I'll see what I can do. It broke after the system upgrade and I haven't had time to figure it out yet. Once I figure it out I will update the first post in this thread. Thanks S1

Don't want to hijack this thread, but just got the notice below. Yikes!

    Dear Valued SPOT Customer,

Thank you for your continued loyalty to SPOT. We hope that SPOT's award winning technology and proven reliability has helped you enjoy your adventures and provided additional peace of mind to your family and friends while you were off the grid.

As we continue to upgrade our network to ensure you the best possible and most reliable service in the industry, this email is to inform you of upcoming changes to the cost of your SPOT Gen3 service plan(s):

    1. A Network Maintenance Fee of $14.99 will be charged to your account.
    2. The Basic Service plan that your SPOT Gen3 device(s) are currently on has been discontinued and will be migrated over to our new enhanced Basic Service plan. As such, your current price will increase to $199.99 at the time of your renewal.
That's a 25% increase. Gotcha by the short and curlies...

Haven't got that mail from them...yet, but that might get me to move to an inreach unit.

Mine just renewed and I saw that $14.99 charge, but not the increase to $199. I was on their $149 plan. Keep in mind they will AUTOMATICALLY charge your credit card for those rates unless you sternly tell them not to.

I recently did some looking around and found that the InReach (Now purchased by Garmin) only shows their new InReach units as having a full GPS with them, not the stand alone products they used to have. MrDualSport posted that he recently purchased their stand-alone units on Amazon. Not sure what their future will be, but I don't want a second GPS, so I just renewed the SPOT - Probably for the last time. Nice to have something like that if you ride alone/remote.

My happy marriage heavily depends on such a device. I looked hard and long at the InReach, but ultimately decided on the (at the time) lower cost of the SPOT. (Like Scott_PDX, I've been on the basic $150 plan). I have to wonder what "enhancements" I'll see on the new plan. :bluduh

IIRC, my renewal is a ways off, but it may be time to shop around again.

I just looked on their web page and it still shows $149 for the basic service. The $14.99 maint charge was there when I got mine in Oct. Scott, the Spot and Inreach have always had GPS but it was the inreach se that had tracking and a like to the phone to work with the Delorme mapping app. But you don't have to use it if you don't want to and just having it for tracking, texting, etc. Kevin, my marriage is the same way. She LOVES getting my tracking info and more importantly the check-in OK's at the end of the day. I'm heading to Baja next week and decided to not get international data or voice on my phone since I can do the check-in with the spot and when I get to places that have WiFi I'll just IM with her on Skype or FaceBook. I do like the idea of the two way texting with the InReach though!!!

When you consider that SPOT is using the Globalstar satellite network and everyone else is using Irridium, its not surprising SPOT subscribers are dropping and prices are rising. I quit my SPOT this year (after several emails) and will be switching to Garmin InReach because of a more global Irridium coverage.

I did pick up a SE on Amazon for $230. Very happy I made the switch.
Being able to send a text in an emergency is invaluable.
Being able to text another inreach unit that someone else in your group has is very useful. Was nice to have in Baja and be able to communicate without cell service if separated.

Spotwalla apparently works with the inreach. I just signed up and it should show up here the next time I use it.

    Updates on Spotwalla;

Spotwalla posted the following on their facebook page in May. If you are no longer getting tracked on the Map this maybe the reason why:

A number of users have recently updated the firmware in their SPOT 3 device and found their tracking locations were no longer flowing to SpotWalla. Other message types (OK, Custom) are not affected.

The fix for this is to log into your SPOT account (https://login.findmespot.com) account and update the shared page you're using to configure your device in SpotWalla.

Ensure all message types (e.g. OK, Custom, Tracking, etc) are checked. Click the appropriate button to update the shared page and you should be good to go.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the quality of Spot vs. InReach, personally I have made the following changes to my Spot/Spotwalla situation.

    1) I have discontinued use of my Spot account. A small increase in charges and too many missed track points from my device finally got me fed-up with it.
    2) I have purchased an ACR PLB device for emergencies, I paid a one time fee on it of about $250 and it's battery will be good for 5 years .
    3) I have installed SW Connect on my IPhone and am using this in conjunction with Spotwalla so that you can still see where 'S1' is on the map. Honestly, my initial testing of this has not been perfect and I have had to reconnect/reset my Spotwalla account, but it is certainly better than nothing and I can send a custom nmessage with it when I want to. However SW Connect will only work when I have it turned on for tracking (doh!) and when I am in range of a Verizon cell phone tower. If I am out of range and I have a major mishap, then I use the PLB.

I hope this helps. Thanks Mark

I upgraded to the new InReach Garmin edition.
The monthly plans and 2 way texting pushed me over in addition to Spots billing practices.
I will be putting it to the test as I head out next week.
I was able to add the Inreach to my Spotwalla and signed it on to the ADV page as Mrf.

great thread. I am looking at both the garmin and this. The garmin is a lot more $ and really doesnt serve for the Tracks and things, but I am thinking it is probably worth the extra $ now. Sway me because I wanted a spot 3 and spot tracker.

I think Spot is a questionable purchase now. Most of the guys I know have dumped them, or never even signed up with them. Unless I'm missing something I'd be concerned about service in the future.
