I could've sold them a hoary old truism for a lot less than the price of that study.

Statistics be damned. Enjoy the ride while it lasts. Nobody gets out alive.

"Researchers delved into a US national database for figures of motorcycle collisions between 2001 and 2008..."

So by definition, their data is already at least 4 years - and potentially up to 12 years old; plus, it's for America, where the traffic rules, vehicles, terrain, climate, traffic density, helmet laws, licencing requirements - and probably body-mass index - are all entirely different to Australia.

I'm sorry, I don't see more than a 2.35% relevance here - particularly since it's a known fact that 80% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I am shocked that The Australian saw fit to inconvenience so many million electrons to publish this puff (a technical, journalistic term for bullshit).
Moreover, I'm saddened that no sub or editor took a solitary look at this piece from a wire service (AFP) and asked a staff journo to investigate exactly the points made above - and either confirm their relevance, or repudiate them (another technical term, for crying "Bullshit!").
Don't stress mate - unless you're planning on riding in America: they're all mad and drive on the wrong side of the bloody road!

So is the above a classic example of what you are referring to?

.... or is it a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I think it'd be pretty much the same here. The higher rate of head/neck injuries might be due to more old blokes not wearing helmets.

"Bikers aged 60-plus were more than twice as likely to have a head or neck injury compared with 20-to-39-year-olds"

" three times likelier to have an injury to the upper chest .... [and] likelier to sustain internal organ damage."

As they point out old blokes have "... a decline in bone strength, changes in body fat distribution, decreasing elasticity in the chest wall and the greater likelihood of underlying illness that often complicates recovery."

There's hope for us old blokes though. I got talking to this bloke at the Island Classic. He's only been racing the Honda for two years, and he's 67 now:clap
