Yeah . . . all you inmates are welcome to join the pool party. Come by around 8 pm. Pool water should be nice and warm by that time . . . and I mean really warm . . . after all the 12-year olds have been in the pool for a few hours sucking down on Gatorades, never bothering to get out to go to the bathroom. :lol3 Come on by and enjoy a nice warm soak. You're an inmate, your special, you deserve it. :thumb

Meeting at Sunriver/I-15 exit at 8:30am for a trip up and around Seegmillar and West Mesa. Last time I was up there I had 8 wild horses galloping along with me.

While RRR was partying at the pool, he invited us to post our ride today on his thread - thx for sharing RRR :D I hope you had fun!!

I'll try and keep it in theme and start with a map. We started at the Sun River/I-15 exit, headed east along SoUT Parkway and exited off River Rd south onto the dirt. Then we cut over past Little Black Mountain to Sunshine Trail Rd. Not long after that we hit a maze of roads and StG wondered where I was leading him!

First stop was the Glitter Pit

Next stop was at this contraption. Any guesses to what this is? StG might post a pic later with a hint

At this same stop there was a large water tank. I peeked over the rim of the tank to see if there was any water in it. There was but it was very green. Then a head turned on the surface of the water and two very big yellow eyes opened and stared at me. I let out a girl scream!! There was an owl in the water a few feet from my face! I hope StG posts a better pic of his big yellow eyes. They were beautiful.

We didn't know what to do. His feathers were all wet and many were missing. He was in a sad way balancing on some weeds. We found a plank and put it in the water under the weeds and lifted him up out of the water. He looked very weak and it was very hot and dry outside the tank. We left him a little drier than we found him but still in the tank. It wasn't looking good for him - sad.

On top of Seegmillar the Globemallows were going off.

    Globemallow carpets on the mountain.

Cliffs on the back side of Seegmillar Mountain

The road on West Mesa gets a little thin at times. StG was wondering again about my chosen route. He noted I like the rocky roads :eek1 He was :D:D so I think he likes them too :D

Ride stats: 20.5 mph moving average speed!

    Hey ElleDubs & StG,

Very nice post, ElleDubs. I'm just out of the pool and enjoying your pics. The orange flowers look spectacular. Full bloom. I've only been up on the backside of Seegmiller Mountain a few times. Some of that is a bit sketchy and loose, at least the way I remember it. Too bad about the owl, not a good way to go for him.

Ok, what is that contraption? Waiting on a few more clues . . .

    See you guys soon, RRR

Here's the poor guy when we found him. Not sure how he got there, but there was a dead bird floatin in the water as well.

And after. Hopefully, he can dry off & get himself out.

And here's Elledubs demonstrating the contraption use!!!

A couple more pics from Saturday's ride. Haha - you guys missed out on a really fun ride! Thanks Elledubs! I think it'd be a pretty close toss up as to who has ridden on more dirt roads/trails in southern utah - R3 or Elledubs:D.

At the start of the ride near little black mountain.

Turning off onto some of the less used tracks.

Somewhere on west mesa/yellow horse flat maybe? Only Elledubs knows where we are at this point:D.

Here's the map. Eastern Nevada, near Pioche. Look at Benchmark for more detail.

My dad and I stayed at the Overland Hotel. Spent two days in the area. One day on motos, the other hiking. :D

The Kokopelli room is more like a mini-suite. Turned out to be very quiet and a nice change of pace from the cookie-cutter motel. The Overland Hotel has an interesting history. Stop in if you are on the main street of Pioche.

Lounge area and one of two beds, all for $70.

    [IMG][IMG]

The start of the Mount Wilson Back Country Byway. Corner of #322 and #93 in Pioche. Lower end of old mining tramway in background.

We get stopped for a bit of road construction. Making friends with the flag guy. :D He used to work in California, relocated to Nevada. He commented on the lower cost of living. :lol3

We deviate from the "official" scenic byway a bit to go by Echo Canyon State Park. On the way we see another Adams Leaning Wheel Grader by the side of the road. Score! This one is pulled by a tractor, looks like it is still in occasional use. Lots of clever technology that has endured the test of time.

Small reservoir at Echo Canyon State Park.

Locals with a sense of humor. 75 mph on the dirt. :thumb

And the neighborhood "Attack Bunny" :clap

Most of the roads are smooth gravel and/or packed dirt. Almost no ruts. Very easy riding.

    My dad enjoying the scenery.

    Entering Spring Valley State Park.

Spring Valley State Park. Eagle Valley Reservoir. Kind of like a miniature Lake Mead.

Typical scene in Spring Valley, just north of the reservoirs.

Lots of water and lush grass for the cattle.

We stop for lunch at one of the state park campgrounds. Always good to find the shade.

    Old stone houses.

    Pioneer-era cemetery.

    Gravestones.

    Date of death = 1870.

    Another old gravestone.

Some signs. The Mount Wilson Byway follows the "main" dirt road. Relatively easy if you have a reasonable sense of direction.

    Mirror shot.

Dad taking a few pics of me.

We always ride near each other, often playing a version of "leap frog" as we stop and start for photo ops.

The road circumnavigates Mount Wilson. There is a different road that actually goes to the summit. Lots of FAA communication towers.

WRR on the backside of Pioneer Pass, heading back down to the valley.

Little salute to the sticker. :beer

Always good to ride with Dad. :nod

    Action photo. :ricky

Finishing the route across Lake Valley with Holt Farm in background. Almost back to pavement at Highway 93.

The end point. It's about 25 miles back to Pioche on Highway 93. Loop is roughly 100 miles. All of it is worthwhile, but the state parks are the best.

We spent most of the next day hiking and taking photos in Cathedral Gorge State Park.

As always, thanks for riding along! :wave

Camped at Cathedral Gorge Tuesday through Thursday of this past week.
We went South of Caliente to Rainbow Canyon for a little diversion.
Now I'll have to go back for Mt. Wilson. Thanks for the post.

    Who knew?

RRR does it again, bringing geography and geology to many of us that never knew it was even there.

    Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Rest assured RRR - many of us check in on a regular basis, even though we don't have much to contribute.
The trails are open and the roads are clear, trees are almost completely in leaf and the grass needs attention every 5 days or so.

Thanks for the continued effort and terrific reports!

Yes Vikingtazz, I'm one of "those people" :D

Not much to contribute except, cool Vulcan! :evil I just ordered a Mustang seat yesterday because the stock seat was killing wife and I riding any longer than 1 hr with no breaks.
If I had multiple bikes like some people (RRR), :lol3, no way could I afford the Mustang seat. I'm working on retiring early like you, my friend. 27 now, 45 is my goal (at least semi-retired...). Tips appreciated :D
