Stalling -24 times in 30 miles

    Went for a ride today - 30 miles no problem. Two hours later I rode home - my F800GS stalled more than two dozen times on the way home. I'd pull in the clutch and wait 10 seconds or so and restart the engine. WTF?

    More details: Last rode the bike two months ago. Parked it with 3/4 empty fuel tank. Filled up at beginning of today's ride. First 30 miles no problems. On the way home it was stalling when I stopped for a light and also as I was cruising at 40-50; about half each way. At five miles I found a gas station - they didn't have Techron so I put in half a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Didn't help. The further I went the less distance between stalls. When it stalled I would wait a bit before restarting; it would usually start - if not, it would start ten seconds later.

    I have been using Techron or Star-tron and Shell gas on a regular basis for the last two years. This fill-up was Conoco.

    What happened? Bad gas? Water in the tank from being mostly empty? Crud plugging the injectors? ???

    What to do now? Drain the tank and refill with fresh gas and Techron? Replace the injectors? (The bike is out of warranty)

    Make sure the charcoal canister isn't full of water for starters.

    Remove it and invert it. I was amazed how much water came out of mine.
    It's most likely not the cause of your problem, but it pays to start w/ the simple stuff.

    Whenever I hear "ran fine, got gas, started to run like crap" I say water.

    If the engine is missing on the highway as well as idle, seems to back it up. There is no return fuel system so the water accumulates in the injector rail and will get worse until it's burnt or removed.

    I'd drain the fuel with a hose till the level is below the pump assy then pull the pump and look inside the tank. Fast and easy if you've done it before.

    You might also ensure that your tank vent is not clogged. I had an instance where the bike stalled repeatably, when I opened the fuel tank to ensure that there was in fact gas in the tank!!!, I heard a rushing sound of air escaping or entering, was not sure. I have heard that a few times since and am sure that when it happens my vent line is pinched or something as I move it around and problem solved.
    If the vent is clogged, as you burn fuel, you create a vacuum in the tank, and eventually the pump cannot pressurize the fuel system.
    Next time it happens, it is a real easy check, just listen when you open your fuel tank.

    If you hold a slip of paper up to the tank opening and then pop the lid you can watch which way the paper deflects and will know if it's a pressure release or a vacuum. If it's vacuum you'll need to get that fixed ... likely canister and/or check valve ... long thread on that here....

    If you go the HEET approach let me recommend that you buy the RED bottle HEET and not yellow ... the HEET website explains the difference and after reading it I can't figure out why anyone but the uninformed would by the yellow-bottle stuff...

    Had a similar problem with my 2010 F800gs, here in Colorado. Clogged fuel injectors. Replaced under warranty, no issues since. Always used premium fuel from a major chain (usually Conoco). Interestingly, recently had my 12k service done. Fuel additive now recommended and installed by dealer at time of service. BMW Group fuel system cleaner plus. No mention 5k miles ago when the injectors were replaced. Good luck.

    The BMW branded fuel system cleaner bottle looks amazingly like the Techron bottle ... but probably costs more... :lol3

    Are you riding in rain? My canister sucked water up the vent line on my Alaska trip. Pulled the vent line up on top of the transmission and the problem went away. Did a canisterotomy when I got home.

    Just read this thread a night out two ago and now I'm sitting at a gas station waiting for a tow. Same issue, began sputtering while riding. Now it'll start and run for about 10seconds before it dies again. Any updates on what was wrong with yours?

    Heard back from the dealer today. Ended up being a bad fuel pressure regulator. Replacing it under warranty.

    Trykart, yours seems to be a different issue.

    Um, they don't have a fuel pressure regulator. A pressure sensor and controller, sure, but no regulator as such.

    Just for our info, what exactly got replaced?

    Oh weird, that's what the tech said on the voicemail. I'll ask them to clarify. they said they ordered "the part" and it won't be in until Tues. I just re-read the OP and my issue does sound a bit different. It began sputtering and almost stalled at speed. When I turned it off, It would re-start for a few seconds, sputter and die again. The longer I let it sit, the longer it would stay running before it died again.

    Yours sounds more like a heat replated electrical problem. I bet they replace the Fuel Pressure Controller which is under the seat on top of the pump. You're under warranty but ask them nicely if they will cut off the blue plug and wiring and give it to you. If so, go read up on the bypass wiring for next time when you're out of warranty. :1drink

    This has been covered extensively here. In my case it was a blocked fuel filter causing the fuel pump to overheat/fail. The symptoms were exactly as the o/p describes.
    The fuel filter is not available as a separate item, only as part of the pump assembly.
    I replaced the pump with a generic one off a well known internet auction site & the filter with a suitable external car one. Haven't had a problem since.
    let us know the outcome of the "regulator" replacement.
    (They don't have one)

    OP here. First, I want to say thanks for all the ideas.
    Second, I had to go on a business trip right after posting and haven't had a chance to check the various parts.
    After talking with the service manager I decided that the most likely cause was fouled injectors. I had put fuel injector cleaner in the gas when I had the problem but it didn't help on the way home. So last Thursday I put a dose of BMW fuel treatment in the tank and went for a ride of 25 miles -- no problems, not even a stumble. Today I rode 8 miles and then 4 hours later rode 20 miles -- again no problems.
    So -- prime suspect -- crud from the alcohol in the gas fouling the injectors. I have my fingers crossed that this gas treatment will keep it running good.:norton
