Figure to start this up as we're not that far from the Winter Olympics - this time with palm trees!

Just watched HBO Real Sports segment on the building & corruption surrounding this event. I'm sure that this has happened with most Olympic games, but in this age of media saturation, Putin should have been smarter. But I guess when one controls the media, he thought he'd get away with it.

1 stat I was shocked to hear - Sochi has spent more $ to build, then all previous Winter Olympics combined, wow. And Sochi and lots of Russia, has serious poverty. Shame they couldn't help the people there, at least give a toilet that flushes (I type this while dropping the kids off at the pool)

Well I guess future travelers to Sochi can hit the beach then go ice skating. As the Don King of the East, Putin says - Only in Russia Comrade!

Anyway, I'm going out on a limb here, snow will be an issue.

    Lastly let's start the chant now - U S A, U S A!

Don't hate, we're not good in everything, but one must have national pride.

Surely, after watching the actions of the IOC over these many years, you are jesting?

    political posturing
    kickbacks
    national advantage
    conspiracy
    self-service
    pandering
    blackmail

and that is just a start.......

I might be an idealist but for me, the Olympics remain a celebration of sport and an opportunity to marvel at and recognise the best in their discipline. The worst thing about the Olympics is the "medal table"; it's an utter irrelevance.

An uneducated view but I do feel that Rogge has done a decent job in trying to turn the IOC round after Samaranch.

I was in Sochi last July/August. They in no way seemed ready to host the olympics. Their existing traffic was horrendous. At they time they were banking on a single train to carry people to/from town/the events. I'm curious how that will work out for them.

While some hotels were being built and others renovated it seems most of the new contruction was geared toward authentic places like this:

Guys, when you are talking about toilets, remember that you borrowed trillions of dollars from around the world.

I think they are smart, funny, have a good sense of humor and instinct to survive. But I suspect the winter olympics are going to be a major clusterfuck and embarrassment .

I, for one, am looking forward to a celebration of the ideals and stories of personal commitment and sacrifice, altruistic participation, and sportsmanship, expressed in our unified admiration and exaltation of athletes and the human drama of athletic competition.

Brought to you by пицца Хат.

But until they take care of that fucking tanker up in Marquette, I'm boycotting!

I was asked to bid to do some work for the Vancouver Olympics and after 2 weeks I told them no thanks and withdrew my bid. I figured that it was going to be more trouble than they were worth. Already I had had a series of phone calls from a "guy in the states" who worked directly for "a guy in Europe" who was a big deal (not to me btw). It became clear that I would be worse off post Olympics. I never regretted my decision for a minute.

The IOC took over my Club in Vancouver for the Olympics. Everything was very hush hush, members were not allowed access for a month around the Olympics. To be clear the members, myself included, voted in favour of this because of how the physical structure of the Club would benefit. It did.

The Club got major significant renovations and security upgrades , etc. Rumour has it that the IOC flew in it's own wine, chefs, etc.

Vancouver and BC will be paying for Olympics for years. Having been through Expo 86, APEC, the Olympics and two Stanley Cup Riots I would rank in my order of preference as a resident and taxpayer.

    1. World's Fair

    2. APEC

    3. Olympics

    4. Stanley Cup Finals

Interestingly enough my commute to the office improved during the Olympics and was always under 15 minutes. Now with the bicycle lanes and resulting street closures 4 years later it is 25-30 minutes.

Looks like you should have borrowed some rupees too, from the explosion in my twitter account. I will give them credit, two pots in one stall will build olympic community spirit.
