I have to work this weekend, and on Monday I'm going to Washington for a dual-sport rally along the Colombia River Gorge. I won't be back until August 4-5.

I think there are two turn offs for Hunter's Valley Road? Take the one called Hunter's Valley Access Road.

there are 2 roads. The one closer to Coulterville is mostly BLM land so no real problem riding out there. The other is mostly private land with BLM land mixed in. Most of that area is old gold and copper mines. There are not many open shafts but they do exist so watch out. There is a cabled off section on the upper road. This area at the top of the hill has crystals scattered around and the road that heads north drops in to the lower road......do what you think is right I guess...

Well so Saturday night I finally got out on the Motor bike. I was going to just dap around Merced but something got into me and I headed out torwards Snelling and then next thing I know i am on the way to Hornitoes. So I thought why not go the very end of Hunters Valley Access Road. For some reason it always takes me two trips to explore a new area. As it was late I thought this would be great for some nice afternoon light photos...What I did not expect when I got to the end was a Mountain Lion. Now I have been face to face with One Mountain Lion once in Utah. I saw his/her eyes and he/she mine, we looked at one another for a minute and both decided it would be better to go our seperate ways. But I actually saw the cat, that was almost about 10 years ago. Last night i did not see the cat, but I am sure I heard the animal, just as I pulled up to the gate and shut the bike down. Something made a definet growling sound and then a pretty scary yelling sound, sounded like a women screaming....then I heard some sort of crashing through the brush below me and then it was gone. After I changed my shorts!!!! I also decided that I would make haste...Anyone know if there are in fact Mountain Lions in that area, I did not think they were that low, but the more I think the more I am certain it was a large cat making the sounds...Well anyway the road to and from the lake is well maintained, a few areas of gullying so to speak but nothing any first time rider could not handle. And only a few places that would perhaps challenge a road bike, I was averaging about 30-35 MPH heading back up and out,
So here are some of the photos I got...

Nice shots, Mr. B. I was exploring that road last week... I think it was Thursday morning... can't remember as summer vacation is clouding my mind and all the days just run together. I rode HV Access Rd and then had lunch in Mariposa. Then I rode the Indian/Slate Gulch roads back into Merced and home.

It was a LONG trip for my DR350... could have easily done it on my vstrom... my butt was longing for the strom there towards the end... but I wanted to try out the "new" bike. I've done a lot of exploring in that area but all of the unpaved stuff was new to me and quite fun.

It would not surprise me if there was a mountain lion out there. You could have surprised a skinny-dipper too, I suppose. :rofl

oh yeah. all over the U.S.
I saw one just north of Oroville several years ago, jumped across the Hiway and only hit the ground one time from one side to the other. Scared the Crapola out of me. They seem to be getting less and less afraid of us humanoids.

The road is not so bad, actually it is in great shape. there are some interesting side roads that shoot off the main road. I did not have time to explore much, time of day and what not...I only saw a couple of vehicles, poking around....I'd join you this weekend but am stuck working in Miami this week. Florida, not springs!

Wish I could go. Gail puts on a great ride. I am amazed at what he could do with his enormous 1200GS... I'm afraid to see what he can do now with his new 800!
