    This is result of stubbornness and not knowing you or bike limits. Clime was 45 degrees and I was riding very slowly so nothing happened to my or my bike<o:p></o:p>

    Hi there,

    I have a 2000 F650GS, which I could potentially ride this winter (Canada). What brand and grade of oil do you use in your bike? Do you change the grade/weight of the oil for the winter riding? (I'm currently running mine with Mobil 20w50.)

    I read this thread quickly, so I may have missed it if any of you winter riders talked of TIRE PRESSURES...

    Any recommendations?

    I am a svelt :lol3 200Lb rider on an XR650L with Pirelli MT21's soon to have ice screws put in...

    Also, to go a short distance with ice screws on bare pavement- anyone done it?


    How close to the edge knobs do I need to stud? If I get away from "traffic" or "obstacles" I'm not afraid to lean it over a bit... I put screws on an XR200 many years ago and used it on a lake- but that doesn't qualify for much experience after reading this thread... :thumbup

    I changed to 5W30 for winter, otherwise I'd have clutch problems on startup when it was cold out. Never had a problem doing that, either. BMW even recommends it in the owners manual.

    I have no idea what pressures you'd run with screws. Screws are generally a bad plan if you'll be riding a lot of paved stuff. I ran just under 30 PSI with studs but I imagine you'd have to go much lower with screws to get grip on the ground.

    Ride the shoulder if you can. Pavement eats screws FAST. When the heads wear off, it's like having studs but in that period where the head is worn smooth but still exists, you're in for an interesting time.

    I keep relatively high pressures because 1. the tires don't heat up and 2. screws will tend to get pushed in and give you a flat if you use low pressures. This is even more true if you have tube tires because the tube will shred.

    Well, having a motorcycle under 700 lbs helps a little. If you have a bike that comes with reverse, winter riding may not be for you.

    I'm not sure that it's a good idea to run 20W50 in the Rotax single ever. It's a water cooled engine that runs tighter tolerances than a boxer and doesn't need the thicker oil. I like oil that reaches all the moving parts quickly, especially when cold.

    Right now I'm using mobile1 5W40 and will change to the 0W-40 when it gets reaaly cold :lol3 .

    FWIW, I used 10W-30 dino in a BMW K75 last winter in temps as low as 10ºF, worked OK, put 20W-50 in when it warmed up and the engine was not as responsive to throttle. A guy can go way overboard on oil!

    (OH great, now I've turned this into an oil thread. We're heading to JM for sure now! :grim )

    All my liquid-cooled bikes get the same oil, year 'round, whether I'm riding in Alaska at below zero temperatures or in Death Valley at over 100F - 5W-40 synthetic. Can't see any reason to put a high viscosity oil into an engine that has a thermostat to control the temperature, and the lighter oil flows better at start up.
    But, oil selection seems to be a personal thing, with all too little reliance on what the manufacturers recommend. So run whatever makes ya feel good. :dunno

    Lots of good info here. I began riding in Minnesota winters during the early 70's as a starving student when effective cold weather gear was mostly army surplus. Because of the salt on the roads I sprayed my winter bikes liberally and often with WD 40, which was a new and wondrous substance back then. And because of the rapid cooling experienced by a air cooled engine used in subzero temps frequent oil changes were a must due to moisture contamination. This appeared as a white froth in the oil.
    Alcan rider wisely pointed out the need to pee and pee again before suiting up. Something about riding in the cold with a bladder full of coffee can make peeing feel really urgent.

    It just looks like one. Really, it's a KLR250. Just had bigger tires installed for better flotation in the soft stuff. Then a bigger seat for more comfort for the old duffer's butt. And more storage capacity added so the old phart could take all his medications along with him. And a big fairing and windshield to keep the wind off his aging bones. Lastly, an engine transplant 'cause the 250 couldn't lug all that weight up the hills. But no, that's just a KLR250. He don't ride nothing but dual sports. :huh
