    Farewell ride for Belle....

Hello inmates, I know it's been a while since I've done anything in this thread and my apologies. Been busy recovering one of my other girls when I had a get-off in the Yukon and finally got her back in the fold....

Anyway, I took Belle (Isabelle) on her final ride down Hwy 101 from Oceanside to downtown San Diego to reminisce our good times together before I hand her over to someone else. One of my favorite rides is along the coast during the early morning as you already know from the first post.

Belle and I taking in the view at Torrey Pines....

~ Time to move on from our relationship...

Over the past few months I've been doing research on a new bike that will take my adventure rides to the next level in ergonomics, comfort, abilities, ease of maintenance, and fuel range just to name a few.

These were the "must haves" for the next bike, anything over is a benny...

~ 8+ gallon tank for a 300+ mile range on a single fill up
~ shaft drive so I don't have to stop every 500 miles to lube the chain
~ tubeless tire for easy plug and go tire repair; results in less tools

This got old really quick going to Key West and during my trip to Alaska...

Chain, just use a chain oiler and for get about it! I have both shaft and chain drive bikes so I know the problems with each. Lots of great choices for bikes now and I wouldn't let a chain get in the way if all others things meet your demands.

Doug, it was fun to have this Monster 821 Stripe but it has to do more with ergonomics. I had my fun with sport and naked bikes but since retiring - that position is starting to take their toll on the wrist...

~ After much deliberation I welcome Mia to fold...

Fresh off the truck and still needs assembly...
    IMG_0030 (1).jpg

The plastic protective film bits were still attached...
    IMG_0034.jpg

Mirrors and auxiliary lights still in packages...
    IMG_0036.jpg

    Exhaust still wrapped...
    IMG_0038.jpg

It was late in the day Saturday and the techs needed time to assemble, charge the battery, and pre-delivery test ride so I did not end up taking her home. I will have to wait until Tuesday when the shop opens and take delivery. I'll post a ride back home taking a different route....

    ~ In the running were:

    ~ 2018 BMW R1200 GSA
    ~ 2017 Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally
~ 2017 Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX
    ~ 2017 KTM 1190 Adventure

The first three checked the box in what I wanted; the KTM 1190 Adventure just fell short with the chain drive and 6.1 gallon tank.

The next to get scratched from the list was the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally due to the 6.3 gallon tank.

So it was between the BMW GSA and Moto Guzzi however, the Big Guzzi won in the end due to the ease of maintenance. I like to wrench on my own bikes and the new BMW GSA has too much electronics for me to screw with. I'm afraid I'd need an electronics/computer degree to figure that stuff out...

Here's an example of the Guzzi's ease of maintenance - valve clearance check and adjustment...

What's more - Moto Guzzi is not shy about getting their service manual out there for owners to use...

    It's a turn key bike.

I don't need to do anything to it but break in. It come standard with an 8.5 gallon tank, shaft drive, ABS, Traction Control, Panniers, aluminum sump guard, center stand, aux lights, off road pegs (have to remove the rubber inserts), wind deflectors, hand guards, and two 12v sockets (one on the dash and another in the storage compartment under the pillion seat).

Great choice! Have always liked Moto Guzzies. I have an 1190 and love it. Adventure bikes are just so much fun, a friend who has a big bike collection offers to let me ride some of his bikes but I always turn him down because none of the bikes are as fun to ride as mine! He finally bought a GS and now understands! My 1190 has a real CC and a camel tank on it so it has 7.7 gals of fuel without having a huge tank in front of me. Are those wheels tubeless? I wonder how they are sealing the inside of the rim? If I see you on PCH I will give you a wave!

Yeah, it's basically at the far west end of Santa Fe Dr., except you can't cross the railroad tracks there. There's a small parking area above the point, often a great surf break going on down below. There's a new Philz just north on 101 & J St. :*sip*

Adventure bikes have that neutral riding position vs the forward lean on most other bikes... Can't wait to get her out on a RR next fall, until then just day tripping' stuff...

If I see a camel tank on an 1190 I'll know who is it... hope to see ya'

your new moto guzzi intrigued me so I checked their website & they have a new bike coming out called a V85, very cool looking. they want suggestions for a name for it. no specs on it other than it's an 850 so who knows when it'll be in production.

    Pick-up Day...

I headed down to San Diego mid-morning to pick-up Mia and I was sooooooo careful riding Belle down the I-5. There was the usual traffic around Birmingham just before you get into Del Mar so I had to split lanes and luckily it cleared up around the I-805 split...

When I got there, Mia was already waiting for me outside the shop...

You can see Belle in the background...
    DSC00115 (1).jpg

I rode around San Diego for a while to get familiar with Mia and then headed up SR-163 and I-15 to Via Rancho Pky to vary the speed and work Mia’s transmission...
    DSC00117 (1).jpg

I continued on Via Rancho Pkwy until it connected to Del Dios Hwy for a relaxing and scenic ride....
