himalaya or Andes about now, but a bunch of people asked me if I would be interested in doing part of last year's Sibirsky Extreme trip again, showing them the way ... in particular the bit that always seems to capture folk's imagination, the Road of Bones.

Asking me if I would be interested in going back to Siberia is a bit like asking Bill Clinton if he fancies a roll in the cupboard with a wide eyed intern and a jumbo box of cigars. I know I should say no, but its always so tempting. Just one more time can't hurt, right? :johntm :johntm :hide :hide

    And so I agreed ...

That was over 6 months ago. As I write now, I am in Vladivostok, on the East Coast of Russia, and home to the Russian Pacific Fleet ... in just over 24 hours I will be loading motorbikes onto a ship bound for Magadan.

    Sibirsky Extreme 2010 has begun.

Unlike previous ride reports that were put together after the event, I will try something different this time ... I will go "live".

I will update this initial post with some highlights as they come to hand.

If this latest expedition (the word "trip" will not do it justice! :bow) is anything like the BAM road expedition, there will be a lot of :lurk. Incidentally, I just finished rereading the BAM thread yesterday!

    Needless to say, I'm subscribed!

    Bon courage! :freaky

As recently as 6 weeks ago I had 5 people coming along on the trip – 4 guys and 1 girl. Tiffany Coates (http://www.tiffanystravels.co.uk/) had suggested to me last year I should lead an all girl ride on the Road of Bones and that guys couldn’t be relied upon! As it turns out, that’s what I have now. Surely enough, at the last minute, all the guys pulled out citing a variety of reasons, leaving me with a single female co-rider.

Sherri-Jo Wilkins is my co-rider for the first month and she is an Australian girl with a truck load of travel experience, but is new to doing the travel thing on a motorcycle. She headed off from South Australia about 6 weeks ago, crossed Australia, then rode around both Japan and Korea before we hooked up for the ferry across to Russia.

SJ is riding a KTM 690R.

You can get a lot more info on her and her bike prep on her web site:
www.sherrijowilkins.com ... she is running her own blog there too so hopefully it will match roughly with mine :thumb

I wont redo it, as I have written up this years all new bike prep on the existing bike prep thread ... starting about here ... on page 22 ... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=524638&page=22

The end result is a bike that now has its battery in the sump guard, a set of KTM 640 Adventure forks, KTM 990 low fender, all new X-Tank, is back to white, has an all new rear rack, among other dozens of modifications. It now looks like this:

Oh you're a harsh man Mr Race. :gerg

I think its a form of Russian acupuncture ... trying to reach specific pressure points. I was hoping to do some study in this field myself at some stage.

And here we go with the waiting game again... Why did I click on this, I knew 2 pages would be just the warm up, and it's even worst, you haven't even started the actual trip... :deal

By the way I think the bike looks way better in white. :clap

The plan for this summer is to lead the first tour on the Road of Bones, and to make Sherri Jo Wilkins the first non-russian woman to ride the Road of Bones.

We begin my notes from a hotel room in Sokcho, Korea. An hour before writing I was reunited with my motorcycle. I had last seen it 10 days ago when I dropped it off at James Cargo’s warehouse in Colnbrook just outside London. The last few weeks has seen the bike transformed from the tired old unit that finished last years marathon ride only 2 months ago into a near new, ready to go beast, complete with new paint job.

So ... Korea ... I flew into Seoul a couple of days ago where I have been fantastically looked after by Joon, the Korean biker we had helped on last years Siberian travails. The first night was a chance to catch up with Joon over beer and pizza.

The following morning I indulged in a quality brunch at the local Taco Bell:

My second and final night in Seoul, however was Korean food night, and I was the guest of honour for the local adventure bikers group … guys who share the dream of travelling the world by motorcycle. I put on a slideshow and was treated to fantastic hospitality – and a lot of beer and soju.

The guys (and girls) of the Korean RTW club have asked me to pass on their web page to other foreign bikers passing thru Korea and suggest that you get in touch. Their club is relatively new and are trying to build contacts around the world and would love to meet and help foreign bikers visiting Korea.
