    break now over...............!!!
    .
so i pulled over at the foot of this mountain of madness as there was this statue/memorial to the famine...........in the form of a famine ship !
    .
    feast your eyes !
    .

    .
    .
this is a bit maudlin for sure but i think the point is made !

after traipsing round this 'ship of death' you can then go for a bit to eat in the pub

soon back on the road and the calmness of the sea and mild damp soft air helped me out of the thoughts of hunger and dying and all the sadness that pervaded the country back then..........i was thinking how there could have been so much beauty and still so much pain and hunger in this place.
    .
but the waters were calming at least.

further on out the road i came upon a sign for old head beach....................i remembered this name from my childhood when we used to visit our cousin and family and get 'leed' lemonade and heach out to bertra or old head, when all you thought about was making sandcastles and running in the waves and just 'playing' !
    .
many events and life altering changes later and here i was back again in the memories of a boy.
    .
it seems that life is just an unrolling of a carpet until it is finally all rolled out and it lays before you with its patterns and grooves and colours and stains and the light fades to black...................ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooo..........not going there right now.

all the sthones (!) piled up from previous storms leave the place a bit the worse for wear

that if one doth gain good head upon the strand at old head one wouldth dearth to live a long and fruitful life of bounteous glory.
    .
sorry, i can't prove or disprove the above which is written upon one of the walls of the cellar abroad in westport house.
    .
but on the other hand, it's not the kinda thing you would make up and then go to the bother of etching it into stone, now is it ?
    .
    .
the wildlife was getting a bit strange and it put me in mind of cowans toffee bars from long long ago in bonnie scotland

so i went the high road..............through louisburgh and it's history and on up into the 'wetlands' higher up on a different plane
    .
    .
    .
    .
there was no one about, not a tosser to be seen, ne'er a one at all !
    .
this was a lonesome road, a road with a bit of history to it too. this was the road to Doo Lough, history indeed happened along this boreen.
    .
Doo Lough (from the gaeilge for black lake, or dubh locha) is but a spot between Louisburgh and Delphi lodge.
    .
about 600 people, locals, who were starving hereabouts about 165 years ago headed to Louisburgh for food to which was to be distributed to them by the local receiving officer at the workhouse. himself said he had no authority to give them the indian corn meal but that they could appeal to the board of guardians, two of whom would be in Delphi Lodge the next day, that is colonel hograve and a mister lecky. As it was 12 miles to Delphi the whole lot slept in the streets of Louisburgh as they were so weakened by hunger.
    .
next morning, on waking and stirring it was discovered about 100 of those souls had died in the night or hunger. it was a brutal and wet day, lashing from the heavens as the 500 made their way slowly towards Delphi. After arriving at Delphi that afternoon these two fu*ks previously mentioned were at lunch and told staff they were not to be disturbed. The crowd waited while more dropped dead, it became apparent they would not be met. Eventually hograve and lecky met with the crowd and told them they would get no corn meal and no entry ticket to the workhouse.
    .
the crowd headed back over the 12 miles again towards Louisburgh. as the weather worsened the weak fell dead on the road and by the lake. it is said the winds howled for their souls.
as many as 400 died on this little stretch of road, dropping lightly to their deaths, some bodies were found in the lake and so many just scattered around the land.
    .
when the authorities came upon this maze of decaying dead they dug big troughs and piled them in, no coffins needed here.
    .
the road back then was just a goat track through a wilderness, but now it holds the souls of all these people, forever.
    .
    .
    the road !

apologies for breaking off every so often, i keep running out of ink.
    .
the lake now has a kinda memorial to all the poor of the world who died needlessly in the face of greed and such like.
    .
    .
    .
    .
i kept stopping and took a couple more pics of the lake as i felt i was being called to stop and ponder and absorb and become aware..

soon i was motoring onwards towards killary harbour, stopping all the while to take in some of the views and all. not many people, infact none at all most of the time, i suppose thats what you get when you get here, total solitary !
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
and of course, the 'one' green field in the whole area, and boy does it stand out, even on a shitty day !

even a miniature waterfall, home of the leprechauns it is told, by sheep farmers of old.

    .
    .
    .
i stopped in here in leenane, leenaun and had a toastie sandwich and a pint of porter............the toastie was fu*kin' brutal in the extreme, i couldn't ate it and i was very very hungry..................but the porter was nectar, divine, fulfilling, delicious........it lasted but a moment but its legacy was pure genius.
    .
    .
    .
    .
i moved onwards back towards the comforts of a home fire..................got soaked by the time i hit downtown bellavary or kilkelly, not sure which but it wasn't bohola for sure, as there were 5 pubs in bohola, and i knew them all of old.
    .
got my wet gear on by the side of the road, cursing meself one more time for getting wet first, so that i was sort of insulating the wetness inside me wet gear and not allowing new wetness to disturb it ! i know you know what i mean here.
    .
    .
so, getting darker i was approaching sligo/slugo at a rate of knots and powersliding or is it aqualplaning me way along getting plenty of spray from the more plentiful cages now appearing.
    .
i pulled in in slugo................had to get some food as i was shaking worse than a buck with a bad disease.
    .
went in here - it was open - and it had a big big table everyone had to share
    .
    .
    .
    .
as you can see near enough everyone moved and left by the time i was right well settled, i put it down to my magnetic personality.
    .
    .
    .
    .
the food were grand, it were and soon the caffeine, sugar and such was gaining a foothold on me insides...............!!
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
as you can see the streets were humming and the mood was up..........................
    .
    .
infact, not even drowned water rats were appearing it was that brutal a day...................still i did get a run out and it was only march and you just can't beat a good scud up or down the road in this fair(ly damp and sodden) land.
    .
    .
i leave you with a pic of the garavogue river and sligo.................i still had a ways to go and it's all right for you as you sit there in comfort reading this drivel !
    .
thanks again for your patience and indulgence, it is mirrored in my soul..............if you have any suggestions, well you know what to do !

hey dude (sham) from the inverted ireland.................i sometimes think your mega country in some tiny ways mirrors ours but you got so much much more...........!! hope you and your new zealander countrymen and ladies are doin' all right !
most of the time Bendernz i do think i'm just talking to myself, actually i am talking to myself most of the time, but most of the time i don't think anyone else hears me talking to myself (!?) you know what i mean ?!
    .
sham is local for 'mate/friend/chap/old boy' etc
    .
flick the switch in da head.................................aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........!!!
    .
    sooooooooooo
    .
me humour is a bit up today....................cos it's...........................dry.......................!!! wooohhoooooo............!!! a dry day today !!
    .
a rare beast is the dry day here, a rare day indeed !
    .
spaking of rare....................what about this for confusion..........saw it a while back...............hmmmmmmmmm
    .
    .
    .
a nice picture of 'da harses in da field' if ya get ma drift...........but on closer inspection it looks as if there is an imposter, a hoor in drag so to spake.................an undercover fbi or 'g' man in a funny suit of sorts....................hmmmmmmmmmm..........or are me eyes as fu*ked up as the rest of me ?
    .
    .
beee da hokey, dat's no fookin' harse, no sir tis not, not one bit, no !
    .
    .
    .
    .
just cos this buck has a big harn on his head, he thinks he's the cat's pajamas..............'look at me big harn' he's saying.......'look !'
    .
    .
    .
    .
being ris and all...............i showed him mine..............he explained he had two harns on his head and that just aboot ended the chat.
    .
if he is a 'g' man..............well, he's doin' a great job.............pretending to be riding the simple ould oirish mares and the lady harses too !!
    .
right then..............where was i before this, oh yeah, i took another (obviously) trip out for a day in the environs within reach of a couple of hours.
    .
i thought why not head to 'rossbeg'.....................so i did.........................wee place never was there before and the sun was out and spring was rising in the loins..............and every other miserable fu*ker was at mass, this being a sunday and all, and so the roads would be relatively quiet until just after the communion (the part where the mad ones at mass queue up to ate a bit of what they think is meat, human meat, but made is to taste a bit like..........bread !............genius idea that one, really spot on.............lets pray to this good kind charitable decent honourable innocent man...........and then.....................lets eat him..................wooohoooo...........!!)
    .
    .
rossbeg is on western reaches of the big squiggly county of donegal/dun na ngall/tir conaill in the north whest of this wee island.
    .
after a good wee bit o'roidin' i eventually popped up near ardara/ard an ratha and slowed down for a rest.
    .
    .
    .
all kinds a midgies/flies/wasps/moths etc were making themselves available to me helmet and as i was getting hungry i would just open the visor...............it's a pit of a pot luck thing, but absolutely full of protein....................the furry bits are not the best though !
    .
    .
i had to stop for the breakfast 'of champions' as you bucks call it
    .
    .
    .
    .
i was still a bit'een thirsty as it was warming up................mass was in full swing..............singin' and alleluia and wooohoooo..........!!!
    .
so i made my way (again) to where the divil's own be hangin' oot..............just for a wee sip of the black, just one.
    .
    .
    .
    .
short while later i fetch up here but the shaggin' tide is out..................woulda been nice for it to have been waitin on me for a good photo and all that.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
this looked to be a grand spot right enough, but no pubs or shops, not even a church, was nearby so i moved on a bit further
    .
    .
and of course in this septic isle you are never too far from the holy stuff, it's under every bush, if only you could get at the bush, but that's a whole other chapter.............hmmmmmmmmmmm
    .
    .
    .
    .
so now for some pictures of a clear day ! drum roll.................................!!!
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
a bit about the bike.....................it's grand and the colour is not so bad ! and there's loads of buttons !
    .
    .
so i was in and about rossbeg...............mission accomplished...................no one much about for such a great day !
    .
    .
i was tooling along the back roads and all of a sudden i could hear a ferocious argument going on.............it was terrible loud altogether.
    .
    .
i pulled over to the hard shoulder (hah !) and killed the engine.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    total silence ! hmmmmmmmmmmmmm !
    .
    .
and then it started up again.................mother of god.................roaring and bellowing it was !
    .
so i looks around and sure enough, up on top of a hill i sees two of them and them all shouting and swearing at each other...wtf is going on here
    .
    .
i roared up at them to quieten down or i'd call the guards and not to be using profanities in case children would hear...well, that just drove the female about stupid................she fu*ked me out of it.........her in her fancy ponytail and him just standing there looking as pissed off as i was getting, so i gave her the universal single finger salute and go back on me bike............jesus but i felt sorry for him but then again she was very cute looking with her hair all done up
    .
    .
    .
    .
so i head on towards a wee village called portnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !
    .
nice wee place with a pier and beach and all
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
i think the mobbed out beach is called nairn/narin/n'w'arin or such.........................packed out it was !
    .
    .
    .
    .
of course by now the righteous would be spilling forth from the high pitched places of worship.............all would be well in their worlds...............kindness and decency would have seeped into their minds with having being praying and all...............good christian thoughts towards their fellow man and such..............a calm mellowness you get only from the meditation and burning of incense and listening to the words of the good book...............................!!
    .
this calm feeling and general empathy towards our fellow man usually lasts and lasts, usually until at least they get from the church to the car park, until the queue starts to build to get out of the car park.............by the time our holy rollers get to the road they have lost already thrown in the towel, just like last week, they push/shove to get outta there first.............push through to get their newspapers and by the time they get home for the sunday dinner all traces of common decency have once again retreated and disappeared, for another week at least. and so it goes................... lordy lordy lordy.............................wooohoooooooooooooo..............!!!
    .
as mister rawlings says to the gas monkeys...........................let her rip, tate chip.........................!!!!
    .
    .
well, as you can probably see from some of the pictures, it is voting time again.......................give me your number one !
    .
    .
i tell them all they get my number one, every single one.......................it makes everyone happy...............personally i would shoot every damn one of them........................scum is the polite term i am looking for here...................they are like those 'cicada' thing you got there in the old US.................come up from under ground every so many years, shouting and hollering and generally getting in the way and eventually they disappear again until you forget they ever were.......................and then it all starts over !
    .
but.................there is one i would vote for...................i very near fell off when i saw this poster of this candidate..............!
    .
    .
i know nothing about her......................but she will be getting it for sure
    .
    .
    .
it is indeed, time for change !
    .
    .
so, soon i pitched up in donegal town and stopped for a while...................spotted some old grey bikers trying to pick up some nubile young things right there in the middle of town for all to see !
    .
    .
    .
    .
having witnessed the above i decided to forget women and concentrate on some history so i moved off down by the water to see and old friend i had known from long ago...............he used always be green with envy at most everything....................but now he's just green
    .
meet mr o'donnell, mr aodh rua o'donnell (that's red hugh as sasanach)
    .
    .
    .
near by himself is an old monastery where some old books were partly written.......400 or so years ago..........called the annals of the four masters...................these were holy bucks from the long ago who were entrusted to transcribe stories to paper and as most of the paddies couldn't write, it was left to these 4 bucks to put it all on paper...................now, if it were up to me and i was one of the four and i was writing the stories for posterity and as a record of genuine history.....................well, as the paddies couldn't write and the paddies couldn't read.................who the fu*k knows where reality starts and ends..............................hmmmmmmmmmm !
    .
the monastery is in ruins now thanks to our friends over in that pagan country of picts/normans/tories/anglo saxons..............!!
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
as you can see from the last photo their is a big black cloud heading my way so it is time to move on outta here.
    .
    .
i thank you for your time, patience and indulgence..............as always !

Did I meet you the other morning with the boxes on? Anyway, I saw the mighty boosh parked up today and went for a mooch around. Beautiful machine. You may have wondered about the greasy fingerprints and small bouquet of Dandy Lions fixed to the front beak with a clothes peg. All for good luck Mr.

    .
    .
    .
god, the relief...............i do think there's nothing as overrated as bad sex and underrated as a good...........you'se can fill in the rest yourselves here.
    .
missin' you guys and dolls long time.............lots of shit happenin' in the big bad world these times but i'll not be gettin' inta dat here.
    .
did a few trips since i was last chinwaggin' with ya..............some good.................some better......!!
    .
    .
followin' the anitchrist..........scratch that "followin' the antihero" and his gallivanting round europe, looks like good crack indeed.
    .
speakin of antichrists and all, i had a nice spin round the west of ireland earlier and my first port of call was that holy of holies, the big smokin' city of......knock...........!!!
    .
    .
that's right - it's is called knock, actually it used to be called knock knock but they dropped the first bit so as to stop people repeatin' themselves !
    .
    .
so, there i am on me way to knock (knock) and i was feelin' all religiousy goin' to a holy place.
    .
    .
i thought it'd be mobbed with da holies doin' their thing, praying and swaying, singing and shoutin'...............but no, not a sinner, so to speak, didn't see a fecker the whole three minutes i was there...............wait...............there was a few inside the glass cage, right enough, there was.
    .
    .
    .
i knida parked wherever as god and his crew must've been parked in the underground car park.
    .
    .
    .
    .
they had a special spot reserved for me up near the front, but it was mighty warm the closer i got to the crucifix !
    .
    .
a couple of holy pricks were giving out stink cos i was gettin' the special treatment...........prodigal son shite i suppose !
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
i rid (?) rided (?) on over to the glass cage good and loud and the few holies there were a bit annoyed cos it was interfering with da prayin' n'all !
    .
    .
    spot the real statue !
    .
    .
    .
so i killed da engine and quietly moved about to see what was goin' on, the usual kinda thing, sit stand kneel sit kneel stand stand and crack like that...............complicated like a dance step till ya get the swing of it...............it be natural to us paddies like though..........born to it for a fact...............ya never forget it............even the ould chatter............holy moly mudder of gad peace be withya didly didly doo !
    .
    .
ya see the gold crown atop the one's head...............well, that there crown of gold came from all da people round these parts who were asked for (read demanded with threat of excommunication) all the family wedding bands and all that stuff so that father dingleberry could melt it all down and reshape it to put a fuckin' crown atop a white bleedin' statue to honour the mudder of gad..............!!!
    .
you couldn't make this shit up, could ya ?......................that's a facto for ya now ! a crown of gold indeed............
    .
well, to quote a pint sized singer from these lands.........."the jesus i believe in mister doesn't need no gold"...............or summat like dat !
    .
    .
so now, round Knock here the people don't know who the fuck is married and who isn't.................no big deal till you're swaying under ten pints of porter and your focus isn't the best...............it's leading to all kinds a stories in the local weekly paper.........."knock'd up !"
    .
    .
another last picure of the very very very white jesus family, who hailed from the very very very white neighbourhood of bethlehem.
    .
    .
    .
now, for you holie people out there i can send you an official, authenticated picture of the jesus family signed by joseph and mary for the special reduced sum of $ 39.95 plus postage. the picture comes in a special royal blue velvet lined card and a narrative of the miracle of knock knock officially ordained by the church here at the shrine.
    .
    .
    .
it's time for me cup o'tae so it is, so it is !
    .
    .
before i go i thought you'd like to see some of the beautiful souveniers you can get here in knock................luvly tings, luvly tings.
    .
jesus slippers............jesus underpants.............jesus candles...............even jesus dolls (very very white of course).........!
    .
    .
    .
    .
if you're feeling a bit pissed off with the rant about god and all that stuff then i give you 2 options......either 1) come to knock and pray for my soul or 2) well, it sounds like 'go suck yourself' but not quite....!
    .
oh, and apologies to adv for what has passed and what is to come...................hahahahahahahahaha........!!

oh dear, oh dear, oh dear..................i went off on one didn't i.............and me just back from the big house........i was told to take it easy...to walk first before running...............hmmmmmmmmmm.............screwed up one more time.
    .
ok, i took the chill pills earlier and now they're doing their thing.
    .
back to knock, it all started (the religiousy bit) in summer of 1879 when there was 'an apparition', that is the mother of jesus appeared to a group of kids and this kicked the whole thing off..................now there's even an 'international' airport here and one of the popes came for a bit of a pray, him being john paul the 2nd !
    .
so, its a holie place for sure and lets just leave it at that (for now) !
    .
this plaque embellishes it all a bit but in the name of fairness it appears here (bit of an apparition too !)
    .
    .
    .
so, praying done, i head outta town, going south southwestish, towards a wee village/town called 'cong'. cong borders the fair counties of galway and mayo, the corrib river streams runs through it and under it, and it is a mecca for the fishing peoples as the lough mask is just to the north and lough corrib is just to the south.
    .
so all in all this would be worth a stop off i was thinking.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
this was a wee wooded glade in the monastery there. more basterdin' religious stuff here (calm the jets, just tell the good people whats there)
    .
ok, the first church was built on these grounds back in 623 ad by this buck called saint feichin (!), it got burnt down and rebuilt in 1114, destroyed again in 1137 (and no, it wasn't me) by mad bucks from munster (southies !) , rebuilt again by king turlough whose claim to fame was he was the father of the last high king of ireland whose name was king rory o connor. rory lived out his last years there, extended and added some rooms (as you do) and died and was buried there in 1198. before he died he let the brand of worshippers called 'the augustinians' run the joint, so it became an augustinian abbey !
    .
the bould rory was barely cold in the grave when the normans (frenchies) attacked in 1203, a snail eatin' toe rag by the name of william de burgh (billie burke to his friends !). the frenchies, it was said, became 'more irish than the irish themselves' and things went peacable like for a while, till the english (sasanach) appeared in 1542 to suppress all the religiousy places in the name of henry viii (him that was driven mad with an itchy nob !)
    .
so, the whole joint fell into a right mess till the 1850's when a sir benny guinness bought a house nearby (ashford castle) and he decided to sell a few more pints and use the loot to do up the abbey again !
    .
    .
    .
in the middle of the river by the abbey, the monks built a wee stone house in the 12th century, yes in the middle of the river, one big room and in the middle of the room they put in a square hole open to the river below.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
supposedly they kept a net there and just had to reach in and pull out all the fish they could eat, more time for praying !
    .
the main abbey is in the background here but hard to see, sorry 'bout dat.
    .
    .
    .
cong is also famed for the filum called 'da quiet man' and there's lots of (not much really) stuff relating to that there filum here.
    .
    .
    .
as you can only imagine, i was gagging for a cup of tae at this stage, all the riding and religion and all, so i sloped in for a bit of a tae break and it was grand, just grand.
    .
    .
    .
i'm lamping into this but all i hear is murican accents, loud and louder................what's the story here ? canna ye nae chat quietly over dere ?
not giving out or nothin' ye'se are grand people and all but christ ye'se can be a bit loud at times, or does ye'se be a bit hard o hearing over dere ? maybe you could let me know please 'cos i'm a bit worried about it.
    .
    .
    .
so, i'm sittin' there shootin' the shit with some of my yankee cousints and the abbey just across the road and me belly full again............tings was lookin' up, yes indeed things was lookin' up !
    .
    .
    .
the monks/friars had one over on this boy, he had to wait a quare while to get his dinner, not like the cute bucks in the long robes !
    .
    .
    .
    .
right so, off and away up the road, the sun was out and the mood was rising............
