Newcomer to the DS world. Just bought a 2006 KLR 650. I live in Suffolk, VA and was trying to meet other riders in the general area to ride with.

    Thanks,

    Karl

It's been 10yrs since I was on a motorcycle. Then I briefly had a 1996 CBR900RR for like 9 months. I took a MSF course back then. But, I'd just assume classify myself as a beginner rider.

I want to get into some dirt and woods. Not really looking at doing crazy stuff, just to get off the major roads, explore, take in the scenery.

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

Good attitude, read through the Perfect Line section here, and heres a link to some good info.

I would suggest you buy the VA and NC DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer, just taking a quick look at you area I didn't see much.:dunno Then again I don't know the area.
If you ever want to head west I'll be happy to show you all the dirt/gravel/mud that you can stand. :lol3

    And you're welcome. :nod

Welcome. I do most of my riding out in the center of the state - a lot less traffic and a lot of good forest service roads.

I'm down in Chesapeake too, so far the only dirt I've found is my driveway.

Notalent and I found some good stuff about 10 minutes south. Dual and single track. Mostly farm access road and hunting roads. Wasn't posted but we did have to circumnavigate a measly gate. Rode for two hours and didn't see anyone (except for a bear we scared the poo out of).

    What you riding?

I've recently purchased a 2006 DL1000. When I have the time I'll read some more of these posts but I'm interested in doing some off-road riding. I've already discovered that the V-strom is a wonderful street bike so I'd like to take it off-road. Nothing too terribly wild (this bike is more street than dirt after all).

I haven't found diddly for dirt here in Richmond. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough.

Welcome. If you are in Norfolk, the best answer is head due west.

My area pretty much blows carp taint aside from the occasional farm access roads we occasionaly poach.

I'm riding back to Colorado for a few weeks. PM me if you want to go local here around mid August.

    How you like the DL1000?

You, and others on this thread, might enjoy a low-key motorcycle rally in Buena VIsta, VA - happens in Mid August. I think it's the weekend of 12 August.

I'm trying to get more info now, but it's a no-brand laid back rally.

The area around Buena Vista is full of good, curvy paved roads and tons of fire roads. Shoe Creek is a more challenging trail and has a number of water crossings - probabaly about 40 minutes from the rally site.

I've emailed a POC to get more info.
