Some advice

    I have owned many different motorcycles in my life. Mostly cruisers from the 80's and 90's. I have fallen in love with the 950 and the 990 adventure. I am almost ready to buy a '06 950, but have a few concerns.

    First, on start up, there was a noticeable amount of blue smoke. Is this a normal thing? The owner assured me it wasn't a problem.
    Second, the owner said he had it "uncocked" and the carb jetted. I understand what all of this means, but is it a good idea or perhaps its the cause of the smoke?
    Lastly, it has 20k miles, I know thats not a lot, but what should I be concerned with at that many miles?

    20k miles is not a lot if it hasn't been revved to the moon and has had decent maintenance. I just sold an '06 950 SM with 32k. Valves still in spec. Uses no oil. I picked up an '07 990 with 30k, which I will be heading off to Alaska on after some basic maintenance.

    Blue smoke is not normal. Jetting is not the easiest on these bikes, given the carb access. How does it run? Good reading in the HOW section. Don't be scared off by the talk of water pumps etc.

    I thought that it should have revved more smoothly. It felt like it was choppy. Especially when idling down.

    Thanks for the advice. Im also considering a 990. Although they are harder to find in my price range.

    At 25000 miles each, neither my 950, nor my 990 engine has smoked.

    My bike also had been rejetted. I am still in the process of correcting that mistake.

    My bike started smoking on startup randomly at about 30,000 miles. We just recently tore down the top end and found that one of the valve seals had failed. The valve guide was fine, but the seal was bad. That allowed oil to drip into the rear cylinder if the rear exhaust valves were open when the bike stopped. If this bike smoked from one cylinder on startup and not both, then this is a possible culprit. The bike can be ridden like that, but it is annoying to get a big puff of smoke on startup randomly.

    I don't know what "uncocked" means. If the bike was rejetted, then the owner probably removed the charcoal canister and SAS systems. Many owners rejet the carbed bikes using large idle and main jets. In my view, that's a mistake. My bike came with that jetting, and I spent a lot of time trying to make the bike run correctly. My jetting is just about stock now, and the bike runs very, very well. On the dyno it puts out 85 bhp at the rear wheel, and that's enough for me.

    I have walked away. I meant uncorked not uncocked. Somehow auto corrected.

    What are the pros and cons of carbs vs efi? That is 950 vs 990?

    My 950 Adventure has 65,000 miles on it and doesn't smoke at all. I'd say its good you walked away.
