Ahhh, its a pleasure to go on internet these days.
Even more happy to go checking ride reports, and wondering / hoping to see next posts from Colebatch and Terry's adventure.
Seems like doing the trip was the least of its time.
More time takes planning, routing and writing such wast ride into a report.
Thanks for taking time and share it with us guys!

First up - fuel - as you can see, 95 octane in Russia (well in Orenburg) was about 28 rubles per litre (56p/litre : 0.69 EUR/litre : US$ 3.39/US gallon)

Next stop was the car wash. Off Road riding tends to throw mud at the radiator. Clogged radiators dont cool well. It was hot. Fans were on a lot once radiators got clogged with mud. And I like a clean bike ... all good reasons why we pressure washed the bikes regularly (and carefully). This car wash was right next door to a automotive spare parts shop. Cool !!! I love looking at tools, and oils and stuff like that.

Speaking of looking around, it seemed traffic on the main road was backed up

Some way down the road, we found some cafes and fruit sellers:

So we stopped and grabbed brunch.

    With a smile !

Dude, if you could have found this place when you were down the road in Sol Iletsk, you would have lived here. The food was actually very good for regional Russia

Many of you, Tiff included, have no doubt been wondering what its like to see Terry undress. Fortunately, Terry got a bee in his riding jacket, leapt off his bike and began undressing in front of me at a rapid rate, while yelling "bee, bee" and flapping the back of his jacket about:

With that minor emergency out of the way, we could continue:

So far today, the tracks were a bit hazy and vague ...

It was going to be that sort of day on the trails .... some good sections, some vague barely recognisable sections. Having just had a bad bit, we were pleased to see it slowly improving again:

Then you turn the corner onto a nice piece of double track:

    And crank the throttle:

While being careful to keep an eye out for other potential road hazards - this guy seemed shocked at the sight of us and how quickly we were closing in on him and quickly steered the tractor off the trail:

    The track continues:

Get too close to the guy in front and you get a face full of dust !

Turning off a more widely used track onto a more funky track:

I was well aware that the the high speed, open fun we were having out on the steppes was about to end. We were less than two hours ride now from the Ural Mountains ... which offered us something completely different - loads of river crossings.

So with that in mind, I was determined to really enjoy our last few hours on the Russian Steppe:

Terry almost missed a corner as we came into a village, and rather than wait for him, I decided it was his turn to eat my dust:

    The village was sleepy:

This village dog was wise. I had already inadvertently fatally wounded 3 chickens that had tried to run in front of the bike at various times in the trip. He chased the ball, and not the bikes.

From this village, it was a gravel road to the next village.

Terry led the way up the track:

He missed a turnoff, before eventually coming back to meet me at this 2000 year old stone monument, erected by the Scythians, the first powerful steppe nomads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia: (see here for more on the domain of the Scythians ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Scythia-Parthia_100_BC.png)

    . . . . .

This was again part of the trip in 2010 ... then it had looked like this:

Well 2000 year old rocks dont change much in 2 years ... now it looked remarkably similar:

Even the sky looked much the same:

From there it was on to Mednogorsk, our stay for the night. Mednogorsk is in the foothills of the Ural Mountains. This was our last bit of the Russian Steppe:

On the outskirts of Mednogorsk, we stopped to ask some friendly locals directions to our hotel:

After checking into our hotel, we walked past the rail station (behind) to our restaurant:

The restaurant seemed to be hosting some sort of a birthday party ... with a lot of semi-drunk ladies dancing:

They kept badgering us to get up and dance with them. We held out for at least an hour:

Eventually, many beers later, I folded, and had a dance with this tall Bashkir girl:

There was an aerial on your bike. What became of it?

Good RR, by the way. I'm looking forward to the Ural sections.
