South Carolina/29 March, 2015. Well, another rider heads out and this time it’s my turn. I’m retiring tomorrow and while I still have both family and other obligations, I'm venturing out to see more of the world than I have so far. I’ll join up with friends and family from time to time and come home every now and then, but for the most part I plan to be on the road for many months and perhaps even a couple of years to come---seeing the planet while the seeing is good.

I’m much older than the majority of Adventure Riders, so this report will be a bit calmer and less about burning the candle at both ends than some others and more about places to go, people to meet, and things to see. My 690 is already on its way to Dublin and I’ll follow on the 27th of April. Early routing will focus on the Northwest 200 (hopefully to watch Guy Martin rip down Millbank or over Black Hill---whoop!), then over to Wollaston for a Rally Raid update for the 690. After that it’s west again to the Isle of Man TT (already ticketed on the ferry from Liverpool), and then maybe on down to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After that, it’s up through Wales and Scotland, maybe the Orkneys and then on through Scandinavia, down through the Baltics, and on into southern Europe and the Alps for the summer. I’ll return home for Christmas and then be back for a new ride to new places in 2016. Too bad about the current international political situation, there are many places I truly want to go that just aren’t reasonable right now. Maybe later but for the moment, the plan is to just see what I can see…

Nothing to report yet, but hopefully my bike and I will arrive at around the same time and I’ll be away clean. So, for now this post is just a place-holder for my real Ride Report beginning in early May. Friends from England are coming to Dublin to help get me squared away and off and running. So, follow along if you like, I’m sure I’ll enjoy the company; in return, I’ll try to make the trip and my reports reasonably interesting.

    Keep the BLUE side up!
    Following.

Did you put your 690 in a box on a boat in SAV?

Sorry we didn't get to hook up before you depart. I picked up my 690 3 weeks ago. Immediately sent seat out to CA. Awaiting its return.

    Safe journey!

In! Will there be a get together at the airfield before you depart? If there isn't one planned I'd like to head that way sometime soon perhaps even during the week for some good ole "Q" and a Dr. pepper:freaky

Roadrider: Shipped by truck to New Jersey. Hopefully it's aboard ship by now, bound for Ireland.

Kalonji: After tomorrow, I'm up for some flying and some riding. Let me know if you get a free weekend. The Rocket is purring like a kitten.

I'll try to be ready next Saturday or Sunday. I will let you know this week. I'll put the word out to see if any others want to join.

For my Gulfstream friends who check in and haven't seen the kind of bikes people are routinely riding long distances these days, here's a couple of shots of mine (and the Rocket I'm leaving behind :>(

    It's a 2012 KTM 690, a good choice for this trip...

Cool trip plans and all but...

    Don't forget how to fly!

Your bird looks somewhat unforgiving of rustiness. :freaky

    Safe travels.

8GV: Help me out here...RBW? And yes, sweet airplane and you're right---just like any good motorcycle too, it likes to go places!

Roadrider: Well...yes... and thanks for the implied "offer"! I have an A&P friend who's going to run it up for me a couple or three times a month. Insurance on that beast is really high; I can pay for a good month of riding in Europe by converting it to non-moving and dropping liability on it while I'm gone. My buddy is a fellow retired Marine, so his help is a stone cold lock. I'm more worried about where my 690 is right now. Haven't heard from the shipping company for awhile! Here it is getting on the transporter:

    BTW Lee,

You confused all the young-ins with the title when you referenced an AM radio dial!!

8gv: Okay, now I'm embarrassed, I certainly should have guessed that! I don't go to Walterboro all that much, I'm based in Ridgeland (3J1). Our 100LL prices are way high, so we're not generally thought of as a fuel stop around here. It's a jewel of a little county airport, but we usually go to Allendale (KAQX) or Plantation (KJYL) to top off.

    What are you flying?

I'll throw another bike pic in to make this conversation legal...here's the cockpit of my 690. Not quite as extensive as the Rocket but I have added a little instrumentation to warn of known 690 issues (largely a thing of the past these days, but hey...):

Juno: Ha! Are you saying I should have bought a BMW for this trip just to keep things in the FM frequency range?!! I grew up on AM!

I fly the plane that you wear...Diamond DA-20C1:

You aren't kdding about the fuel prices at 3J1. Airnav has them charging $5.83.

    Airnav says RBW is $4.27.

I think I have been to 3J1 or it could have been a back up fuel stop for me. I can't remember.

8gv: That is a beautiful ship, I'm sure you really enjoy flying it. I've never been up in a Diamond, but we've had a couple of them here in Ridgeland; sweet. If you're down here before the end of the month, drop in if you get a chance!
