. Dave Hall originally made the roll charts. I don't think anybody ever ordered one. GPS is how most of us roll. The GPS is especially useful if you find a road closed and have to re-route.

Our crew just got home safe and sound!
Had a wonderful time on your route and want to say thanks!

Put many pictures and videos of our progress on your Facebook page.
We didn't do it all and will return to pick up where we left off.
    Soon I hope!

    Thanks again,

Jeez how did I just now see this? It was nice chatting with you as well. I'm headed back up in a month with my son for summer vacation. We will be up there for a week in my Jeep doing this route.

We will probably take the blue ridge over to Asheville to see my old girlfriend this time to then head back to Florida. Hopefully this time my fuel range won't be a issue, haha.

Rode this route over the weekend, 5 of us on KTM 690s and a 990. All A & B racers/riders.
05/10 - left the Mississippi Gulf Coast Wednesday around 2, and drove to Suches. Spent the night at TWofSuches.
05/11 - We screwed around, started later than planned, 10? Kickstands up. No Drama, The GPS route is spot on-Thanks Andy!-arrived Ironhorse at about 5.
05/12 - Ironhorse is a great campground, very nice cabins, dinner and breakfast was very good, dry county stop and grab adult beverage if you are thirsty.
Same, screwed around but made it out at about 9, made it to Cherahala Trails at about 5, went into town for dinner, muchies and beer. POURED Rain while we were in the Piggly Wiggly.
Bob ran off the side of the road in a switchback, not sure the name of the road, no injuries, bulldogged the bike down to the other end of the switchback-thanks Cameron-no damage.
Could have been "Ugly!". Cameron - fearing Rain, bailed and rode home to Cumming, GA that evening, got wet. HaHa
05/13 - Up and out at 9, misty, going over a couple of high mountains early on, we were in the clouds, wished I had packed the "No Fog" and "Rain-X", was reminiscent of the Costa Rican Rain
Forest. Kept looking for monkeys and parrots, instead found deer and turkeys. After we crossed the peak, it was a "Bright Sun Shiny Day!" Beautiful riding all the way back to
    TWofSuches.
05/13 evening - We all loaded and departed, good ride, good friends and a beer, or two. Went on over to Cedartown, GA - Home to KTM World to visit long time bud Paul Wright
05/14 - and got the opportunity to ride the "Alta - ElectricBike"... Likely the fastest dirtbike I've ever ridden (I've ridden a few). No Clutch, No Shifter, Twist and Go (and giggle your ass off!).
Perhaps a "Ride Report" on another thread but... gather up your pennies and go demo one, lots of pennies as you'll be trying to figure out how to get another bike in the garage after
riding the "Alta"! Funny... we were trying to "Bench Race", couldn't talk about "Gassinit" and couldn't use the term "BRAAAP"... Juicit? Ampit? Ziitttt?
05/14 pm - had to get on the road back to "The Coast" so... Matt and I had plenty to talk about on the way home. The Alta and The Smokey Mountain 500!

Group of three of us just did the route counterclockwise in 2.5 days which included a bunch of rain and extra routes to find camping and re-routes for closed areas and one creek crossing we didn't do due to the rain. West Cowpen is still closed, I think this may be old news to most. Refer to the Facebook post for the detour.

Overall a great ADV route and very big bike friendly!

Check this out. You can ride down to the red XXXX's (ignore them) and then take the right turn following the lower green dashes. It dumps you out above Eton, GA. The upper green dashes were from another section that was closed but is now open.

Any updates on Old CCC Camp Rd. - Is it still closed (I think the Google Maps below shows the area closed)? If it's still closed, is it worth riding to Barnes Creek Falls and backtracking - Not sure which side of Barnes Creek Falls the road is closed?

Anything else near the route worth checking out/riding if time permits? upload_2017-6-6_12-12-25.png

Our 4 man group will be starting counterclockwise from Tellico Plains and I think we are going to detour off at E. Cowpen/NF64 and head down to pick up the route at way point #219 since there is a section closed on w.Cowpens. but if we do decide to take the little detour that BikerRiderOH took and end up at Mill Creek rd. I will try to take a look around that Lake/Falls.

What day are you all starting?

Does that get you past the closure? I thought the closure was south of where that brings you back onto the route.

Yes the BRO detour in the previous post #390 will put us on course with old ccc camp road. If we take NF45 road (blackbear) at waypoint 212S we will miss all of that completely. We will most likely stay on the SM500 route.

    We are leaving 8th. June.

Anybody know anything about the OHV trails around Conasauga Lake? It looks like they connect from the lake down to Old CCC Camp Rd/Holly Creek.

Windy Gap is what they call an expert trail, not for the faint of heart! My 690 was a handful but it wasn't impossible!

We just did the SM500 this weekend and had a great time. I'll post some pics and report soon. But, a few notes - Old CCC Camp road is still closed (with a gate) in the area noted previously. Mountain Man BBQ was awful (sorry if there's any connection there) and we had one route question past Suches, a bit past Cooper's - after you turn off Cooper's Creek Rd onto Sea Creek it looks like the tracks go onto a trail that has/had a guard rail across it (someone has pushed it over) and then when the track comes back to the road (Mulky Gap Rd) it shows going across the street, we couldn't see where it would cross.

I'm trying to figure out what went wrong here. Does anyone have an recent actual track that you rode through here, AKA, bread crumbs? I'm looking at the section from Cooper's Store to waypoint 304 (red). The information I have is 4 years old and conflicts with the posted route.

I am getting ready to post a new version of the SM500 and the SM1000. The latest posted versions have been around for a while. The new versions will include route corrections (minor) and a couple of new waypoints (for the SM1000). I read the earlier note about Mountain Man BBQ. It is disappointing to hear that the food is bad. When I was there with a group in 2014, our food was excellent. It was more than a BBQ place. - they had a lot of variety. The man running the place was Greek. When I was by there in 2015, the restaurant was closed. I'm guessing there are new owners and they won't be in business for long. :) The Dillard House is the place to go if you want a BIG meal. There is a roadside BBQ spot a few miles south down 441 past waypoint 320, but I am not sure of their days and hours (thinking THU - SAT). Here are some maps for youse guys the cover the SM500 route correction and the road closings in the Cohutta.

    Cohutta Ranger's map
    [IMG]

Ranger's road closings on the SM500 map with a suggested detour for the Cohutta Wilderness. FWIW, I think CCC/Old CCC camp road is permanently blocked. I have not heard of anyone going through there.

Here is the route correction. I don't know how this got screwed up. I'm going to blame it on Basecamp. Follow the blue track to get from Cooper's Creek to Mulkey Gap (center of picture). The SM1000 track is correct.

Question for the crowd: Going counter clockwise, Whitt Rd. is the last dirt section in the yellow track. Whitt Rd has 4 creek crossings. Creek crossing number 1, the one with the slippery rocks, has always been difficult. Creek crossing number 3 has become more challenging, mostly because the water is deep. How do youse guys feel about this section? Does it need a posted warning and ride-around?

I missed this when you posted it. Have you actually used this detour? I'm asking because I haven't been this way and I heard it was closed (2 years ago).

FYI. On 06/10/17, A tree was down and blocked Witt rd. We detoured at WP#131 on Epperson rd. to Towee Falls rd. to Steer Creek rd. comes out at 68 next to Witt rd.

I was informed by local friend that #3 has gotten deep due to the trucks digging up and washing away the base.

Here we are last November at Witt road.
