Slow cranking battery,why suck a expesive replacement cost?

    Hi , I have a 2004 R1150r that will start but it seems to just barely crank over.
    Not like my other Triumph or jap bikes that spin right up.
    Is this normal for the boxer engine to sound like this or should I replace the battery?
    I have no history from the seller to go on so I don't know how old it is.
    I been looking on Ebay and this is an expensive battey like a Harley battery.
    Not like a $40.00 new battery for the Suzuki I had.
    Why so much $?

    My friend got a Diehard for his GSA at Kmart. Worked fine for 10,000 3 week trip. Has Sears guarantee.

    Did you try charging it for a while? A lot of guys sell their bikes because they don't ride them. May just need a boost.

    I would take apart and clean all the battery and starter and ground connections,then make sure battery was fully charged.
    Also check fluid level in battery before charging,if it is not sealed type battery and add distilled water to top up if needed.

    This will likely cure a lot of your slow crank issues.

    A boxer does not sound like a jap bike or a triumph when turning over. They sound slower.

    If it does not reset the time on the rider information display it is fine. 2004 is not known for magnets coming loose in the starter.

    Your profile does not tell where you are, but unheated storage and north of the Mason Dixon line and 20w50 oil you will crank slower. If it starts it is fine to ride with that weight. It is recommended for almost all temperatures most of us ride in.


    You can use 5W40 rotella diesel oil in the winter for better starts, as long as not over about 90 or not stuck in traffic a long time where engine oil gets hot.

    Both schools of thought exist here, and both of them get along just fine.

    I once put a 40 dollar autozone atv battery in my 1100 when my sealed one crapped on me in the middle of Missouri... wrong size, opposite terminals... used it for 2 years before replacing and it wasn't even dead yet... ya know, if you're really looking to shortcut and save money... :D

    New used bike........ time for a new battery.

    How much you spend is up to you. But no matter what you get, put on a tender over the winter and it will last you longer.

    I have a tender for the winter. I don't think oil viscosity is my problem at 70 degrees in New England now but it is a thought for the colder season coming.
    Maybe it supposed to start like the sound of my lawn tractor - slow. I was wondering that.
    The batteries I looked at on Ebay were all over a $100.00. I thought that was a lot.
    I will look into a Die Hard at Sears.
    I just don't want to get stuck somewhere and not be able to start.
    What should I do if it won't start and I am far from home. Can it be safely jump started? How?

    Most auto parts parts stores carry MC jumper cables,can also get from Amazon,etc.

    If you decide to replace battery,lots of folks here,including me,like Odyssey batteries.
    Think you need the PC 680,that is most common for the 1100-1150 bikes.

    Still recommend cleaning and checking all connections and grounds due to age,heat,vibration

    My OE Exide lasted about 7 years. The Panasonic I put in was always a tad slower cranking. It lasted about 3 and I was never happy with it and I was never stranded. I just installed a odyssey. Cranks much faster now. You do need to adapt the terminals. My dealer did not have the adapter. got a welder cable end in copper, hammered it flat, bent it into an L, drilled holes, trimmed with hacksaw and file The positive would fit with bending, the ground needed the adapter. Cranks oh so much faster now.

    You're going to need a 19 Ahr battery with lots of CCAs...more the better. Most if us with oilheads go for the Odyssey battery. They are reliable, no maintenance, lots of CCAs and typically last well past other brands. Mine is 5 years old and has never been charged and has never failed to start my '01 GS....NEVER. Jap inline engines have a much different bore-stroke ratio and starter designs and hence spin faster. The boxer is a twin with huge bores comparatively and therefore, the starter sounds much different and also requires more muscle, hence, a bigger battery.

    yep, Odyssey is hard to beat, they have the power & they last. prolly all in my head but I swear my bike even ran better when I put one in.

    as above, does the clock reset to zero when you crank? if so, the battery is weak. if not, then the starter needs a look

    OK, I am going to get the Odyssey battery.
    I have a 2004 BMW R1150r. Do I need an adapter kit and which one do I need?
    I have not taken the tank off to see and would like to be prepared to order the battery and what ever adapter kit I need to put in in one move.

    If your boxer's battery and electricals are healthy, it should start within a crank or two. Your current battery may have a date stamp on it, as to when it was installed, and if it is fewer than 5 years old, it may still be OK. I would have an electrical expert test it, to be sure, before spending money on a new one.

    I just bought a used R1200ST, with no service history, and I had to take the battery right out to find a tiny little date stamp on the bottom. It was only 2 years old.
